On World Chocolate Day, it's sensible to keep in mind that chocolate is poisonous to our canine friends. Try to keep chocolate out of reach of your dog, but if an accident does happen, these are the symptoms you should keep an eye out for.
The poison itself takes between 4 and 24 hours to cause signs which
include:
🍫 Muscle stiffness
🍫 Tremors
🍫 Vomiting
🍫 Heart arrhythmias and fitting
If you see your dog has eaten chocolate or spot any of these
symptoms, call your vet immediately.

Some pets love to smother us with wet-nosed (or wet-tongued!) kisses, while others prefer to show us their love from a respectful distance. Always let your pet decide how they show affection, and respect their boundaries if they’re uncomfortable.
Will you get kisses or hisses this International Kissing Day? 💋

👁️🐶 Early detection makes all the difference when it comes to your pet’s eye health — and we’re passionate about helping catch problems before they become painful or costly.

We’re incredibly proud that our clinic was one of 22 practices across the region highly commended in the RCVS Knowledge Awards for improving the way we examine, diagnose, and treat eye conditions in pets.

Eye issues like ulcers, dry eye, and glaucoma are more common than many realise — especially in dogs — and catching them early can save your pet discomfort and save you money in the long run 💙 That’s why we’ve been working hard to adopt a more tailored and thorough approach to eye care, using the most appropriate techniques for each case, rather than a one-size-fits-all model.

🐾 And a special shoutout to our wonderful vet Rita, who has gone above and beyond in this area. She’s just sat her final exams for her Certificate in Ophthalmology after months of additional study — we’re so proud of her dedication to helping pets see clearly and live more comfortably!

If you ever notice squinting, redness, discharge, or any changes in your pet’s eyes — don’t wait. We’re here to help with compassionate, expert care 🩺✨

☀️ 🌡️Hot Weather Warning – Keep Pets Safe! 🌡️☀️

In this heat, pavements can become dangerously hot for our pets. Always test the ground with the back of your hand for 5 seconds—if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws! Walk pets early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler. 🐾

Cats and small animals are also at risk. Please keep them indoors during the hottest parts of the day, out of direct sunlight, with access to fresh water and plenty of airflow, create a cool, shaded space to help them stay comfortable.

Heatstroke can develop quickly—let’s keep all our animals cool, safe, and happy this summer. ☀️💧❄️

‼️Urgent Warning: A government warning has been issued after a toxic insecticide was found in counterfeit flea treatments, which have made some cats seriously ill.

This does not affect your pet if you get your flea/worming medication from our practice. Please be extra cautious when sourcing pet medications outside our veterinary practice.

If buying medication for your pet online, ensure the seller is registered with the VMD (Veterinary Medicines Directorate). You can check this using the VMD’s Register of Online Retailers - https://vmd.defra.gov.uk/register/online-retailers

Please get in touch straight away if you have any concerns about your pet by calling 0117 932 3660

Please read the full article in the link below which includes advice on how to spot fake animal medicines online.

Providing the correct nutrition for your rabbit can prevent a lot of common health problems 🐰

A rabbit’s diet should be predominantly fibre, as they need to chew almost
continuously – their teeth grow throughout their lives and chewing helps prevent them overgrowing.

Rabbits need annual vaccinations, just like cats and dogs. 🐰

Vaccinations protect against Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD), both of which can be fatal.

It is recommended to neuter all rabbits. Male-female pairs require neutering to prevent breeding, but same-sex pairs can fight if not neutered. Female rabbits also have an 80% chance of developing cancer of the uterus during their lifetime, which is eliminated by neutering.

Rabbits are social creatures and should be kept in pairs or larger groups. 🐰

Introducing adult rabbits can lead to potentially lethal fighting; don't be tempted to get one rabbit and add a friend later.

Once two or more rabbits are bonded, they should remain together, including for vet trips. It is no longer recommended to keep rabbits and guinea pigs together as it is very difficult to meet both animals’ needs.
