Sometimes it’s often overlooked and easy to miss! Especially as the skin is often hidden by lots of fur Signs include bald patches, darkened or thickened skin, red skin, pink feet
(saliva staining), red/pink skin or rashes. It’s always best to get your pet checked if you’re worried about their skin.

Microchipping cats becomes compulsory by 10th June 2024 🐾

The new rule mean cats must be implanted with a microchip before they reach the age of 20 weeks and their contact details stored and kept up to date in a pet microchipping database. All owners must have their cat microchipped no matter the age by 10 June 2024 and owners found not to have microchipped their cat will have 21 days to have one implanted, or may face a fine of up to £500.

On 1st September 2023 new regulations from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons were introduced, with additional rules coming into force on 12th January 2024.

As a result, we have had to change the way we provide your veterinary care.

Now, vets can only legally prescribe some prescription medicines, including antibiotics and some medicines that treat parasites (like fleas and worms), immediately after physically examining your pet.

This may mean an extra visit or so to the practice, but please bear with us while we put new systems in place to help minimise the effect these changes will have on you.

You can continue to order flea and wormer treatments through our website link (https://www.coastwayvets.co.uk/repeat-prescriptions) as long as it meets the new regulations from RCVS.

It’s also important to know, this change has been made by our regulator the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), and it's beyond our control. In addition, this has been put in place to fight drug resistance and environmental contamination.

Thank you for your understanding and we are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

This week we said goodbye to a dog that has a very special place in the Portlsade teams heart. Billy was a diabetic and came in often to have his BG monitored, so in turn we got to know him well. We will miss your loving kisses and as with every pet, we are thankful for your time.

Unfortunately, due to a manufacturing issue there is a national shortage of some cat vaccines (Nobivac Tricat and FeLV). Consequently, we must prioritise our existing stock for essential needs, as explained below:


PRIORITY:
Kittens that already had their first injection of the primary vaccination course (Tricat+FeLV) :
- Second injection will proceed as scheduled 3 to 4 weeks later, as long as stock lasts.

Young cats due for their first yearly booster (Tricat + FeLV):
- Boosters will remain as scheduled as long as stock lasts.

DELAYED:
Unvaccinated kittens:
- Please keep them indoors.
- Contact your nearest branch to be added to the waiting list.

Adult cats due for their yearly booster:
- If due for Tricat + FeLV (done every 3 years): this can be delayed without risk for up to 3 months. Our team is currently calling clients with cats due for October/November vaccines to add them to our waiting list. If you haven't heard from us and believe your cat needs this vaccine, please contact your nearest branch.
- If due for Ducat: boosters will remain as scheduled (no shortage).

If you are not sure which vaccine your cat is due, please contact us and we will check for you.

We are trying our best to manage this unfortunate situation, and we do ask for your understanding that this is something that is beyond our control. We hope to have this issue resolved as soon as possible.

The latest news at Portslade is that we are welcoming our wonderful new graduate vet, Jen. Jen works at both our Shoreham branch as well as on specific days with us at PS. Jen hails from Scotland and she tells me that she is absolutely calling Brighton her new home. Jen loves a Chihuahua, as you can see from this sweet picture.

After 6 years working at both the hospital and our Portlsade branch we say goodbye to our wonderful nurse Arlene. We will miss her wicked humour, support and love but are so thankful for all she has done for animals over the years:-)

This week we are introducing our lovely Quinton!

Quinton is a registered veterinary nurse from South Africa, who has worked at coastway for 3 years.
Before joining us Quinton worked with animal charities treating sick animals abroad for 2 years. He still continues his amazing work raising money for animal sanctuaries.
His passions are pet education and consultations- if you book in for a nurse consult you may just meet him 🐾

Hello and a very warm welcome to our new vet Natalie; we are simply thrilled to have her join our little family here at the Portslade branch. Natalie states she has a great interest in geriatric medicine (helping alleviate pain in arthritic pets) and X-Ray diagnostics. We also cannot wait to meet her handsome dog Oakley.

Carrigan is going to be joining the team at our Portslade branch as their new Head Nurse! As we wish Lizzie well in her new venture.

“Hey I’m Carrie, I’ve been working at Coastway for a year and a half now, originally starting here as a night nurse at the hospital. I have a cheeky little black cat named Jasper who is nearly 9 now. Outside of work I enjoy dancing whenever I can and going on walks with my boyfriend”

We wish Carrie all the best in her new role at Portslade! 🩺🐾
