No balls today as itโs too hot but that didnโt stop Paddy & Xena from playing a different game! ๐๐ a few times I thought I was gonna have my legs taken from beneath me ๐๐
Bonnie had her first behaviour session today, lots of people, cars & dogs around which she normally reacts to but not today! She settled into her walk walking past people and cars without reacting and met 3 dogs 3 times without barking had a sniff and walked off on her own accord. ๐ฅณ๐ซถ๐ฝ she smashed it today ๐ฅน๐
The change in Bert around dogs is insane!! Heโs only been out of kennels for 4 weeks and his progress is wild ๐ hereโs to the next 4!!
๐ฅน๐ฅน the best boys (all my boys are the best boys)
I love Barneys dedication to the game, rain or shine, limp or no limp he will always chase that ball! When we have โno ball daysโ because of his legs all he does is bark at me like โexcuse me? Whereโs my ball?โ ๐๐๐
Bert made a new friend today in little Lottie! ๐ฅฐ
He was very unsure at the start, lots of pulling but no fixating which is a positive! By the end of their walk they were walking side by side happily ๐
Whoโs turn next week?๐๐ #behaviourwork
Izzyโs socialising session wasnโt very social today, where was everybody at? ๐ though, the over friendly cat and two dogs we did meet / pass she walked straight on past unfazed! Sheโs a good girl ๐๐ฅฐ
Told you didnโt I! ๐๐ Pad initiates play with Frank, Barney thinks itโs too much and tells them off! ๐ It always stops as quick as starts to, funny pups ๐ฅฐ๐คฉ๐
These 3 love the wooded area here, but Paddy will ALWAYS start trying to play with Frankie - probably because itโs so enclosed, who knows! And it always ends up with Barney barking at him, presumably telling him off ๐๐
This was just after Pads trying to iniate play, all walking in perfect harmony ๐คฉ๐ซถ๐ฝ
Happy Friday all, enjoy your weekend ๐
Akela was one of the first dogs I took on when opening Ruff & Tumble and when I say the change in her is massive I really mean it.๐ฅน
Sheโs a Romanian rescue and was/is very nervous. Her owner warned me that she wasnโt a dog who would want a stroke or a cuddle, there was a certain way to put her harness on because she would cower to the floor or run away putting it on over her head, she wouldnโt like group walks etc.
All these things were true, if I touched her she would just freeze, she would cower when I tried to put her harness on, she didnโt like being around other dogs, sheโd also plant herself into the ground or turn round and pull to go home when she had enough. I had never even seen her sit until very recently when she felt comfortable to sit on the field next to me and watch the other dogs.
But now, Akela loves nothing more than an ear scratch and a stroke after a walk, I put her harness on over her head and she also loves group walks, especially with Nala & Ollie ๐ฅฐ
Over the past couple of years I have never forced her to do anything she wasnโt comfortable with, Iโve given her the space and time she needed and she rewards me weekly with this. This would have never of happened 2 years ago!
Youโre a special girl Akela ๐
Abit more of an insight to Berty boys first session with another dog (Xena๐ฅฐ). You can really see his confidence grow in this video! ๐ฅฒ
10 minutes into Bertโs session today I was thinking that maybe he was more reactive to dogs than I initially thought. Had I made the right decision in letting him meet Xena? I knew I had to give him time, for a dog who had so much pent up frustration around other dogs 10 minutes was not enough time to let him decompress in any way, shape or form.
We walked round the field countless times, passing each other briefly. We would then stop and chat at a safe distance and give Bert the opportunity to make the right choices, and my oh my didnโt he start to make the right choices!! You could visibly see Bert begin to relax, Xena wasnโt being carted off when he barked so he stopped barking and was able to meet Xena properly.
By the end they were walking closely, sniffing bums, licking each others faces, sharing water and establishing their boundaries. On our next session, hopefully it wonโt take Bert as long to settle so we can get them on long lines and engaging ๐ค๐ฝ
Such a brave boy๐
Thank you to Xenaโs mama for trusting me with her precious girl & thank you to might right hand โmanโ (soph๐) for looking after X so I could work with Bert๐๐ป๐
Oh Bert, a boy who had my heart before I met him๐
Bert was rescued nearly 2 weeks ago and came with reactivity to just about everything! Noises, people, dogs, cats, anything that moved. He was on the run for days dodging people and traffic before he passed out with exhaustion and was able to be caught. His owners have been proactive and have started training straight away, taking everything at his pace. Introducing people safely and in a controlled way and being walked multiple times a day has helped massively as when I met Bert for the first time he couldnโt walk past someone without reacting. Today, we went to the park where he didnโt react to kids, people or cyclists. Because of how busy their area is, heโs quickly been able to filter these things out as safe and not threatening. Maybe he was so scared of people because so many people tried to catch / grab / chase him? We will never knowโฆ
He did react to the dogs he seen by barking and lunging but by the end of the walk he would walk past with a whine and glance back, a 360 from the start! He has done so well today, better times are coming boy ๐๐ฝ
He finally gets to meet a fellow bully on Sunday to gain some positive experiences in a safe environment. I think Xena could be just the pooch to give Berty boy some confidence. Fingers crossed๐ค๐ฝ๐
Nala & Ollie met 3 puppies on the field today which was like a dream for Ollie. He just sat watching taking it all in whilst Nala entertained!๐Finishing with a wonder around the field ๐
A few weeks ago I asked Reggieโs mum what was something sheโd like to achieve with him and it was being able to take him to coffee shop. Today we made that happen ๐ฅณ๐คฉ๐
Infact, he had a morning full of things his owners couldnโt previously do with him.
- He walked past and greeted other dogs without going into a frenzy
- He walked down roads with passing cars without lunging into the road and barking so much that he got taken home
- He walked through two busy car parks without a care in the world
- He had a mooch around pets at home
- He walked (ran) into the vets when previously he had to go through the back so he didnโt see other dogs
- He was so calm that he was able to have his injections which were overdue because of his behaviour when going to the vets
- He then went into a coffee shop, greeted some dogs beautifully and we sat and had a coffee and a natter..
How amazing is that?!
7 things he has done which his owners told me were impossible at the start but they think anything is possible now ๐๐ช๐ฝ
Muzzle training ๐ซถ
Frankie isnโt a dog who needs a muzzle in any environment other than the vets, she had a bad experience before I got her so has a very negative association with them. She can sit in the vets, sit in the consultation room but getting on the table or having an examination is a big no no!! ๐
๐ฝโโ๏ธ๐
๐ฝโโ๏ธ
Sheโs not been well and has to go back to the vets next week for an intimate examination ๐, she will have to be muzzled but I donโt want it to be such a traumatic experience for her.
I wanted a muzzle movement muzzle for her, theyโre incrediable and the pant room is amazing but it wouldnโt come in time so we are making do with what we got until we can get one. This muzzle isnโt the best fit for Frankie but it will keep everyone safe which is my main priority.
You can see that I donโt force it onto her face, I pop a treat through the hole and I wait for her to put her nose in to get it. Iโve switched up treats all week to keep it interesting for her, her favourite is the squirty cheese which Iโll take with me to the vets ๐ I do this with her multiple times a day and now Iโve started to do it in different rooms, outside, in the car etc. Our next step is to start building the length of time she wears it ๐ค๐ฝ
From a pooch who physically shook, cried and ran away at the sight of a muzzle 2 years ago to a pooch who will quite happily pop her face in. You can see in some of the videos sheโs not particularly thrilled with it on but sheโs not trying to take it off, sheโs accepting it which is a lot more than previously!
My clever girl ๐
Massive thank you to the pooches โAuntie Sophโ for sourcing us a dog ramp strong enough to take a 60kg dog๐ช๐ฝ
Ollie is very appreciative ๐
Iโm sure lots of dogs will need this at some point, older dogs, poorly dogs, just operated on dogs, lazy dogs, pups the list is endless so we are all greatful! ๐ฅฐ๐
I have no words for this little man, exceeding my expectations on every visit. ๐ฑ๐ The difference in him is insane! ๐คฉ๐
Some clips of todays walk ๐
Reggieโs first meet with two dogs! It wasnโt possible to walk on lead with another dog a few weeks ago and now weโre in a public field playing with two dogs heโs never met before ๐ฑ
He met two of my trusties, Kaizah & Barney. Reg wasnโt fussed on seeing me, he wanted to get to the behind of these two! ๐
Sooo many people stop there dogs sniffing others bums and hereโs why you shouldnโt!โฆ
Firstly, itโs their way of greeting each other. We shake hands, they sniff each others bum! ๐ Inside their bum is where their anal glands sit (if you know, you know๐คข) and they produce a horrible smelling substance into the rectum through a tiny opening, when another dog is given the opportunity to sniff they are able to obtain vital information on them, such as; age, health, if theyโve met, what they are like etc apart from this itโs a huge stress reliever ๐
So let them sniff! ๐๐
After lots of sniffing, lots of running, a little chasing we settled into a lovely walk full of positive associations for our Reggie boy ๐
Thank you to Barneys & Kaizahs pawrents for trusting me as always ###
RADs Doggie Delights coming through with the best tips and tricks! ๐๐
One of Frankieโs favourite treats is a filled hoof but I donโt get them often because I donโt really like what is in them. ๐
Rads gave me an empty hoof with some chicken pate and I used half to fill the hoof and squished it all down and popped it in the freezer. This will be a huge hit on a warm day and will last her longer than usual #winwin!!! They also said to take away after a while and refill with something different on another day. Why have I never thought of this myself? ๐
