Our office will be closed until Wednesday 27th December but as always a vet will be available for any emergencies!
Best wishes from us all at Tibbs and Simmons for a healthy and prosperous 2024 ๐
What's this? ๐๐๐
The rumen microbiome/'flora' under the microscope!
The rumen is full of bacteria, protozoa, yeasts and other oraganisms. These help digest the food ruminants eat, allowing food to be absorbed by the animal.
When feeding the ruminant, its all about feeding the rumen and keeping it healthy.
This sample was collected by Sophie who performed ruminocentesis as part of an acidosis work up. She then looked at it under the microscope to assess the degree of acidosis.
The size of this one!!
Clare's been kept busy on call, performing a c-section for an upside down backwards calf that was definitely not fitting out of the back door!

*The calf is dragged like this to ensure it is out of range should the mother decide to spin. If it was not removed from the kick/swing zone the mother could stand on the calf, causing serious injury.
...lungworm!
Lungworm is a parasite infecting cattle over the summer and autumn months, weather dependant. It causes weight loss and coughing, advancing to respiratory distress and death!
Animals become immune with exposure, so it generally affects youngstock in their first grazing season however, it can affect adults if they didn't meet it when younger or the infection pressure is high.
We check for lungworm via faecal samples.
