The meeting will also cover a review of sheep fertility and techniques to improve reproductive performance.

🐑 𝗟𝗔𝗠𝗕𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗦𝗘 -𝗪𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝟳𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 🐑

On Wednesday 7th February we will be hosting our lambing course. The course will begin at 11 o’clock, including both a theory and a practical session. 🐏

The course is aimed at all levels of experience, covering the following;
🐑 management of ewe pre and post lambing
🐑care of the lamb
🐑 potential lambing complications
🐑 hands on lambing practical

⚠️ 𝙎𝘾𝙃𝙈𝘼𝙇𝙇𝙀𝙉𝘽𝙀𝙍𝙂 𝙑𝙄𝙍𝙐𝙎⚠️

Over the last couple of weeks we have seen a number cases of Schmallenberg in lambs.

Schmallenberg virus causes abortion and stillbirths with foetal abnormalities, mainly affecting sheep, cattle and goats.

Schmallenberg virus is spread by a certain species of midge 🪰

The most classical malformations of Schmallenberg virus are;
- bent limbs and fixed joints
- twisted neck or spine
-short lower jaw
- domed head

Unfortunately once an animal has contracted the virus there is no cure. There is also no commercially available vaccine.

If you suspect a case of Schmallenberg on your farm and would like confirmation, APHA are currently funding testing of the virus. Please get in touch with us if you would like anymore information about Schmallenberg or how to go about testing.

So when Ed isn’t vetting he can quite often be found in a show ring, this time judging Kerry Hills. 🐑

Shows give farmers an opportunity to bring out their best stock to compete against others in an attempt to win prizes. Here Ed can be seen with his champion and reserve champion animals, congratulations to all concerned 🏆 .

Our calf vet tech services include:
🐮blood sampling calves to ensure they’ve got sufficient antibodies from their mums

Next up is Emily on one of her routine fertility visits this morning!
Many of our vets have routine fertility visits where we pregnancy scan, check cows after calving, and help others struggling to get in calf! On the screen you can see a positive pregnancy scan! 🐄

Liv has just been busy in the lab processing samples and then diagnosing lungworm.

We are at the time of year where both gutworms and lungworm are a big problem for our farmers. 🪱 Parasites have a major impact on growth rates and production and therefore monitoring for them is advisable.

Drop your cow/sheep faecal samples in to the practice (in a sealed container) for us to run in house.

Here’s Yannick on one of his morning foot trimming routines!

Lameness in cattle has both animal welfare implications but can also result major production loses. Our foot trimmer visits farms routinely to ensure optimum feet health, but will also do visits for those problems cows.

🐑 𝗥𝗔𝗠 𝗩𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗠𝗬 𝗗𝗔𝗬𝗦 🐑

With summer now in full swing it won’t be long before we start thinking about tupping time again. We are holding two teaser days at the surgery. You will be able to bring your rams in to be vasectomised at a discounted rate of £65 + VAT.
The dates are
- Monday 26th June
- Friday 14th July

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗔 𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗥?
A ‘teaser’ is a ram that has been vasectomised, meaning he still produces all the hormones of an entire ram but he can’t impregnate the ewes.

𝗪𝗛𝗬 𝗨𝗦𝗘 𝗔 𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗥?
A teaser will naturally synchronise the ewes ready for your entire, fertile rams to be introduced. If a teaser ram is used correctly they should
- bring the breeding season forward by 2-3 weeks
- tighten up your lambing period

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗔𝗟 𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗥 𝗖𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘?
- a fit and healthy ram
- good legs, feet and teeth
- ideally a different breed from your breeding ram (makes identification much easier)

𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗧𝗢 𝗨𝗦𝗘 𝗔 𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗥?
- ewes to be kept away from any rams (teasers included) for a minimum of 28 days (ideally 6 weeks) then introduced to a teaser ram for 2 weeks. The teaser is then removed and an entire ram introduced.
- ideally use teasers at a ratio of 1:50 (1:100 maximum), then introduce to your rams at a ratio of 1:20 or 1:30.

𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗡 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗩𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗠𝗬 𝗗𝗢𝗡𝗘?
A vasectomy should be done 6-8 weeks before being introduced to the ewes. During this time he may still be partially fertile and therefore should be kept away from any breeding ewes.

Earlier this week the team had training on using our new worm egg counting machine! The machine enables more accurate worm and cocci diagnosis, something we are excited about 🪱

We are getting to the time of year where we need to be thinking about worming our cattle and sheep. Targeted treatment is always best so please make sure to drop us in poo sample (in a sealed container/glove) before you reach for that wormer!

It’s always a good evening when we get our farmers together to discuss herd health! We look forward to hosting more

What a fantastic meeting Tibbs & Simmons Farm Vets held for all HerdWise customers🤩

Ed Simmons hosted the meeting to 32 farmers with the help of NMR's aggregate data which allowed Ed to benchmark his herds against one another🐮

We also provided latest test results, priority cull report, progress tracker report and herd summary details - All from Herd Companion.

Ed told us "The meeting was great, really good feedback. I'm keen to get the non HerdWise meeting set up for the end of May."🎤

Yesterday evening we held a farmer’s meeting discussing all things parasites 🪱 Despite the snow it was great to see such a good turnout with a very engaged audience!
We would like to thank Rebecca from Norbrook laboratories for coming and talking.

On Wednesday 8th March we will be hosting an evening talk and discussion on preparing your cattle for turnout, for both beef and dairy farmers. The talk will cover vaccines that can be used and a variety of parasite controls, focusing on gutworms, lungworm and flies.

The talk will take place at the practice starting at 7pm with hot food provided.

On Tuesday 28th February Farmsense will be hosting a discussion evening at Sedgemoor Auction Centre, where our own vet Heather will be a guest speaker. The evening will focus on management of ewes pre and post lambing, lamb health and common issues faced in the lambing shed.
