💫💔 Yesterday we lost our amazing Agatha. Agatha was a pekin chicken, a bantam breed and was 11 years old. This really highlights how short some chickens lives are.
Did you know the average meat chicken is slaughtered between 6-12 weeks old? Agatha came to us at 12 weeks old and was just starting her life then.
The average commercial egg laying chicken also has such a short life compared. Most egg laying chickens drop in productivity after 12 months of age and are usually slaughtered then to make room for new younger chickens. This really highlights how some people view these amazing birds. They are full of joy and love, make great back yard pets and companions and are so intelligent, yet most of these guys don’t even get a year of life…. Makes you think. 💔💫
