🩺 Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month 🩺

Meet Lizzy.....

Lizzy is one of Haydon's newest members of staff.

Lizzy completed an animal welfare course as a mature student. She then got her foot in the door working as a clinical cleaner at a veterinary practice in Weymouth. This was a genius move by Lizzy as its so difficult to gain placements as a student nurse. Lizzy quickly progressed to an animal nursing assistant (ANA) with in that practice. She then became a student, qualifying as an Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) in 2018. Lizzy had many roles including on call, inpatient care and anaesthesia.

Lizzy joined Haydon's team six months ago. You May not of seen much of Lizzy as she quotes ''I'm happiest out the back, caring for patients or in theatre". Lizzy loves to learn new things and explore new ideas as medicine is always evolving. Lizzy has a a strong interest in anaesthesia, inpatient care and medicine.

Outside of work Lizzy enjoys baking (she's awesome by the way) and going to boot camp 💪💪

In 2019 Vicky found herself in Dorset and enjoyed the Bridport area so much that she jumped at the chance to work at Haydon Vets.

In 2023 she became the practice manager and successfully maintained the clinics Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Accreditation standards.

Outside of work she enjoys walking her dog Mouse and socialising with friends

🐱Veterinary Nurse awareness 🩺

Karina Stephenson RVN.

A little bit about our wonderful Karina.

Karina qualified as a nurse in 2017 after completing her training in a tier 3 hospital in Berkshire. She has a keen interest in anaesthesia and emergency work and so has completed over 60 hours of continued professional development (CPD) in this field over the last 3 years.

Did you know it’s mandatory as a registered nurse to complete 15 hours of (CPD) each year to remain on the nursing register and to stay up to date with best practice.
Outside of work Karina enjoys walking her dog with particular like for larger breeds and has a super soft spot for all things cat!
On top of her regular nursing duties she is responsible for health and safety checks for all anaesthesia equipment and keeping clients information records up to date.

Karina is also a clinical coach, guiding our students through their theory and practical assessments.

Karina is currently on maternity leave expecting her little bundle of joy very soon. We at Haydon's wish Karina, Ryan, Kiera and Peggy all the best for when the little one arrives. Most importantly we cant wait for your return after your leave.

Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month

Meet our Student Veterinary Nurse....Lanie

Lanie has been working along side our registered nurses as a Student and has nearly completed her one year work experience placement from Hartpury University. Lanie has been at Haydon's since July 2023.

Lanie has to complete 1800 hours in practice in her placement year (unpaid😱) and alongside this she has to complete a comprehensive Nursing Progress Log NPL (lots of case studies). She has already studied theory at University for 1 year and after her placement with us she will be back to Hartpury for a further 2 years before gaining her degree in Veterinary Nursing.

There are however other routes in gaining a qualification as a Veterinary Nurse and this can be through an apprenticeship, where you will work in practice as well as attending college one day a week, also completing the NPL. (Paige our other Student nurse is taking this route)

When asked, why do you want to be in a veterinary nurse? Lanie replied that it was the encouragement of her school and her work experience at a vets in year 11.

We all know how much we will miss Lanie when she leaves at the end of the summer. Good luck Lanie 🍀

🩺Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month🩺

Meet Lucy Haydon's Head Nurse...….

Lucy trained as a Veterinary Nurse in Australia back in 2012. She worked in small animal hospital in Adelaide and volunteered with a native Australian wildlife centre during her qualification.

On route back to the UK she volunteered in a variety of locations across South east Asia and Fiji helping with neutering programmes before coming to Dorset in 2014 and has been at Haydon Vets since then!

She started off as an RVN before becoming Head Nurse in 2016.
Lucy is often behind the scenes doing Rotas, practice orders and ensuring the smooth day to day running of procedures.

Her interest lies mostly in anaesthesia, patient care and preparation for operations and if any wildlife comes in she is always keen to lend a hand!

Lucy is also a clinical coach, helping our students to complete their Nursing Progress logs.

In her spare time Lucy loves to go on long walks with her cocker spaniel Josie, enjoy family beach days when the weather allows and any overseas travelling.

Upsetting post

Unfortunately we have had two deceased cats bought into the practise this morning by a member of the public. We believe they have both been involved in a road traffic collision.
They were found near to Colours Hair salon and the entrance to Dodhams lane on St Andrews Road. Neither cats were microchipped.

Our star 🌟 patient today is Lemmy.

Lemmy’s observent owners noticed one of his testicles had become enlarged and was growing very quickly. Two days ago Oliver advised castration and today Lemmy had his procedure.

Our vets and nurses routinely check testicles at vaccine and 6 monthly healthy pet check clinics. We would also advise owners of entire male dogs to check at home.

🎉🎊🥳Celebrating our fabulous reception duo today in what is Veterinary Receptionists Week.🎊🎉🥳

Chrissie has dedicated nearly 25 years of service to Haydon Vets. 🌟

Shelly and Chrissie are often the first people you will have contact with, when either ringing or visiting the practice. These are often very happy occasions but they can be very sad also.

Both Chrissie and Shelly have lots of other roles with in the practice and we would be lost without them.

Work has started today on replacing parts of our flooring in the practice. This means that the usual front door will be out of use and we will ask you to come in through the side door when you arrive.

Please bear with us whilst the work is under way as there will inevitably be some disruption. We hope that it will be completed by the end of next week.

Thank you for understanding.

In case anyone in Bridport is missing their dog, We have had a report from a member of the public of a large, brown labradoodle or Italian spinone type dog that was seen running from the allington area towards Bridport. Had a red collar with an ID tag on, but the member of the public couldn't get close enough to read it.

Meet little and large. Also known as Luna and Bentley.
Luna weighs just 3.5kg whilst Bentley weighed in at a whooping 92kg today.
Both of these dogs are so placid and love their visits to the practice.
Bentley saw Oliver the vet this morning for his annual vaccinations. Bentley weighs more than Olly! Its not often that this happens.
Luna saw Emma our nurse for her monthly flea and worm checks as she is still a growing puppy.
