The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy We are the UK’s premier cat registration body. We offer information, advice and expertise to help choose, care for, or breed the right cat for you or to show!

The Governing Council of the Cat Fancy registers pedigree cats and kittens; grants prefixes to breeders; licenses cat shows across the UK and hosts the annual GCCF Supreme Cat Show held at the NEC, Birmingham each November. There is also a very important welfare element that is administered through the many affiliated cat clubs, ensuring cats are cared for and bred responsibly.

Feline expert Professor Danielle Gunn-Moore and her team at the University of Edinburgh are investigating the impact of environmental enrichment on the wellbeing of indoor cats.

Those who participate in the study will be assigned one of four different enrichment methods, to try over 14 days.

The four methods the study will compare are:

🐾 Daily playing using a wand toy
🐾 15 minutes of Cat TV per day
🐾 Installation of a Feliway Diffuser
🐾 Encouraging food foraging

Part one of the research study closes on Friday 14 March 2025.

Getting prepared for your next cat show? 🐱🐾

Your cat must be fit and well to go to a show. No fleas, no ear mites, no runny eyes, no bare or scabby patches of skin, no snuffles and sneezes and all vaccinations up to date. If in doubt see your Vet.

Do remember to clean ears and eyes and trim the sharp tips of the claws with proper clippers. Do not cut anything but the tip or you will damage the skin and make your cat bleed.

Perfecting the art of the litter tray, one paw at a time 🐾✨

Getting your cat or kitten to use a litter tray can take a little patience - and it's important to have the right set up!

Here are some tips to help you along the litter training journey:

💩 Never punish your cat for going to the toilet in the ‘wrong’ place as this will make the problem worse.
💩 Clean your cat's litter tray regularly - cats are very picky and are less likely to use it if it's dirty!
💩 Keep the litter tray somewhere quiet and private - away from food, water and sleeping areas.
💩 Make sure there is enough room for your cat to turn around in the litter tray, and if they are an elderly cat, they may also need lower sides to get in and out.
💩 Provide one litter tray per cat, plus one extra.
💩 Spread your trays around, avoid placing litter trays in a row - cat's see this as one big litter tray!

SURVEY CLOSING SOON! 📣

GCCF is a member of the World Cat Congress, an international organisation dedicated to fostering co-operation between organisations of the Cat Fancy worldwide.

Each year there is a World Cat Congress Annual Meeting, hosted by one of the WCC members. GCCF will be hosting the 2026 event in Liverpool 🥳

The event takes place over several days to include the WCC meeting, a seminar, Gala Dinner and a Cat Show.

The seminar is a great opportunity for delegates to learn from the presentations of the expert speakers, on the latest information on a variety of feline related topics, as well as an opportunity to interact with the speakers in person.

We have compiled a list of potential seminar topics and whilst we won’t be able to cover all of them, it may be possible to combine some where there is lot of interest.

🕊️ SHIRLEY BULLOCK 🕊️

It is with sadness that I have to advise you of the death of our President, Mrs Shirley Bullock. Shirley had been our President since 2017, and although she had been unwell for some time, and had chosen to become an Emeritus Judge, she had been a well respected Judge for many years of all breeds in Sections 2, 4, 5 and 6, plus Selkirk Rex in Section 3.

Shirley served with distinction on GCCF’s Executive Committee, BACs and club committees as well as Show Manager for the Abyssinian Cat Club. Her wise and kindly presence will be missed by all those who knew her, and we send our condolences to Shirley’s family and many friends.
