Foundation Scentwork- learning about
Scent Identification, Search skills and Indication.

We use kong as the odour in our Foundation class.
Teaching our dogs about its smell, building confidence around searching for the odour and and looking at how the dog prefers to communicate the find.

Some dogs tell us they have found the odour with their nose, others with a stand stare, some will prefer to sit and others might vary their pattern dependant on the height/ location of the odour.

As handlers we learn so much about our dogs communication skills in search , investigation and the odour find. We also learn about the timing of when to help, when to encourage and when to step back.

Rewards and fun are always built into their learning adventure. Handlers are keen to know what is it that the dog finds rewarding after they have completed a search - is it a toy or a couple of toys , a cuddle and or verbal praise or the Cheddar cheese nibbles or liver pieces.Really important to work out with your dog to make the Scent adventure their best experience.

We warm our dogs up into the activity of scentwork both mentally and physically. Did you know it takes 3 minutes for the nose to get warmed up in our dogs?

It is important our dogs always have access to water in Scentwork, to keep the mucous in the nose and moist ready to sniff and support the brain interpret information about the odour. A dry nose and mouth make it really difficult to sniff and process the scent information.
Sniffing is also thirsty work.

Liz Truman and I are back from 3 days at K9-Commando.com Conservation Scentwork conference.
Met amazing generous people sharing their knowledge from Dog world and Ecology world.
It was great to catch up with Natasha Underwood NHU Ecology and Detection Dogs.Natasha had the equivalent of a Paul Hollywood handshake from Paul Bunker ( 1 of the course mentors) Woohoo!!
Sylvie particularly enjoyed learning field search skills which overlaps with her field work learning from her other hobby.

Liz and I are looking forward to sharing our new learning with the Scentwork and Detection Teams.

So love these wonderful learning situations which are set up to share knowledge, provide discussion without Egos banging on the door, and networking support.Another Woohoo.

Thankyou to everyone for joining me and sharing their dog time with me this year.

2024 has been a steady year, loads of learning, a great time for appreciating the opportunities of everyday happy moments, new doors opening and shifts in the direction of existing life pathways.

I also feel it is important to say a word to the familiies i have shared this year with who have had sadness and loss. I am truly so sorry that you have had to say goodbye to a beloved dog in your life .
They were and always will be so lucky to have had you as their pet parents/ guardians.

Also a massive thankyou to the strong voices in the pet industry who speak out on behalf of our animals and often take the backlash.

Finally I am in awe and offer respect for the work and dedication that my colleagues in the world of rescue and rehabilitation deliver on a day to day level.

See you on the otherside in 2025 and here's to a quiet night on behalf of all those animals terrified of noise.

We went out for a Christmas late lunch before Search night on Tuesday.
Thankyou to Detta Ashford Bob Ashford for all your help, support and cheekiness .
Simon and I had a wonderful surprise with Dee and Bob gifting us some framed beautiful photos of Faney our beloved flatcoat.( RIP November 2023)Followed by a fabulous search night.
