Winter foot care πŸΎβ„οΈ

Much like in the summer when your dog paws are at risk of damage walking on hot pavements, the same can be said for the winter. Dogs can suffer from cracked pads just as we can suffer from cracked feet during the winter months.

If your dog has furry feet, trim the hair that grows between his pads to prevent ice buildup between the pads.

Winter salt on the road can also be toxic to dogs, if ingested, so if you walk on any major roads where they could have salt spread, we recommend rinsing or wiping your dog’s paws after walking to remove any residue.

If your dog shows signs of discomfort when walking outside on frozen or salted surfaces, consider using dog booties to protect his paws.

πŸ’₯ Fireworks πŸ’₯ - what can I do to reduce the stress for my pet?

Fireworks can be distressing for some pets when they have noise phobia. We are here to help! Here are some things you can do to reduce the stress and prepare for the fireworks season:

- Create a den: try and soundproof it with a duvet. It can become a safe place for your pet to go to when they are stressed. Allow them to acclimatise now before the fireworks start.

- Noise phobia sound therapy: This gradually introduces your pet to loud noises so they become more familiar with them and find them less stressful. See the Dogs Trust website and download the scary sounds booklet for FREE
https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/dog-advice/understanding-your-dog/sound-therapy-for-pets
This will be very useful to desensitise your pet for next years fireworks but unfortunately won't be overly helpful for this year.

- Medication: some pets need medication to help reduce their anxiety during this season. You will need an appointment with the vet to discuss your individual case and we can recommend the best course of action.

'Twas the night before Christmas, all through Yatton Vets
Not a creature was stirring, not even the pets.

The stockings were hung in reception with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

Tigger the kitten, looking splendid in red
Turned to his humans, and meowfully said:

β€œTo animals everywhere, let us unite:
Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night.”

Merry Christmas everyone πŸŽ„
