All about the fascial edge tool. (The magical spoon!)
This tool is very effective in tackling stubborn trigger points as well as releasing resticted fibrosed tissue, particularly fascia.

Fascia is a connective tissue that encases each and every structure around the body to help allow for more freedom of movement and shock absorption.
If restricted full range of movement cannot be achieved and an onset negative chain reaction to the rest of the body will be present.

The fascial edge tool is great for !!
🔥tightness
🔥 fascial restriction
🔥 trigger points
🔥 increasing blood flow
🔥 reducing scar tissue
🔥 improving lymphatic drainage
🔥 deep tissue massage

Lunge and ridden assessments available !!

Meet Milo - 14 yo grey
The lovely Milo has collected quite the clinical history prior to his owner having him. I currently have been treating Milo for his history of sacroiliac dysfunction, stifle pain and proximal suspensory desmitis. He more recently has had a set back but his owners are super on it with looking out for stuff and his general care and he is progressing well and more happy within him self.

Yesterday he underwent a thorough dynamic assessment both Inhand on a hard surface and on a soft surface on the lunge. Followed by a treatment to which he thoroughly enjoyed and showed some lovely signs of release.

Meet Jack - 9 yo dark bay
Jack received his follow up treatment yesterday. With no preexisting clinical conditions present his owner is keen to keep him happy, comfortable and performing well.

He was assessed under saddle today to create a clearer picture of how he is performing with his rider. I’m really pleased as he is making excellent progress and his owner has been very good at keeping on top of his exercise prescription.

I feel it vital to carry out thorough assessment either on the lunge or under saddle to help create a clearer picture as to what’s going on and how my treatment can help. I feel this helps make for more efficient and effective care and exercise prescription.

If you’re interested in the lunge or ridden assessments as a separate service or as an add on to your treatment please contact me prior to booking

Lungeing sessions should not last longer than 20 minutes. Here’s why:

• Horses did not evolve to move in circles.
• Lungeing is hard work on the horse’s joints, tendons and muscles.
• Overwork on the lunge (or any situation) can cause pain, injury, discomfort and fatigue.

According to Australian researchers, ‘In an 18-m diameter round-pen, approximately 20 circuits equal 1 km. In just 20 minutes of lunging or round-pen work, a horse may cover around 5 km in distance which, as we postulate, poses musculoskeletal risks due to the constant circular track. Therefore, round-pen/lunging sessions exceeding 20 minutes should be avoided’ (https://tinyurl.com/CuttingTheChase).

For more recommendations about lungeing for horse welfare and rider safety, download Pony Club Australia’s NEW Lungeing Guidelines https://tinyurl.com/lungeing

Iv been treating the lovely Daisy for a trauma injury sustained to her check ligament. She’s had a period of rest and has received weekly radiofrequency treatment to help correct collagen alignment, reduce inflammation and overall enhance healing to prevent reinjury.

These photos are just 4 weeks apart.

Photo 1 - the lesion is large in size with a lot of inflammation present throughout the whole limb.
Photo 2 - the lesion has slightly reduced on both sides and is feeling harder in tone where scar tissue is forming, reduced heat was felt over the lesion and lower limb
Photo 3 - the lesion had massively decreased in size. No inflammation was present and the scar tissue was a lot softer in tone.
Photo 4 - the global size of the limb has dramatically decreased and is starting to form a more normal shape.

Daisy has since had had her re scan from the vets and after just 4 weekly sessions she is trotting up sound and has been given the all clear to start strengthening work. With the ligament healed and showing no signs of holes she can now begin to build up her turnout time and start ridden work 😃

The answer is both !!!

Although both very different professions that work on different things, when used in conjunction with one another they can complement each other extremely well for optimum performance!

Movement occurs by muscle moving bone. If certain muscles are tight this can affect movement. However if bones are out of alignment this can also place added tension on the muscles.

Chiropractic practitioners focus mainly on the musculoskeletal system and the realignment of bones to support movement

Whereas physiotherapist work to manipulate muscles & soft tissues to release tension and restore function to also support movement

It is recommended that massage when used before a chiropractic treatment can help reduce stress and break through some initial tension to help relax the muscles to aid in making chiropractic treatment more effective.

📢 Exciting announcement 📢

I’m am now very pleased to announce I will be offering Tecar radiofrequency therapy as a part of my practice!!

How does it work? What is it ??

Radiofrequency uses electromagnetic waves in a closed circuit to generate heat in deep tissues, the heat induces vasodilation (opening of blood vessels) and stimulates the lymphatic system to help dissolve adhesions in the tissue. By improving drainage and stimulating cell recovery. Inflammation and pain is reduced so that healing can accelerate.

This can be used to assist in both muscular, articular or tendinous injuries.
For example:
- Tendon/ ligament strains or tears
- Osteoarthritis
- Sacroiliac dysfunction
- Spinal pathologies accompanied with back pain

What muscles are targeted during a hindlimb protraction stretch ?

This mainly targets the hamstring group. Consisting of the semitendionosus, semimembranosus, gracilis and bicep femoris

Along with this it has some action over the gluteals both superficial and accessory

And finally the lumbar part of the longissimus Dorsi

For more information on how to perform this stretch correctly and if it would be appropriate to add into your horses care routine contact a qualified practitioner. Such as a veterinary physiotherapist

Polite notice to clients new and old!!

Bank transfers are a trust based payment and whilst they work well when payments are prompt they can collectively quickly leave debts making it impossible to meet wage demands and outgoing vehicle and equipment costs.

Whilst I appreciate people have busy lives and can forget about payments I have had far too many late or unpaid payments recently. I try to remain reliable and work hard and try to charge an affordable rate for treatment. But I am a small business and I don’t always have time to chase payments.

Therefore all payments for treatment will be taken on the day of the appointment. Please be prepared to provide cash or bank transfer on the day of treatment.
I don’t want to cease bank transfer but the cash flow can become unreliable.

If you need reminding of my pricing or have any queries please drop me a message.

I’m sorry to have to write such a negative status but thank you for those who took the time to read it.

Apologies and thank you also to those of my lovely clients who are exceptionally good and prompt in paying, you havnt gone unrecognised and I’m extremely grateful.

Kind Regards
Emily

🎉 I offer pulsed electromagnetic field therapy 🎉
Also knows as pemft

What is pemft

Pemft is a non invasive therapy that can help to provide pain relief for both acute and chronic conditions, reduce swelling and oedema and promote good quality healing.

Conditions that can benefit

- Sacroiliac dysfunction
- Oedema and swelling
- Acute or chronic injury/pain
- Osteoarthritis
- Bone/ fracture repair
- Peripheral nerve damage

In a nutshell pemft induces a mild electrical magnetic current into damaged cells. It slows or stops inflammatory and pain mediators whilst increasing blood flow of the cells to help reestablish normal cell interaction. This in turn helps to speed up the rate of healing.

🛑 TIGHT HAMSTRINGS 🛑

Today this lovely little 4 year old butterfly presented to be very reactive and sore bilaterally over her hamstring group

Hamstring soreness can occur from many factors such as
- Fatigue
- Injury or predisposing pathology
- Increased workload that requires collection such as dressage and jumping especially before the muscles are acclimatised
- Pelvic asymmetry
- Muscular weakness
- Poor foot balance

All about collection !!!

For a horse to be able to collect there lumbar spine must be able to flex (lower back must become rounded).
During collection the lower back, hamstrings and gluteals should all work together. However in some cases if the lower back is unable to flex and extend the hamstrings can end up taking the majority of the strain. This can cause them to become overdeveloped, sore and lead to spasm. (The rippling seen in the first video). The gluteals can also become neglected where they are not used and may deteriorate. Overall causing weakness within the hindlimb and an inability to be able to engage there hindlimb effectively. Compensatory soreness within the pelvis, hock and stifles could also occur in some cases.

Horses with tight hamstrings may struggle with lifting there leg for the farrier, circles, jumping, canter and movements that require collection.

The second video shows butterfly’s muscles after treatment and how much more comfortable they are to touch.

Butterfly will receive a course of physio treatment targeted to all her areas of soreness to help overall improve her comfort and way of going.

Thermotherapy
Also known as heat therapy

Heat therapy improves circulation to an area due to the increased temperature. This allows the soothing of irritated nerve endings. Which helps to provide quick pain relief and increased muscular elasticity and relaxation within the tissue.

With the increased blood flow and flexibility to the affected area, more oxygen and nutrients can travel to the injured tissues while flushing out waste products and damaged debris.

Heat can be a useful tool when applied correctly in short durations at the right time. Note it should not be used on open wounds, directly after physical activity, injury, or during an infection. As this can cause prolonged healing and an increase in pain.

What Is percussive therapy

massage using rapid and repetitive pressure combined with vibration. In instances such as a theragun the massage head moves quickly and forcefully, applying pressure directly to the soft tissue, while the vibrations engage the outer layer of skin. This helps to loosen soft tissue and increase blood flow.

Benefits

- Soothes sore muscles
- Increases blood flow
- Increased tissue flexibility
- Increased range of motion

Please note that a theragun should only be applied by a qualified practitioner. They can do a lot of damage when applied incorrectly.

They should never be used over sensitive areas that have undergone a trauma, inflammation or any vital organs. Bony points should be avoided at all times.
Like any therapy they don’t work for every case but can sometimes be a useful tool.

“There are several ways to fit”

This is something that we hear not only from riders and owners but also saddle fitters and saddle manufacturers, however, this statement completely ignores the fact that the physiology of the horse and rider remains the same in what they need to not have injury or pain caused by the saddle.

What it also fails to understand is that there are 2 main components within saddle fitting, one is the RULE which is determined by the unique and specific needs of the horse and rider, determined by their anatomy and biomechanics. The second is the METHOD which is determined by the saddle and how it’s been built. The two combined are what create saddle fitting as a whole, and neither should be ignored at any step of the process.

The unfortunate reality is that many saddle fitters don’t understand the distinction between the rule and method, and oftentimes blur that line which ends in horses who are forced into compensation due to the saddle and imbalanced rider. The issue is further compounded by owners and even some veterinarians who are either blind to, or ignore the subtle signs of discomfort and dysfunction in the horse so long as they are functional, which is routinely believed to equal sound. It does not.

A single horse can have 6 different saddles fitting via 6 different methods if all of the saddles are built differently and made with different materials that vary in their rigidity, adjustability, flocking material, and so on. As long as each saddle adheres to the rules set out by the horse, the methodology of the fit is secondary.

That said, even the RULE of saddle fitting is often misunderstood by fitters, manufacturers, and other professionals who take arbitrary measurements that have no bearing on what the horse actually needs and seeks to fit the horse to the saddle, not the saddle to the horse. Not to mention manufacturers who feed nonsensical bu****it (not sorry) to owners about their saddles, creating torture devices that cripple these animals, meanwhile, the company makes off with your money while you’re stuck with a horse that can no longer be ridden. Statements that completely ignore the most basic laws of physics, ignore the anatomy of the horse, ignore the anatomy of the rider, and downplay the fact that horses change shape throughout their life, many of them just flat out lying through their teeth to make their saddle seem like the next best thing since sliced bread. Not to mention continually pushing the narrative that flocking is a fix-all and will magically make your saddle fit when flocking alone is so severely limiting and can quite often make things worse.

The reason we share as much information as we do is that we believe that every single person who has any dealings with horses should have a basic understanding of how the body functions and how it relates to saddle fitting to ensure the saddle does not cause the horse to become unsound.

We’re often asked what brand we recommend or what the best brands are.
The simple answer is whatever fits. That’s it.

How often should my horse see a physio ?

Physiotherapy is beneficial for any horse whether it be a *5 eventer to a happy hacker or a companion.

Please note that physiotherapy doesn’t always have to be for injury, soreness or soundness it can be utilised to help improve overall general health. Whilst helping put preventative care in place to reduce the risk of injury. Especially if there as predisposing factors such as poor conformation. After all prevention is often better than cure.

I recommend that you stick to these guidelines to keep your horse, fit, healthy and happy

- Maintenance: every 4 to 6 months, this can be dependent on the horse however and may vary
- Horses in full work or competition: at least every 6 to 12 weeks
- Rehabilitation: this again can vary for example cases such as sacroiliac dysfunction should be seen regularly every 4 to 6 weeks until muscle function has improved.
- Wound healing : for example ligament or tendon rehabilitation may be seen every week or less frequently depending on there time of healing.
