🌟 Smithy's Incredible Journey 🌟
Since February, Smithy has been visiting our brilliant vet Gemma and nurse Jo here at Driffield, and what a journey it’s been! We've faced one of the most challenging wound management cases of our careers, but today, we’re over the moon to say Smithy has been officially signed off with a fully healed wound! 🎉
Her wound measured a staggering 8cm by 6cm and was at least 1cm deep. Due to Smithy being a high anaesthetic risk, our team opted for healing by secondary intention—allowing the wound to heal naturally over time. That meant wound cleans every three days, six months in the cone of shame, and endless cuddles and encouragement from our team and her devoted owner.
Six months might not sound like a long time, but compared to a surgical wound (which typically heals in around 10 days), Smithy's case was a whole different ball game. We battled through complications like infection, movement, pressure, bandage slips, and even too much healing at times. And let’s not forget Smithy’s cheeky attempts to dodge her dad when it was time for wound gel!
Despite all the ups and downs, Smithy’s resilience—and her owner’s unwavering dedication—carried us through. She’s not just our Patient of the Month… she’s our Patient of the Century 💖
Well done Smithy, you’re a true superstar! 🌈
