If you had to describe us in just three words… what would they be? 💬

We always love hearing your feedback, whether it’s about the care we provide, how we make you (and your pets!) feel, or your experience with our team.

So, if you had to sum us up in three words, what would you choose? Pop them in the comments below, we’d love to know!

We love a good “day in the life” post, but what about your pet’s version?

Is it something like…

🐾 Wake the humans up (even though it’s definitely not breakfast time)

🐾 Act like they haven’t been fed in a week (despite eating an hour ago)

🐾 Patrol the house for suspicious activity… like the postman

🐾 Listen out for that sound of the lead or collar… could it be time for a W-A-L-K?

Every pet’s routine is a little different and always entertaining!

Share your version of “a day in the life” from your pet’s perspective. We’d love to hear it! 📸🐶🐱

Today, we’d like to introduce you to our Head RVN, Gemma! 🥳

Here’s what she has to say about working at AVC:

“I qualified as a Registered Veterinary Nurse in 2019; I have been working at AVC since 2024. Before joining AVC, I worked in a range of first opinion roles where I enjoyed utilising my skills. I have been a clinical coach since 2022, and have been privileged enough to mentor several student veterinary nurses so far in my career.

I have a keen interest in anaesthesia, and I’m currently working towards my NCert. I also love supporting our patients with confidence visits and weight clinics!

Outside of work, you’ll usually find me at the gym, walking my handsome pooch, Otis, or spoiling my niece & nephew!”

Say hi to Gemma in the comments! 👋🐾

Did you know that dental disease affects 85% of cats and dogs over the age of two? 🤔

Be aware of signs, such as:

👉 Dental pain – pawing at the mouth, reluctance to eat

👉 Gingivitis – Red and inflamed gingiva

👉 Tooth loss

At check-up appointments, our vets assess a pet’s dental health as part of their routine examination; they will discuss measures for keeping your pet’s mouth in good health.

When tartar builds up, it threatens to become a problem for your pet, so our vets might recommend a scale and polish under anaesthesia. This ‘resets’ the mouth back to a good, clean state from which home care, such as brushing and dental diets, will become effective again.

Dental procedures are very common, and our vets are skilled in cleaning and removing teeth as necessary. We have power dentistry tools just as you’d expect to see in human dentistry, which allow us to work accurately and efficiently to keep anaesthesia time to a minimum, and our trained and skilled nurses monitor patients very closely.

If you notice a hedgehog in your garden at this time of year, pause and take a closer look. Many will already be hibernating, so those you do spot could need a little extra help.

What to do:

🦔 Check their size: small hedgehogs may not have enough fat reserves to survive hibernation.

🦔 Look for signs of illness or injury.

🦔 Contact a local hedgehog rescue for advice.

A simple act of kindness could make all the difference this winter.

Be honest... how many photos of your pet are on your phone right now? 📱🐾

Hundreds? Thousands? Just enough to fill a gallery (or three)?

We completely understand! When you love animals as much as we do, it’s impossible not to keep taking photos!

Long-term diseases such as arthritis, heart disease and chronic kidney disease commonly affect our pets, especially as they age.

These chronic conditions, sadly, cannot be cured. Instead, they need to be managed for the rest of your pet’s life. However, when managed well, we can ensure our pets have the best quality of life for the longest time possible.

Good veterinary care is an essential part of keeping your pet comfortable.

This may involve regular veterinary visits to assess your pet’s condition, routine blood tests or scans to monitor disease progression, and ongoing treatment, which may need to be altered as your pet’s condition changes.

Today is a reminder that pets need more than food, walks and a cosy bed.

Enrichment helps them express natural behaviours, learn new things, and feel more in control of their environment, which are all essential for good welfare.

Whether it’s a puzzle feeder for your cat, a scent trail in the garden, or foraging toys for your small furries, it all makes a difference. 😺🐶🐰

Most dogs love a good walk, whatever the season, but just like us, they can sometimes feel the chill. Here are some signs your dog might be too cold:

🐕 Shivering or trembling

🐕 Curling up tightly or lifting paws off the ground

🐕 Slowing down on walks or trying to head back home

🐕 Whining, seeking warmth or clinging to you

🐕 Ears or body cold to the touch

If you notice these signs, it’s time to end the walk and warm them up.

Every dog is different, so it’s important to notice that smaller breeds, older pets, and those with thin coats may need extra protection in winter, such as warm clothes.

Leptospirosis is a serious bacterial disease that causes kidney and liver damage and can be fatal, even with intensive veterinary treatment. It is mainly spread via rats’ urine.

It is also zoonotic, so people can get leptospirosis, though infection in people is rare.

Dogs are most at risk of developing the disease if they walk on farmland, go swimming or have contact with rats or their urine. However, it can be difficult to eliminate the risk of leptospirosis, as infection can even potentially occur in your garden due to the movement of rats.

Fortunately, dogs can be protected against leptospirosis by keeping up to date with their vaccinations. So, if your dog is due their vaccinations, speak to us so we can get them booked in. 📲
