Did you know that horses don’t feel the cold in the same way that we do? Here are some helpful Winter tips from the The British Horse Society. ❄️

It can be really tempting to rug our horses to keep them cosy, especially when we feel cold ourselves, but as horses will naturally grow a thick winter coat, it is important to assess whether rugging is truly necessary.

With temperatures dropping it’s likely you’re adding on an extra layer of clothing. However, a healthy horse doesn’t tend to feel the cold until the temperature falls below 5°C, above this they are able to keep themselves warm without using too much energy. Therefore, it’s important we don’t rug our horses based on how cold we are feeling.

At this time of year, the temperature can vary at different parts of the day, so although it may feel cooler at 7am a few hours later it can be a lot warmer!

Harry and George have settled in with their new friends so quickly!

No structural damage but a horrendous morning to work in … 2 people managed to get into work plus a friend who came over so very much appreciated all horses mucked out , clean beds and in the dry and if anybody who thinks keeping a horse in a stable during winter is cruel I would like to see you keep horses outside in these conditions!! We have a power cut for 24 hrs no heat or hot water and no WiFi .. have driven 3 miles to check messages and let family know we are ok !

Newbie George had a groom this afternoon and think we found his soft spots !

Welcome ! Two new boys arrived today first was Harry from Essex a stunning handsome Friesian followed by George a thoroughbred from Bedfordshire, both said hello and will be stabled next to each other before they eventually join Timmys group once settled inn!

The home is a ninety acre farm situated in a peaceful green valley, with lush, rolling green fields surrounded by mature trees and hedges. It is set in the heart of a National Park, in the midst of beautiful, spectacular countryside.

Our purpose is to create a haven where owners have the opportunity to retire their horse with maximum care and attention.

The Staff are highly qualified, motivated and committed to caring for our elderly equines.

Horses come from far and wide because of the reputation and trust we have built up over the years, at Happy Horse they return to their natural lifestyle and herding instinct to enjoy their twilight years.
