Just south of Ballinger, Texas, in the wide-open fields of Runnels County, lies a unique and heartwarming piece of Lone Star history. About 4.7 miles down US Highway 83, you’ll find the resting place of Joe, the beloved horse of Dr. W.W. Fowler (1858-1929).
Joe wasn’t just any horse—he was Dr. Fowler’s loyal companion for 31 years. After long days of tending to patients, Dr. Fowler would climb into his buckboard, utter the words “Home, Joe,” and drift off to sleep, trusting Joe to guide him back safely.

In true Texas fashion, Joe’s loyalty earned him a special place in history. And every December, someone—whose identity remains a mystery—honors that legacy by placing a wreath on the fence surrounding Joe’s grave. It’s a simple but touching tribute to a bond as enduring as the Texas sky.
