Shared from our friends at Sompting:

🚨 **Ant Season Warning: Look Out for Staggering Seagulls!** 🚨

The young ants have started hatching across Sussex —and while that’s part of nature’s rhythm, it’s bringing unexpected trouble for our local seagulls. These ants release formic acid as a natural defense. In small amounts, it’s harmless, but when gulls gobble down a feast of ants, it can cause them to appear **disoriented or ‘drunk, stumbling around and struggling to fly properly.

This sadly makes them much more vulnerable near roads, as they may not move quickly enough to avoid traffic. If you see a gull behaving strangely by the roadside, **please slow down** and give them space—they might just need a little time to recover.

⚠️ Important: These gulls can show symptoms that look like bird flu, which raises concerns. But in many cases, they’re not sick at all. Let’s avoid unnecessary action like euthanasia—a bit of fresh water and rest is often enough to get them back on their feet (or wings!).

Let’s help our feathered friends through this odd patch of nature. 🐜🕊️💚

🐰 Myxomatosis is a widespread, life-threatening virus ⚠️

Cases are seen frequently in unvaccinated rabbits, causing tumour like swellings and decreases the rabbit’s ability to fight infection, so they tend to catch additional bacterial infections that cause severe respiratory disease.

The best way to protect your rabbit is with regular vaccinations throughout their life. This not only protects them, but also decreases the spread of disease. Check with your vet today if your rabbit’s vaccinations are up to date.

We have had a black/brown and white chihuahua/jack Russel type dog. Entire. Very friendly, not microchipped but was wearing a red collar. Found near postcode BN1 8ZB. If your dog is missing than please give our Brighton Branch a call 😊🐕📞

We had a stray cat brought into our Peacehaven branch on Tuesday. The cat was checked by our Vet and there was no clinical reason to keep her in our hospital, the cat was not microchipped so following guidelines the cat was released back to Collingwood Close in Peacehaven that day.

🦊We had a very poorly fox cub brought in to our Brighton branch today. He clearly had been through the wars with multiple wounds and lame on one of his hind limbs. After an assessment by our veterinary team, he was certianly fiesty enough for a second chance.

Not having the facilities for fox cubs we needed to get him to a wildlife hospital as soon as possible.

🥰 Luckily the wonderful Brighton and Hove Wildlife Rescue group had a volunteer who kindly agreed to transfer to Wildlife Aid in Surrey for further veterinary assessment and care.

Fingers crossed they can get him fixed and home!🤞

It's that time of the year again! Breeding season for many of our wild birds and mammals is well underway.

Unfortunately with humans and wildlife sharing the same space, often we can accidently disturb nests or dens when carrying out gardening or home Improvements.

It's important not to panic and know what to do. Also whilst you may feel bad, don't let that stop you calling a rescue or your vets. We just want to help.

Please see our help guide attached as to whether a bird needs help. Many young birds are taken from their parents every year by well meaning members of the public wanting to do the right thing. It's often the case that these baby birds are fledgling and being well looked after by mum and dad. It takes a large amount of valuable charity resources to care for these little ones when it may not of been necessary.

When in doubt give a rescue a shout! They will happily give you advice on what to do :)

If you find a baby animal that does require help, keep them warm in a suitable container with air holes and get them to a wildlife rescue or vet.

✋️🛑Do not attempt to force feed or force water. It's very easy for them in inhale and aspirate.

🐱Feline leukaemia is highly contagious & life-threatening.⚠️

Once the 2nd biggest killer of young cats after traffic accidents, this virus is still seen in the UK. It decreases a cat’s ability to fight infection and affected cats develop serious health problems including cancer and anaemia.

The best way to protect your cat is through regular vaccinations throughout their life. This not only protects them, but also decreases the spread of disease. Check with your vet today if your cat’s vaccinations are up to date.

🐱Panleukopaenia is life-threatening & highly contagious.⚠️

Cases are seen frequently in unvaccinated cats due to the virus’ ability to survive in the environment for over a year. Less than 50% of cats will survive this, even with intensive care treatment.

The best way to protect your cat is through regular vaccinations throughout their life. This not only protects them, but also decreases the spread of disease. Check with your vet today if your cat’s vaccinations are up to date.

🐱Cat flu is widespread, debilitating & highly contagious.⚠️

Cases are seen frequently in unvaccinated cats due to the virus being spread by direct or indirect contact with infected cats, which means your cat can catch it from an area an infected cat has explored.

The best way to protect your pet is by vaccinating them every year. This not only protects them, but also decreases the spread of disease. Check with your vet today if your cat’s vaccinations are up to date.
