Good afternoon fellow dog lovers!
we thought this post from our local vets would be beneficial for new and old customers.

All dogs that are boarding with us HAVE to be fully vaccinated, this includes kennel cough (KC).
When booking your dog in we will ask you the dates of your dog’s vaccinations and microchip number and this will be put on the system for future reference.
We will also ask you to bring in your dogs vaccine booklet on arrival, if you do not have the booklet your vets can always email your dogs history to us.

Let’s all keep our doggies safe from this horrible infection. 🐶

‼️ copied from Bredy Veterinary centre‼️

We are currently seeing an increase in Canine Infectious Tracheobronchitis 🐶🦠

Canine Infectious Tracheobronchitis is most commonly known as Kennel Cough. This is a respiratory infection that can be caused by a few different bacteria and viruses.

These viruses and bacteria are airborne and highly infectious, and can be spread by being close to infected dogs, or by sharing items such as toys or bowls. Kennel Cough is very contagious, and can be easily picked up wherever an infected dog has been. This means the name ‘Kennel Cough’ can be misleading, it can spread rapidly in situations with lots of dogs like boarding kennels, but any dog in contact with an infected dog can contract the illness.

The main symptom of Kennel Cough is a hacking cough, which may sound like retching, or trying to clear something stuck in the throat. This cough can last for many weeks.

Kennel Cough may resolve on its own if your dog’s immune system is able to fight off the condition, but some dogs need prescription medication to help them recover. If your dog becomes unwell please seek veterinary advice.

You can reduce the chances of your dog contracting Kennel Cough by having your dog vaccinated. This vaccination is given by a sq**rt up the nose, rather than an injection. The vaccine doesn’t always completely prevent your dog picking up Kennel Cough as there are many different causes, but in most cases if your dog does pick up Kennel Cough even when vaccinated, the signs are usually much milder, and recovery time is shorter.

As some of you remember we had a little Jack Russell called Loki that came in last year.
Unfortunately due to his owners ill health Loki had to be re-homed through us.
Fortunately Loki found his forever home with a lovely lady and has celebrated his first “gotcha-day”

What’s hot and what’s not…

With the weather improving (thankfully) it’s important to keep your pooches as safe as possible.
Heatstroke is a killer and unfortunately too many dogs are falling victim to this every year.

Signs of heat stroke are:
Heavy panting or laboured breathing
Vomiting
Lethargy, collapsing and uncoordinated
excessive drooling

What to do:
❗️Move the dog to a shaded and cool area.
❗️ Immediately pour cool (15-16°C ) water over the dog (avoiding his/hers head) AVOID placing soaked towels over your dog as this traps heat in, soaked towels are better placed under the dog as this allows airflow.
❗️allow the dogs to take in small amounts of water do not allow your dog to gulp the water down.
❗️continue this until your dogs breathing has returned to normal.

If your dog continues to struggle or becomes unconscious immediately call for veterinary advice.

To avoid heatstroke dogs should be walked in cooler periods of the day such as early morning or late evening. If you are concerned that it’s still to hot outside, do the palm to pavement test.
Hold the palm of your hand flat to the pavement for 7-10 seconds… if it burns it’s likely to hot for your fury friend. Leaving your dog in a car (even for 5 minutes) or in the garden too long can be lethal.

Just a little appreciation post for our older doggies, who have come to stay with us recently.
Hope, Django, Truman, Casper, Revel and Digger love a plod around the grassy paddocks, we give them enough time to have a good sniff and pootle about before they head back to their kennel for their breakfast/tea. 🐶 🐾

As many of you know, Dorset is a beautiful place to visit… with its rolling hills, peaceful beaches on a warm evening and long winding woodland tracks. So here are some of our favourite places to take our doggies when we aren’t working in the kennels.

Beaches 🏖️

Chesil Beach
Local info: Multiple pay and display car parks close to the beach. Cafe and picnic area.
Dog restrictions: None - dogs welcome all year round.

Charmouth beach
Charmouth is famous, along with Lyme Regis, for its fossils, especially in winter months due to the rough seas. Charmouth is located 2 miles from Lyme Regis and 6 miles from Bridport.
Dogs are welcome off leads on East Beach (on the Bridport side of the River Char) at any time of the year.

Hillforts 🏰

Eggardon
Enjoy a long or short circular walk around this impressive iron-age hill fort and its beautiful views. Around 2,500 years old, Eggardon Hill towers over the surrounding landscape, having originally been used as a burial mound. In the 18th Century, Isaac Gulliver created a small plantation of trees on top of the hill to act as a landmark easily visible from the coast to guide his smuggling ships. The site is incredibly exposed and is often used for flying kites due to the high winds there and some of the roads and paths have incredible views.

Abbotsbury Castle
This hill fort might be slightly eroded, with the ramparts and trenches less obvious than some, but it is definitely worth a visit for the fantastic views to be had. The site is located on the South Dorset Ridgeway path, with fantastic walks in either direction and incredible views of the Jurassic Coast including St Catherine’s Chapel, Chesil Beach and The Isle of Portland.

Woods, tracks and trails 🌲🐾

Puddletown Forest
Powerstock railway line and Powerstock common
Golden cap
Langdon hill

So before you head back home to work or school give one of Dorset’s beautiful beaches or woods an explore. Your dog will love it!

Phew, it’s starting to get warm out there! ☀️

With the warmer weather coming in, why not book your dog in for a groom with Nell at Elwell Grooming Salon .

Don’t want them clipped? Then there are a variety of ways to help your dog keep cool in the summer months. Nell can do de-sheds, trim/tidy up, or even just a bath to get all the loose under coat out.

Grooming not only helps keep long/thick haired dogs comfortable in the heat it helps maintain a heathy coat. It also helps your dog grow in confidence with your groomer, making it a relaxed and happy groom.

Please head to her page for contact details.

Picture below is of Nell’s handsome Pug George. who had his clip just as it was turning warm this year. George has quite a thick summer coat, so appreciates a summer clip to keep him cool on his adventures with his friends. Who knew pugs could be clipped too!
