๐Ÿ“ฃ AVIAN INFLUENZA UPDATE ๐Ÿ“

As of Saturday 25th January the whole of England were placed into an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ), meaning bird owners will need to comply with enhanced biosecurity measures to reduce the risk of further outbreaks of disease. The enhanced biosecurity measures are outlined in the attached photo.

This update was introduced due to the escalating numbers of cases of influenza and increased risk levels in wild birds. All bird owners are urged to remain alert for any signs of disease and report suspected disease to the APHA. Signs of avian influenza include;

On ๐™ˆ๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™™๐™–๐™ฎ 19๐™ฉ๐™ ๐˜ผ๐™ช๐™œ๐™ช๐™จ๐™ฉ we will be carrying out a teaser day at the practice, costing ยฃ65.00 excluding VAT per teaser.

A โ€˜teaserโ€™ is a ram that has been vasectomised, meaning he still produces all the hormones of an entire ram but he canโ€™t impregnate the ewes.

A teaser will naturally synchronise the ewes ready for your entire, fertile rams to be introduced. If a teaser ram is used correctly they should
- bring the breeding season forward by 2-3 weeks
- tighten up your lambing period

- a fit and healthy ram
- good legs, feet and teeth
- ideally a different breed from your breeding ram (makes identification much easier)

- ewes to be kept away from any rams (teasers included) for a minimum of 28 days (ideally 6 weeks) then introduced to a teaser ram for 2 weeks. The teaser is then removed and an entire ram introduced.
- ideally use teasers at a ratio of 1:50 (1:100 maximum), then introduce to your rams at a ratio of 1:20 or 1:30.

A vasectomy should be done 6-8 weeks before being introduced to the ewes. During this time he may still be partially fertile and therefore should be kept away from any breeding ewes.

If you would like to book a slot, or ask any questions please give us a ring on 01934 862808
