Let's talk about rewards 🌟

In training it's common practice to use a food reward 🧁

Some dogs are more food motivated than others 🐕

Some dogs like sausage, but others prefer cheese 🧀

Nobody wants to work for a rubbish reward 🥕

Make sure the reward you offer is worth the effort for your dog 💦

You wouldn't work a shift for free, don't expect the same from your pooch 🐕‍🦺

STAY ✋

A stay is where we ask our dogs to remain in a position until we release them.
In my stay with Gaia here, there are a few things to note:
1. I don't recommend teaching a stay with a far away release like in the video. The reason for this is that it's much easier for your dog to break the stay. The reason I have taught this Gaia is to progress possibly to agility training.
2. I do not yell at Gaia when she makes a mistake, we just start the process again!
3. Stays are boring and difficult, we train stays in short sessions.
4. Gaia is not a food motivated dog. Her reward of choice will always be toy over treat! Find what works for your dog and use that to your advantage.

So the 3 Ds here are:
Distance, how far away we are from one another.
Distraction, running away from Gaia and becoming Billy Elliot are the main distractions, but we are outdoor here so we could class passers by, wind blowing leaves, and noise of all the goings on around as distractions too.
Duration, all though I clipped the video in parts, this was all one attempt. In total I waited 30 seconds (then a dance) before I released Gaia from her stay.

🛑 Remember to start small! If your dog can't do a 5 second stay indoors you can't expect them to do a 30 second stay outdoors. Build your behaviours and set your dog up for success!

FLIRT POLE Why do I love this tool so much, as a working dog owner and as a dog trainer? The flirt pole is such a valuable tool. It works a dog's body and mind, allows them to exhibit prey drive and breed specific behaviour in a controlled and safe environment and allows a safe opportunity to practice impulse control and step up those stays! Flirt poles are inexpensive and available on Amazon for next day delivery! The one in this video is a heavy duty Squishy Face brand, but in reality most cheaper brands would suffice for the majority of small to large breeds. Bodie is a dog with real issues. 8 homes in his short one year of life and through this he has developed some insecurities around other dogs. Bodie's reactivity was so extreme, that a halti was recommended to prevent physical damage to the owners due to the sheer strength of his outbursts. Yet, here he is, months later, dealing with his insecurities like a pro! The hard work and dedication Bodie's owners have put into him is nothing but admirable, considering how extreme his behaviour has proven to be. But hard work is paying off. Here he is working with my wonderful elderly rottweiler, Chloe. Let's talk about the 3 Ds! DISTANCE How far we are away when we ask for a behaviour. DISTRACTION What is happening while we ask for that behaviour. DURATION How long we are asking for the behaviour to be carried out. This is myself and Gaia demonstrating a down stay using all elements of the 3 Ds. Practice like this is called PROOFING a behaviour, and is important to help make a behaviour permanent and reliable. Skipping and jumping may seem silly for us, but actually most dogs see this as an invitation to play, so for Gaia this is tip top work. Well done Gaia!
