🐾Take your dog for a nice long walk before darkness sets in to help tire them out and give them the chance to relieve themselves
🐱Keep your cat indoors overnight from when daylight starts to fade. Ensure a litter tray is provided
🐰If possible, bring small furries such as Rabbits and Guinea Pigs indoors overnight. If this is not possible, turning their enclosure to face a wall or fence and covering with a duvet can help to minimise some of the noise and flashes. Provide extra bedding for them to burrow down into to feel safe
🪟Keep windows and curtains closed. This will help to block out the scary sounds and flashes
📠Play calming music or turn the TV volume up to drown out the noise. Some radio stations such as classic FM offer a playlist of calming music for pets on Firework night
🐾Make a cosy spot for dogs to retreat to so they feel safe. A corner behind the sofa or under the table away from the windows are some ideas. Provide them with a cosy blanket and their favourite toys. If your dog uses a crate, cover this with a blanket.
🥰Accept different behaviours! When dogs are frightened, they might bark, hide, or show other behaviours that you find challenging. It’s very important that you do not to tell them off or “correct” them, as this will likely increase their stress and anxiety levels. Be gentle and comforting! Some people say you shouldn’t comfort a frightened dog, but that’s a myth! If your dog wants to be comforted by you, then do so. Alternatively, if they prefer to seek out a place they don’t usually go, like your bedroom, let them stay there until they feel safe.
🐶Use of enrichment toys such as a stuffed kong toy or Licki-Matt will help by causing a distraction. Licking can be a positive behaviour for dogs and encourages calmness and reduces anxiety levels.
🐾Consider using calming products such as Pet Remedy, Adaptil or Feliway. These can be bought as plug in diffusers, sprays or collars. The
