๐Ÿฉธ๐Ÿถ Could your dog help save another dog's life?

Just like people, dogs sometimes need blood transfusions during emergencies, major surgery, or when they're suffering from illnesses such as severe anaemia. That's where Pet Blood Bank UK comes in.

Pet Blood Bank UK is the UK's only charity dedicated to providing a blood banking service for dogs. They collect blood from generous canine donors and distribute lifesaving blood products to veterinary practices across the country, helping thousands of pets every year.

๐Ÿพ What does Pet Blood Bank UK do?

๐Ÿฅ Helps vets provide emergency treatment for injured or critically ill dogs.
๐Ÿ“š Raises awareness about the importance of canine blood donation.

๐Ÿ• Could your dog be a donor?

In general, donor dogs should:
โœ”๏ธ Be between 1 and 8 years old.
โœ”๏ธ Weigh over 25kg.
โœ”๏ธ Be fit, healthy, and confident around people.
โœ”๏ธ Have a calm temperament.
โœ”๏ธ Be fully vaccinated.

Every donation has the potential to help save the lives of up to four other dogs.

If you think your dog could become a lifesaving hero, speak to our team or visit Pet Blood Bank UK to learn more about donor eligibility and upcoming donation sessions.

A little time from one healthy dog could mean a lifetime for another. โค๏ธ๐Ÿพ

We all know about the different dog blood types... but cats are a little different! ๐Ÿฉธ

Dogs can either be:
๐Ÿถ DEA 1 positive (the most common, around 70% of donors)
๐Ÿถ DEA 1 negative (the rarer 30%)

Cats have three blood types:
๐Ÿฑ Type A (the most common)
๐Ÿฑ Type B (less common)
๐Ÿฑ Type AB (the rarest)

Just like in humans, matching blood types is vital when a pet needs a lifesaving transfusion โค๏ธ

No matter their blood type, every donation helps save the life of another pet in need ๐Ÿพ

๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿถ Making a Splash? Keep Your Pets Safe Around Water This Summer! โ˜€๏ธ

Warm weather often means days out by the beach, rivers, or lakesโ€”but while many dogs love the water, it's important to keep their safety in mind.

๐Ÿ’™ Top tips for a safe day by the water:

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Never assume your dog can swim. Not all dogs are natural swimmers, and even confident swimmers can become tired or get into difficulty.

๐ŸŒŠ Be aware of strong currents and tides. Rivers can have fast-moving water beneath the surface, and the sea can have strong currents and changing tides that are difficult to spot.

๐ŸŽพ Avoid throwing toys into rough water. Dogs can become exhausted trying to retrieve them, especially in waves or strong currents.

๐Ÿ’ง Discourage your dog from drinking the water. Salt water can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, and dehydration, while stagnant water in ponds or lakes may contain harmful bacteria or blue-green algae.

๐Ÿฆบ Consider a dog life jacket. They can provide extra buoyancy and confidence, particularly for puppies, older dogs, or those enjoying boating or paddleboarding adventures.

๐Ÿšฟ Rinse your dog after swimming. Washing off salt, sand, mud, or lake water helps protect their skin and coat and reduces the chance of irritation.

๐Ÿ‘€ Keep an eye out afterwards. If your dog develops vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, excessive thirst, coughing, difficulty breathing, or seems unwell after swimming, contact your vet for advice.

๐Ÿพ A little preparation goes a long way towards making summer adventures safe and enjoyable for everyone.

๐Ÿถ Canine Infectious Hepatitis: A Serious Disease That's Preventable

Canine infectious hepatitis is a contagious viral disease caused by canine adenovirus type 1 (CAV-1). Although it's less common today thanks to routine vaccination, it can still cause severe illness in unvaccinated dogs.

The virus primarily affects the liver but can also damage the kidneys, eyes, and blood vessels. It spreads through contact with the urine, saliva, or faeces of infected dogs, and the virus can survive in the environment for extended periods.

Early signs may include:
๐Ÿพ Fever
๐Ÿพ Lethargy
๐Ÿพ Loss of appetite
๐Ÿพ Vomiting
๐Ÿพ Abdominal pain
๐Ÿพ Increased thirst

In more severe cases, dogs may develop jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), bleeding disorders, or swelling of the eyes, sometimes known as "blue eye." Sadly, the disease can be fatal, particularly in young puppies.

๐Ÿ’‰ The good news? Canine infectious hepatitis is preventable.

Vaccination provides excellent protection and is included as part of your dog's routine core vaccination programme. Puppies need an initial course of vaccinations followed by regular boosters to maintain immunity throughout their lives.

If you're unsure whether your dog's vaccinations are up to date, or you've recently welcomed a new puppy into your family, our team is here to help.

๐Ÿ“ž Contact us today to discuss your dog's vaccination schedule or to book an appointment.

โค๏ธ Keeping your dog's vaccinations current is one of the most effective ways to protect them from serious infectious diseases and help keep our canine community healthy.

๐Ÿ”๐ŸŒญ Summer BBQs Are Great Fun... But They Can Be Risky for Pets! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ

With BBQ season in full swing, it's worth remembering that many of our favourite summer treats can be dangerous for our four-legged friends.

๐Ÿšซ Foods and items to keep well out of reach include:

๐ŸŒฝ Corn cobs โ€“ Even if all the corn has been eaten, the cob can cause a serious blockage in your dog's stomach or intestines and may require emergency surgery.

๐Ÿข Skewers โ€“ Wooden or metal skewers can splinter or puncture the mouth, throat, stomach, or intestines if swallowed.

๐Ÿง… Onions โ€“ Whether raw, cooked, fried, or powdered, onions are toxic to dogs and cats and can damage their red blood cells, leading to anaemia.

๐Ÿ‡ Grapes and raisins โ€“ Even small amounts can cause kidney failure in some dogs, although we don't fully understand why.

๐Ÿบ Alcohol โ€“ Pets are much more sensitive to alcohol than people. Even small amounts can cause vomiting, breathing difficulties, seizures, and, in severe cases, can be life-threatening.

๐Ÿซ Chocolate โ€“ Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are especially dangerous.

๐Ÿฆด Cooked bones โ€“ Unlike raw bones, cooked bones can splinter easily, causing choking, mouth injuries, or damage to the digestive tract.

โœ… Top BBQ safety tips:
โ€ข Keep food and drinks out of your pet's reach.
โ€ข Ask guests not to feed pets from the table.
โ€ข Secure rubbish bags and food wasteโ€”dogs are experts at finding leftovers!
โ€ข Provide your pet with their own treats or enrichment so they don't feel left out.

If you think your pet has eaten something they shouldn't, don't wait for symptoms to appear. Contact us as soon as possible for advice, as early treatment can make a real difference.

We hope you and your pets enjoy a safe, happy summer! โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿถ Canine Distemper: A Serious Disease That Vaccination Can Prevent

Canine distemper is a highly contagious viral disease that can affect dogs of all ages, but puppies and unvaccinated dogs are most at risk.

The virus can spread through coughing, sneezing, or close contact with infected dogs and wildlife. Early signs may include:
๐Ÿพ Fever
๐Ÿพ Watery eyes and nasal discharge
๐Ÿพ Coughing
๐Ÿพ Lethargy
๐Ÿพ Loss of appetite
๐Ÿพ Vomiting or diarrhoea

As the disease progresses, it can affect the nervous system, leading to tremors, seizures, muscle twitching, or paralysis. Sadly, distemper can be life-threatening, and dogs that survive may be left with lifelong health problems.

๐Ÿ’‰ The good news? Distemper is preventable.

Vaccination is the most effective way to protect your dog. Puppies need a course of vaccinations followed by regular boosters to maintain immunity. Keeping vaccinations up to date not only protects your own dog but also helps reduce the spread of disease within the wider dog community.

If you're unsure whether your dog's vaccinations are current, or if you've welcomed a new puppy into your family, our team is here to help.

๐Ÿ“ž Get in touch with us to discuss your dog's vaccination schedule or to book an appointment.

โค๏ธ Prevention is always better than cureโ€”keeping vaccinations up to date is one of the simplest and most important ways to protect your dog's health.
