Veterinary care doesn’t have to be scary for your cat
Whether it’s in the vet clinic or at home, we can teach our cats to participate with us in their healthcare through teaching them co-operative vet care training.
After being diagnosed with diabetes Charlie was trained by our dental vet nurse Kathy over a period of two weeks to use a mat, sit on it, have his scruff pinched, then used a tooth pick as a pretend injection and then finally injected with a needle.
Charlie associates his mat with treats and Kathy has been able to use this for other behaviours too such as having his teeth brushed, in fact Charlie often sits on his mat to see if he can get anymore treats for doing any other tricks. Who says cats aren’t as trainable as dogs?!
Vet Nurse Kathy says:
I’ll be forever grateful to our behaviour nurse Claire talking me through how to train him for injections.
I tried injecting him twice initially while he ate and he hated it and without Claire’s help his story could have gone a whole different way.
He does feel a sense of control over his injection and he works for his treats which combined makes this such a success.
He’s so sweet, I just have to say ‘it’s injection time ‘and he’ll jump onto his mat.
**Did you see our previous post on co-operative care training for dogs too?**

Veterinary care doesn’t have to be scary……and your dog will thank you for it!!
Whether it’s in the vet clinic or at home, we can teach our dogs to participate with us in their healthcare through teaching them co-operative vet care training.
Benji demonstrates with our behaviour Vet Nurse Claire how they work together to give him injections and check out his nails, ears, eyes and teeth.
Vet Nurse Claire says:
We’ve always practiced a range of behaviours enabling him to participate in his own healthcare, rather than me forcing unpleasant things upon him that could then effect his trust in me and our relationship, and this couldn’t have been more useful over the past few months.
Benji has started on monthly injections for his joints and recently had surgery to save his eye resulting in LOTS of daily eye drops….and he’s handled it all like an absolute pro 😍
Has your dog got a vet care or grooming procedure they run the other way at the sight of?
Or perhaps they love the salon and a pedicure?
Or maybe they just can’t wait to get in the clinic and see the vet team?
Let us know in the comments
**It’s not just for dogs, look out for some super cat training in our next post**

Look at little Bernard! A 12 week old miniature schnauzer. He is relaxing to our relaxation music in our dog ward. We play relaxation music to all our patients as part of our fear free approach to patient care. Here is some information about how music helps our patients:
Music played in the wards can help to sound block and counter the effects of noises and disturbances from the other animals and noises in the clinic as well as having an effect on behaviour, stress and welfare.
Classical music has been associated with dogs spending more time sitting or lying down, resting and sleeping and less time vocalising and standing.
However, different animals may have individual preferences for different genres and songs, as one study suggested soft rock and Reggae may be preferred by some dogs who as a result appear less stressed, anxious and were calmer. Some might prefer an audio book.
There are lots of studies in humans on the positive effects of music with reducing blood pressure, heart rate, anxiety levels and even pain relief- so this music also helps our staff stay calm during stressful periods.
What is your pets favourite music to chill out to? Show us your videos and let us know your tried and tested tunes so we can add these to our play list to use in our hospital environment.
Here’s to a chilled out day for all 🐱🐶🐰
✨👨🏻⚕️Welcome Back INTO the practice!! 👩🏻⚕️✨
It's the time to start getting back to *somewhat* normal!! We're so happy to have some of you guys inside to shelter from the ☔ rain ☔!
It's a perfect time to start adjusting the new system which we have going here, and there will be another post shortly breaking it all down.
As you can see we have lots of posters on our door and windows, please read these as they'll give you most of the instruction you'll need.
Before you come in with your lovely smiles, please send us a text first and we shall invite you in and allocate your position which will help keep you in the right position for your consultant! 🐾👨🏻⚕️
We hope you have adjusted with us during this time and this will be a smooth transition to filtering you guys back in safely! If you don't feel ready to come in, that's fine, please let our receptionists know and we can accommodate what is best.
Thank you for sticking by us through this past crazy year!! We are excited to trial this new way of having you guys back 🐾❤️
Noodles did so well today with having blood taken! 🐶 We are so proud of you Noodles 🎊 We used this technique of using the back leg for minimal handling, and treats as a distraction!😋 As you can see this worked really well and helped Noodles have this procedure done fear free ☺️
Fear free is something we do in practice with our handling to help better your pets experience. ❤️ As you could imagine having too much restraint can make animals feel more stressed😰 Monty demonstrates the positive impacts these no restraint methods have by sitting so well for his ear swab. We used a chin rest for this method with a treat in view. As you can see he does take a little moment at the very end, but this ear is incredibly painful!😳 So well done Monty!!😋💕 We find this technique works really well and our patients are rewarded with treats for their patience. ✨
