Antibiotic Amnesty 2023
Proud to support the safeguarding of antibiotics 💚 #AntibioticAmnesty
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a world-wide health threat, as bacteria are becoming resistant to many antibiotics we use.
A third of people hold onto unused antibiotics for potential future re-use and pet owners may similarly store them for their pets, but re-using antibiotics poses a high risk of AMR emerging and spreading.
Throughout November, overlapping with World Antibiotic Awareness Week, we are holding an antibiotic amnesty and are asking clients to return any unused veterinary antibiotic medications to us for safe disposal.
We can also dispense of pet medicines other than antibiotics; please ask a member of the team for help.

Keeping small pets cool
A lot of attention is given to looking after dogs in the heatwave but don't forget about rabbits and guinea pigs too!
🐰 Move their hutch and run into the shade, under a parasol or into a cool room
🐰 If you use towels or sheets to create shade, make sure there's still airflow underneath
🐰 Try freezing a large bottle of water and wrapping it in a towel before placing in the hutch/run - some animals will like lying next to the bottle to keep cool
🐰 Ensure that fresh, cool water is available at all times and check the spout on drinking bottles to make sure it's not blocked. Rabbits will appreciate having a bowl of water as well as a bottle
🐰 Rabbits are at higher risk of flystrike during the summer months - make sure your rabbit's bottom and bedding is clean at all times

StreetVet - Shadow's new squeaky!
This lovely girl is Shadow. Shadow is one of the first patients that @StreetVet Birmingham registered last year. She has been coming back to see the team regularly for help with an ongoing skin issue that they are giving treatment for. At her latest check-up with StreetVet there was an amazing improvement!
Here she is rejoicing with a new super squeaky toy that supporters have purchased from their Amazon wishlists. (Make sure you have the sound on!)
If you would like to support dogs just like Shadow, please visit www.streetvet.co.uk to see the many ways that you can help, including purchasing much needed items from their city specific wishlists.

More about StreetVet
Ahead of our fundraising efforts this week, more about our nominated charity of the year - StreetVet.
StreetVet are volunteer-led, registered veterinary practices who operate on the streets of 10 cities across the UK. London, Brighton, Bristol, Birmingham, Plymouth, Southampton, Cheltenham, Cornwall, Cambridge, Swindon & Glasgow. They partner with organisations and veterinary practices to provide free and, most importantly, accessible veterinary care and support to the pets of the homeless.
As you may already know, sadly, homelessness is a growing problem in the UK and an increasing number of homeless people have dogs. The bond between many homeless people and their dogs is profound. The health and wellbeing of their canine and sometimes feline companions is often a top priority for their owners.
Being homeless makes it difficult to access the fundamental vet care required to ensure the health and vitality that these pets deserve. This is when the team of StreetVets and StreetNurses step in to provide the help and support.
Please take a look at this video which explains all about the service that they provide.
If you would like to donate to StreetVet or see how you can support their work, please visit their website at www.streetvet.co.uk, consider buying an item from their Amazon wishlists (https://amzn.to/2JfX6VP) and keep an eye out on Facebook for our staff’s fundraising events!
