Can dogs lick from affection ? Absolutely ✅
Can they lick from feeling anxious ? Yes ✅
Not all licking is appeasement licking. Appeasement licking is usually paired with other stress signals or calming signals and I know that may be tricky for some to notice.
This is one of those behaviours that dogs show us that can be very misread.
Affection ❓Greeting ❓Stress ❓

Licking is completely normal for dogs. It can be a healthy and socially acceptable behaviour between other dogs. It is relaxing, soothing and can be displayed for so many reasons.
However appeasement licking can also be shown to other dogs too, even ones they know and live with.

If you are in any doubt over why your dog licks either you or another dog, video the interaction.
Watch that video and look for tell tale signs of stress (some are mentioned in the graphic).

One of the worst feelings in the world is when I have to inform someone that those certain types of "kisses" do not come from a place of affection but can be from a place of fear, mistrust and stress.

I put my big girl pants on today and took Myrtle to her first Scentwork UK Level 1 trial.
It was a big ask for her, as she’s only done scent work in the house and garden before this (because I’ve always focused on Ethel’s sniffing).

Myrtle did me proud and found 6/6 hides, and bagging a 4th place 🏵️

I’m a super proud Bullie Mum ☺️⭐️

For anyone that knows me, will know that Myrtle is really struggling with adolescence and her hormones at the moment.
I started dreading walking her from the house, because all she wanted to do was pull in hope she would sniff or seek out a cat.
Not helpful when you already have one dog that’s spicy with cats.

So, I did something last week that I’ve never done with any of my dogs before, past and present.
I put a head collar on Myrtle.

Surprisingly, she was quite happy to wear it, as well as being a lot calmer. And, I now have so much more control.

Ethel is calmer, i’m relaxed and we all enjoy our walks again from the house.

This is only a management technique, so I will not be using it all the time, and training will be done alongside it.

I just wanted to share this with everyone, because I’m trying to be alot more transparent with my own dogs and training on social media.
It can be so easy to only put the good stuff online, but we all know there’s the not so good stuff that happens too.

Happy Friday folks 😊

Do you have daily struggles with your puppy jumping up?

If you do, be very careful what you and your family are reinforcing.

It’s very easy to start stroking a puppy when they jump up at you whilst your sat at the dinner table or on the sofa. You do it without thinking and carry on with what your doing.

Or when you have visitors to your home and everyone gets excited seeing the puppy.
If this is repeated, your puppy is going to get excited and start jumping up knowing they are the most important pup in the world.

Before you know it, a habit has been formed.

We often find it exceptable when we have a cute little puppy, but what about when they are fully grown. It’s usually a very different story.

How can you train your puppy not to jump up?

Try giving your puppy alternative behaviours to do, like sit, hand touch or leaning into your legs, reward heavily for these behaviours to begin with and the jumping up will be a thing of the past (or better still, it won’t become a habit in the first place)

Or if it has become a habit, try to manage your puppies behaviour so they can’t keep practising it.
E.g clipping them on a lead or putting them behind a baby gate until they are calm.

So think about what your going to allow as a family and be consistent.

YOU’VE GOT THIS 😉

Do you know how to greet an unknown dog?
22/08/2024

Do you know how to greet an unknown dog?

🛇 Use your Manners! 🛇
The Sniff test - Stop doing that!
The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of what they're actually doing.

🚩When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions.

🚩If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed.

🚩People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you.

🚩Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction.

🤔 If you are meeting a dog, what should you do?
⚠Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again.
⚠Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side.
⚠Ignore the dog & talk to the owner.
⚠Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats.

🐶This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.

Well done everyone some great sniffing in a very high distraction area at The Lead on Dog Shop in Weymouth. The dogs all worked so hard to locate the scents, thanks to Kay for running the session so I could join in with Muppet. Welcome to Marion and Whiskey hope you enjoyed it? 👏👏🎉

People often ask me, How long should they train their puppies for each day?
My answer - Little and often.

I like to call it kettle training

If your anything like me, I like a nice cuppa, so I’m often waiting for the kettle to boil.

So why not train your puppy

I always have a pot of treats and a clicker next to the kettle, and I do a few minutes training whilst I’m waiting.

👋🏻 A few hand touches

🛏 Send to a bed or mat

✋🏼 A sit or down stay

⚽️ Playing with your dog, then teaching them to calm down after

👀 Focus work

👃🏻 Passive indication (for scent work)

The list is endless and it doesn’t have to be whilst the kettle is on, it could be when the adverts are on tv or when you go to the loo (teach a stay outside the door)

And if your only doing mini training sessions, your puppy is going to put a lot more effort into it and it means you stop the session on a high with your pup wanting more.

Happy days 😁

Do you struggle to move on with your training?
It happens often, we get to a certain level with a behaviour and we can’t progress.

If your dog gets stuck or doesn’t understand, you may need to break down the behaviour into smaller steps.

Let’s look at the recall as an example.
Start off

1️⃣ In the house
2️⃣ In the back garden
3️⃣ In the front garden
4️⃣ On a quiet track on your walk holding a longline
5️⃣ On a quiet track, letting the longline trail
6️⃣ In a park at a non busy time, holding the longline
7️⃣ In a park at a non busy time, letting the line trail
8️⃣ On a walk with other people
9️⃣ In a park with dogs playing at a distance
1️⃣0️⃣ Slowly decrease the distance with other dogs

Try not to advance to the next step until your dog has mastered the previous one.

The recall can be broken down into many more steps, but this gives you an idea of how it should look.

DO YOU STRUGGLE RECALLING YOUR DOG?

🟡On a walk or in from the garden?

WHAT DOES A RECALL MEAN TO YOUR DOG?

🟡The fun stops?
⚫️They have to come in from the garden?
🟡It’s the end of a walk?

OR DOES IT MEAN

⚫️The fun starts?
🟡If they come straight back to you, they get to go play again?
⚫️Playing with a favourite toy with you?
🟡Fun games with treats?

Recall training doesn’t need to be boring or be a punishment.
If you make it more fun and worth your dogs while to come back, they’re more likely to come back to you.
Meaning a much more reliable recall = more freedom

Do you understand what your dog is saying?
15/08/2024

Do you understand what your dog is saying?

WHAT THE F?

Recognising stress responses in dogs.

Fight or flight are well known reactions to fear or stress, but these other “F” words are also important to understand and be aware of as they may not always be so obvious.

Freeze, Fawn, Fidget or Fool around are also responses to stress or fear and are also commonly seen in people.

Some dogs may have a genetic predisposition to one type of response while some react based on previous experience - what has worked for them before or what hasn’t. Some dogs have different reactions depending on the specific context.

Recognising and taking note of situations or circumstances where these responses are seen is important in understanding how our dogs are feeling.

When we recognise a fear or a stress response, we are able to intervene and advocate for our dogs.

I was lucky enough to take Ethel to Dorchester prison yesterday to do some scent work.
As you can imagine, a very different environment to what we are used to training in, but what an experience,
I also think it’s great that all the dogs were happy to hang out with each other between searches and us handlers can have a good old catch up.
It was good to see you Cheryl at Big Dog Little Dog: Puppy and Dog training and Emma at Embark Dog Training.

Thank you Lyn Happy Dogs Dorset for organising it 😊

Less is more when it comes to treats.

Many a time I see people training their dogs with huge chunks of cheese or big slices of chicken or sausage.
It’s great that they are using high value treats, but not so good that after 4 or 5 treats their dog is going to be full.

So what would be better, is to use smaller rewards and your dog always wanting more.
My general rule is to use treats smaller than a 5p coin.
Normally the size of my little finger nail.
If you need a jackpot because your dog has done something really amazing, deliver machine gun treats.
(1 treat after another rapidly)

When you’re a dog trainer, you don’t often get the opportunities to train your own dogs because you’re always teaching other people.
So, it’s really nice to work with another local dog trainer so we can all have the chance.

Today I went to Bridport Football Club to do some scent work in the stands, changing rooms and storage areas.

I had some of my own students and Lyn Wilson and some of her students at Happy Dogs Dorset.

Most of the dogs have only ever searched in the place they train on a weekly basis, so the football club was a very different environment.

All the dogs (and handlers) were amazing.

Thank you Lyn for arranging the venue and letting me loose to put the scents out.

Great post by Valleys Dog Behaviour And Training

You don’t have to be the perfect dog owner.

I’ve spoken to a few dog owners this week that feel immense pressure to be perfect for their dogs. I suspect social media plays a huge part in this.

We open up Facebook or Instagram or TikTok and are flooded with videos of dogs doing amazing training, going on beautiful hikes, eating bowls of gourmet and perfectly arranged food. I know that’s the sort of thing I post of my dogs on my socials because put quite simply, it’s more fun and engaging!

However I want to tell you, that if you feel like you’re not the perfect dog owner, don’t be so hard on yourself. The secret is, none of us are!

A training session that’s done while you sit on the floor in some grotty pjs and isn’t TikTok worthy is absolutely okay.

A walk that’s around a dreary industrial estate because you haven’t got the energy that day to take them up a mountain and film a beautifully curated reel is okay.

A bowl of food that’s nothing but their normal kibble with a blob of yogurt and a couple of wrinkly blueberries on top that isn’t Instagram worthy is okay.

We put huge pressure on ourselves and if we aren’t attaining ‘perfect dog ownership’ every day we are often horrible to ourselves. The thing is, your dog still loves you. He still loves the little training session at 9pm in your pjs. He still loves the dreary industrial estate. He still loves the biscuits and blob of yoghurt with the wrinkly blueberry.

Dogs are incredible and they just live in the moment, and they don’t EVER think less of you for not being perfect.

Take the pressure off yourself. Comparison is the thief of joy after all and often when we compare our dogs lives to the social media dogs lives, we feel like we aren’t meeting expectations. The truth is, that social media is a snap shot in time and isn’t the whole picture. You don’t have to be perfect and filtered and edited to have a happy dog.

Do you ever set yourself challenges with your dog, I know I do.

🔶It could be you want to be able to walk your dog along a street in town on a loose lead
🔳You want to be able to call your dog away from any distraction on a walk, no matter what
🔶You want to be able to go clear on a round of agility
🔳You can eat your evening meal with your dog quietly settled on there bed
🔶You want to be able to leave your dog at home without them getting up to mischief.
🔳You want to be able to walk past another dog or cat without your dog reacting.

These can all be big challenges, and sometimes people set the criteria to high for there dogs and they fail.

So to make it easier we set mini goals.

The loose lead walking challenge, we can have a mini goal of walking between 2 lampposts, then between 3 lampposts and so on.

There is nothing wrong with setting yourself a challenge, but make sure it’s realistic.
The the time scale is doable and the criteria is low enough to start with, so you set your dog up for success.

If you need any help with any of the above, please contact me and I will be happy to help.

🐶 Are you bringing a new puppy into your home imminently or maybe you have just brought a new bundle of fun into your family.

Do you need some support and guidance with your puppy?

These are some of the things I commonly get asked to help with.

🐾 What do I do the first night my puppy comes home?

🐶 How often will my puppy need to go out to the toilet?

🐾 How can I stop my puppy from tugging on my clothes?

🐶 How do I stop my puppy chasing the cat?

🐾 How do I stop my puppy from jumping up?

🐶 When can I start leaving my puppy home alone?

🐾 How should I introduce a lead to my puppy?

🐶 How do I get my puppy to like the car?

🐾 How long should I walk my puppy for?

🐶 What is the best food for my puppy?

🐾 When should I start letting my puppy off lead?

And the list goes on.........

If you have any questions relating to your puppy and their training, or you need some guidance and support, I do offer puppy home visits.
Aimed at puppies 8 weeks plus.

I can also give pre-puppy advice, so you know exactly what to expect and do from the second you bring your new puppy into their forever home.

🐾 MULTI DOG HOUSEHOLDS 🐾

Let’s talk multi dog households.
Do your dogs do everything together?

🐶 sleep together
🐶 eat near each other
🐶 walk together
🐶 play together

What happens if one day if they have to be separated, one of them hurts themselves and has to go to the vets, or has to be on crate rest, so no walking, sleeping or playing together.

This is a big stress to some dogs, so how about trying to do the odd separate walk, ‘special time’ with each dog, or only take one in the garden for some training whilst the other ones are in the house chewing a bone or chew toy.

It’s something I have always done with my past and present dogs, and they really don’t mind being left home on their own or waiting their turn to be trained.

I did a 1:1 with Margo the Hungarian Vizsla last week.
She’s very clever and her owners have done such a great job training her so far, but as she’s an adolescent, she just needs support and guidance to help her get things right in the coming months.
I can’t wait to see her again soon.
