π’ Today the Coastal Cat Vet turned two years old π₯³ Happy Purrthday to us π₯³
Thank you to all of our lovely Coastie owners who entrust the care of their furballs to our little independent practice, to my amazing team who care so deeply, and finally to all the cats themselves - some of you love us (OK we know it's the treats really π»)...some of you tolerate us πΌ...and some of you couldn't care less πΎ...but we love every single one of you and your fantastical feline ways πππββ¬οΈπΊ
Here is a little video of some of those incredible personalities we've had the pleasure of getting to know this year πβ€
As a little birthday thank-you, the first ten of our Coastie family that comment here will get a little treat for their kitty delivered through the door soon π»

So because last week was a bit of a juggling act with staff sickness...π€ we have decided to say..
π πΎ Happy Mew Year πΎ π to all our wonderful cats and their humans this week instead!
2023 was our first full year as Brighton and Hove's first feline-only, mobile-only clinic - and our first as a team of four as Lauren joined us and we celebrated our first birthday in April π
We want to say a huge thank you to those of you that have supported us and told your family and friends about us - helping our small, family-run business to grow and reach other cat-loving owners. We don't take anything for granted and I know I've said it before but we utterly love what we do and feel so privileged to get to look after your furry family. 2024 is shaping up to be another great year so please keep still spreading the love and we will see you armed with lick-e-lix and treats-a-plenty on your doorstep sometime soon!

π Merry Christmas π to all our wonderful cats, owners and followers! We are now off to spend some much-needed time with our families - but will be back next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday should you need us! Thank you to lovely nurse Holly and vet Natalia for allowing the team some time to do that last minute panic-buying (!) and to @newprioryvetspets as always for looking after any emergencies in our absence. Please note emails and PetsApps will not be monitored during this period.
Stay safe, keep warm, look after each other and take some lessons from our fantastic felines to just sleep, eat and reeeeeelax ππβ€
Sending Christmas love from Nikki, Paula, Lauren & Eva ###x

Meet Spider π· β an amazing little chap that very nearly didnβt make itβ¦
Back in June Erika, his owner contacted us as he was lethargic, not eating, opening his mouth when purring and hidingβ¦but as a rescue cat from Egypt he wasnβt used to any kind of handling which made home visits the only option for him and his owner. However, from the moment I saw him I was concerned about FIP, so we decided to transfer him to the wonderful @PETS for emergency imaging of his lungs and draining of the pleural effusion (fluid in his chest). FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) is a life-threatening condition in cats that used to be a death sentenceβ¦but thankfully a licensed treatment protocol has recently been found and is saving cats lives worldwide. Before we even had a confirmed diagnosis I opted to get him home to reduce his stress levels (which further contributes to FIP) and start treatment in the form of daily Remdesivir injections. By Day 3, amazingly Spider was strong enough to start taking the oral form of treatment (GS-441524).
It is now accepted amongst the feline veterinary community that if the suspicion for FIP is strong enough on clinical signs alone then treatment can, and should, be initiated.
Spider is now coming up for 4 weeks of treatment and will require another 8 weeks before he can stopβ¦ but he is a different cat β as you can see from the pictures/videos which show how he was before treatment and how he is now. What has been truly wonderful throughout all of this has been that Spider has gone from being petrified to now forming an unbreakable bond with his wonderful owner Erika β playing and cuddling like never before β€οΈ Once he was accepting the oral treatment we were able to step back and just keep in touch via PetsApp with pictures and videos so our home visits have reduced. But even now when we do visit Spider, he doesnβt run from us like he used to. We are so proud of him and Erika and are keeping all toe-beans crossed for
Meet our most recent hero Dizzee π»
This gorgeous boy became really ill very quickly with a condition known as Triaditis which is made up from enteritis, pancreatitis and cholangiohepatitis (inflammation of the gut, pancreas and liver) we suspect due to infection. His symptoms were profound nausea preventing him from wanting to eat, lethargy, fever and abdominal pain..leading on to jaundice (yellowing of his skin/membranes). He became very dehydrated and so after sending him for a stay at the wonderful @PETS for some intravenous fluids we were able to treat him as an outpatient at home - where he was happiest π
His treatment consisted of daily subcutaneous fluids, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, anti-nausea and appetite stimulants - which meant huge dedication from his amazing owners who nursed him throughout...and slowly but surely Dizzee responded until this moment when he ate from our hands π₯° There is honestly nothing better for us than watching such a poorly patient take that tentative step to eat again and start their road to recovery - all in the comfort of their own home.
Dizzee is now back to his wonderful, mischievous self - swipe for pictures of him happy at home in his garden π³πΎ

Meet Bagheera (or Baggy to his friends) π»
This is how we aim to take blood at The Coastal Cat Vet - gabapentin to calm a couple of hours before (if needed), quiet clippers, skin-numbing agent, the sharpest needles (believe me, it matters!), a world-leading lab that understands we don't need a large sample to run all our tests and most importantly careful, gentle handling in the comfort of Baggy's own home β€
No carrier, no journey, no dogs...just lick-e-lix and no stress β€

We are so incredibly lucky to have the experience, care and skill of Paula and Eva - our registered veterinary nurses - on the Coastie team. This month is a chance to shine a light on #whatRVNsdo as so much of it happens behind the scenes. This video just shows a snapshot of all the incredible skills RVNs need to have in order to look after our patients.. but as home-visiting cat nurses they also have to adapt to any situation - always whilst putting the welfare of our wonderful patients first. The theme of BVNA's campaign this year is "empowerment" - and when I think of our nurses I am so proud of how they empower our owners to be the best they can be. I literally couldn't do my job without them π #VNAM2023 #WhatVNsDo #EmpowerOurVNs
π Happy 1st Purrrthday to us!!!π
I cannot believe a year ago we started out wondering if this little idea of being able to treat cats in their own homes would work in Brighton & Hove - and here we are a year later loving what we do and so grateful to be part of this amazing community. Every cat we see, every owner we meet, means so much to us and makes three cat-mad, veterinary-loving individuals feel very privileged to that you open your homes and your hearts to us. We have a learnt a lot along the way, and we still are - hoping that we can be the best that we can be. Thank you to all of you for having faith in this little independent business and we cannot wait to share some fizz and felines with you tonight at our 1st year birthday event π»π₯ Still a few tickets left if you want to come along - link in bio πΎ #brightonandhove #brightonvet #hovevet #felinevet #felineRVN #mobilevet
It's been a busy week at TCCV HQ! π€ΆπWe've been delivering as many cards and our little handmade gifts to our wonderful cats and their humans all week alongside consults and our usual vetty stuff! For those of you we haven't managed to see this week we are sending you so much love this Christmas - and thanks for choosing us to be your vet - it really means the world to me, Paula and Eva π₯°
Now to spend some quality time with the family - eating too much and cat-cuddling. Watch out for some very cute pics of Coastal kitties enjoying our pressies.. π»
