We often refer to dogs as our pets. An animal that the kids can play with. A captive friend whose fur we can cry into on a bad day. We often hear them called ‘it’ and expect them to fit into a little set of rules to be a good family pet. And if they don’t meet our expectations or stay enthusiastic and trouble-free housemates, we have cultivated a belief that we must train them, and then they will behave better.

But what about what the dog wants?

Or how they feel?

And what about all the lessons we can learn from them? What if we stop trying to impose our will onto them? Imagine if your dog could do so much more than being a good family pet.

I urge you now to give pause on the idea that your dog might just need more training and instead step back and watch them better, learn their language, question their beliefs, and improve their agency.

Dog training has been the go-to response to the family dog simply showing us their needs for too long. It’s time to rethink the place of dog training.

It’s time to have a much better and more enriching relationship with our dogs, where creating different responses and behaviour through training is a small part of the bigger picture -and not the whole canvas.

Another disappointing day in the life of rescuing these street dogs. The lovely Bella, whose adoptive home was taken away when the shelter she was staying at decided to offer her new owner another dog, has lost another home.

We conducted the interview, asked all the right questions, but when we arrived there were two cats at the property, when we were told there were none. Bella would prefer a pet-free household so sadly her adoption did not go ahead again.

She is such a sweet girl. After five months of publicising her everywhere we can, we will continue fighting to find this girl a loving furever home.

My costs are now R$15,000 and rising, if you can help, I'll leave the l1nk down there.

The RSPCA are looking for foster homes for some of their cats and dogs.

🐶 CALLING ALL CAT AND DOG LOVERS 🐱

We are in need of people who would be happy to foster either a cat or a dog!

Some animals really struggle with the kennel and cattery environment which can cause very high levels of stress, leading to both negative medical and behavioural implications. Fostering provides an invaluable support to our animals whilst we try to find them their forever homes.

The fostering scheme is fully supported and includes a range of dogs and cats. This includes but is not limited to: Animals on medication, nervous animals, very elderly animals, very young animals, pregnant animals and mothers with young babies. We are currently looking for foster homes without other animals and without young children.

💜🐾Diesel is now our longest waiting dog in rescue for his forever home...and we really cannot understand why this handsome chap isn't even getting an enquiry!

Diesel is 8 years old,he absolutely loves his walks,finding sticks and going for a swim.He has good recall and walks politely past other dogs,however can be reactive to some.

Diesel has had many homes in his life prior to SSR being asked to help,we would dearly love to find him his Happy Ever After.
