We all know how important it is to keep our dogs and cats cool on warm days, but may not realise that it's just as important for small animals too ⛅

Small pets like rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, and rats should be kept cool and hydrated during warm weather to prevent them from developing life-threatening heatstroke.

Signs of heatstroke in small pets:
- Drooling.
- Quick breaths.
- Struggling to breathe.
- Acting very sleepy or lethargic.
- Collapsing.
- Seizures.

It's also a good idea to keep on top of cleaning their enclosures to prevent flystrike or a build up of wet bedding and mouldy food 🐰🐰

[Visual description: An infographic titled: "Keeping small pets cool." It features tips such as: Keeping pets in the shade, offering safe watery fruits and vegetables (in moderation), swapping out plastic houses for something cooler like cardboard boxes, freezing a water bottle and wrapping it in a towel before placing it next to your pets' enclosure, placing a fan in their room but not pointed directly at them (making sure they can't nibble any wires), grooming long-haired or fluffy pets, refreshing their water every day, and putting a cool tile or empty ceramic bowl/tea cup in their enclosure for them to sit on/in.]

Today has been brutal.

The calls, the emails, the desperate need for help ,unrelenting. This extreme heat is pushing both people and animals to the edge, and we are feeling it on every front.

I was able to reunite a dog with their owner today — after the Owner had suffered a mental health crisis and had been hospitalised. Seeing them walking in this blistering heat, I couldn’t let it happen. We gave them a lift in our air-conditioned vehicle to get them safely back to the station. A small act — but one that meant everything.

We’ve got clients admitted to hospital.
Dogs at the Sanctuary are getting regular welfare checks.
It’s now 35.5°C — this isn’t just uncomfortable. This is life-threatening.

Tomorrow morning, I’ll be heading into Central London before sunrise with every single donation from our Wish List — bottled water, cooling mats, sun wipes, electrolytes, and more.
We’ve been receiving emails from multiple homeless services in Central London, giving us the exact locations where their clients with dogs are bedding down — so we can go directly to them.
This is what real teamwork looks like.
It’s not about egos.
It’s not about what I’ve done or you’ve done or they’ve done.
It’s about one thing: pulling together to help those in need.
💔 The truth? This heatwave is exposing the reality — people and their dogs, suffering quietly in the shadows, often forgotten.
So please:
💧 Carry extra water. Hand it out.
🐾 Gently remind neighbours: now is not the time for dog walks in the heat.
🧍‍♀️ If you see someone sleeping rough, check they’re okay.
We are under pressure. Exhausted. And it’s only getting harder.
But we are not stopping.
Thank you to everyone who helps us keep going.
Every single share, donation, bottle of water , it all matters. 🧡
