💩 Getting the best sample 💩

Getting the perfect poo sample for worm and fluke testing…

When gathering faeces look out for these three things to ensure an accurate and fresh sample:

🪱Flies – if there’s loads of flies around a certain piece of poo it will normally mean it is fairly fresh.
🪱Shine- New and recent faeces tend to stay shiny for a short while before going hard and dull.
🪱Warmth - Warm faeces would indicate that the poo in fresh within the last hour.

And ideally catch it as you see it land! Fresh faeces is essential, using old faeces will falsely lower your count as the eggs get blown off or migrate out of the muck or birds could have got to the faeces first.

When bringing in sample, we ask that you bring at least a tea spoon full of poo in. We can pool samples from multiple animals to show the worm/fluke burden in your herd or flock or run individual samples too.

One of our vets will report the results and talk you through treatment options within a day, all included in the cost. Targeted worm and fluke treatment is important in preventing wormer resistance, improves growth rates and saves you money on unnecessary or incorrect treatment.

🐑Ram fertility testing.🐑

Why do we fertility test?

We fertility test to Improve the efficiency of the flock to ensure for a good lambing season.
Identifying issues with rams early will allow more time to find solutions to any issue, which may include removing rams not fit for breeding.

When having problems with low scanning fertility testing can be a Key indicator to rule out Tups as an issue. Healthy and fertile rams lead to more viable lambs in a shorter period of time.

What does it involve?

Clinical Examination of:
⭐️Teeth
⭐️Body condition and conformation.
⭐️Eyes
⭐️Heart and lungs
⭐️Feet

External Examination of
⭐️Testicles (size and shape)
⭐️Pen*s

Semen examination
⭐️Collect semen sample using electro-ejaculation.
⭐️Examine under microscope for gross motility, progressive motility, Morphology and defects.

Ideally we need to test tups 2-3 months before tupping time to resolve issues and retest animals that have failed first time round.

Call us today to get your rams booked in.

🐓Farm is more than just cows, sheep, and pigs.🐓

Today, we welcomed Ivy for a minor eye procedure performed by Chris with assistance from Ella. Ivy has been sent home with treatment and painkillers to ensure her comfort, and we hope she will be pleased to reunite with her flock mates.

Mycoplasmosis, commonly referred to as “bulgy eye,” is a bacterial infection that can impact chickens and other avian species.

Some symptoms to watch for include:
⭐️Discharge from the eyes and nose,
⭐️Coughing,
⭐️Swollen eyes,
⭐️Sneezing,
⭐️Difficulty breathing.

The swelling in the sinuses beneath the eyes gives rise to the term “bulging eye.” Birds infected with Mycoplasmosis can transmit the disease to others, especially when under stress. In more severe instances, birds may require minor surgeries to remove the accumulated discharge around the eye. If performed correctly and given adequate healing time, the bird should regain vision in that eye.

Prevention strategies include:
⭐️Quarantining new birds for at least two to three weeks before introducing them to the flock.
⭐️Providing high-quality feed
⭐️Minimal dust and ammonia levels
⭐️Maintaining low stress levels.

🐮 TB Survey 🐮

DEFRA are looking to hear back from all cattle farmers that are dealing with TB on their Farms.

The aim is to get your experience and views around bovine TB compensation.

To understand the types of actions that farmers are taking in attempts to reduce the risk of herd breakdowns.
(In hopes to improve the management of TB in England.)

This survey is completely voluntary, also a great opportunity to help the Government understand the views of cattle farmers facing the challenges of TB. How they can help support you better in the future.
Please click the link below if you wish to take part in the TB survey.

Did you know you can get your ADL visit PLUS testing for FREE with the APHA pathway funding?🐄🐑🐖

ADL (approved drugs list) is a visit carried out by our vets to see your animals if we haven’t been out on your farm in the past year. This allows us to prescribe drugs and includes a discussion about management, antibiotic usage, wormers and vaccines and opportunity for you to ask us questions about the health of your stock.

The pathway is funding open to cattle, sheep, pig clients and will pay for the vet visit including testing and a vet report afterwards. To receive the funding, sign up to the scheme PRIOR to the visit, if you need help registering call us and we will be happy to help guide you through. You can apply for the funding anytime. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/farmers-how-to-apply-for-funding-to-improve-animal-health-and-welfare

Here is some very friendly sheep from an ADL visit where we carried out a worm egg count and blood sampling for minerals to check the disease status of the flock ahead of tupping. 🐑

🐄 Pregnancy Diagnosis - PD🐄

Susan out on farm this week getting through a lot of PD visits. Pregnancy diagnosis can help you and your herd in many different ways.

What are some of the benefits?

⭐️Improved Management
- Cows that are empty can either go to be re-bred or culled.
- Early Pregnancy diagnosis can identify twins, which will help you feed the correct nutrition to your herd ensuring a successful calving.
- Identifying poor fertility means we can investigate problems quicker.
⭐️ Synchronised Programs
If poor fertility tends to be a problem on your farm we can start working toward a plan to fix this, such as using synchronising programmes.
- Getting your herd into a synchronised program will help with heat detection and knowing when to serve the cows.
- Having the cows synchronised helps with observation and monitoring during calving.
- Earlier calving will lead cows to get into calf quicker next year (more time to recover from previous calving).

Speaking with a vet and having regular checks in your herd can help in many different ways. Calving is fast approaching, if you feel like you need a vet to check your herd or you have any questions don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Bluetongue update: 133 BTV-3 cases have been confirmed within the Restricted Zone - which covers 20 counties in England, and a further 11 cases, including 2 cases in Wales were linked to moves from high-risk areas. While temperatures are lower, midges are still active and the risk of onward disease spread remains. Livestock keepers must stay vigilant, report any suspicion of bluetongue immediately, follow the restrictions on animal & germinal product movements & only move animals when it’s absolutely necessary. Please check the bluetongue map, GOV.UK: https://www.gov.uk/bluetongue & GOV.WALES: https://www.gov.wales/bluetongue-virus-btv for the latest info on BTV-3 restrictions, licences & vaccination.
