🐑𝗦𝗛𝗘𝗘𝗣 𝗟𝗔𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗦 𝗠𝗘𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 🐑

On Wednesday 13th November we will be hosting a sheep lameness meeting at the practice. The talk will include the sheep lameness 5 point plan; covering prevention, treatment and vaccination of footrot (Footvax).

The presentation will also cover quarantine treatments and protocols of new sheep onto the farm, so we are able to introduce new sheep into the flock without spreading diseases.

The talk is kindly sponsored by MSD and food will be provided. Please aim to arrive from 7 onwards, with the talk starting at 7:30.

On Thursday 7th November we will holding a selekt pump servicing day at the practice!

Please bring your pumps into the practice before this date, or give them to a vet when they’re on farm. Please label your pumps with the farm name to ensure you get the right one back!

🐑RAM MOT DAY - Wednesday 28th August🐑

With ram sales now upon us, we should be mindful of checking our stock tups for fertility.

On Wednesday 28th August we will be holding an MOT day at the practice where we will be giving the rams a full health check and testing their semen.

🐑𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗥 𝗗𝗔𝗬🐑

On 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙮 19𝙩𝙝 𝘼𝙪𝙜𝙪𝙨𝙩 we will be carrying out a teaser day at the practice, costing £65.00 excluding VAT per teaser.

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗔 𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗥?
A ‘teaser’ is a ram that has been vasectomised, meaning he still produces all the hormones of an entire ram but he can’t impregnate the ewes.

𝗪𝗛𝗬 𝗨𝗦𝗘 𝗔 𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗥?
A teaser will naturally synchronise the ewes ready for your entire, fertile rams to be introduced. If a teaser ram is used correctly they should
- bring the breeding season forward by 2-3 weeks
- tighten up your lambing period

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗜𝗗𝗘𝗔𝗟 𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗥 𝗖𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘?
- a fit and healthy ram
- good legs, feet and teeth
- ideally a different breed from your breeding ram (makes identification much easier)

𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗧𝗢 𝗨𝗦𝗘 𝗔 𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗥?
- ewes to be kept away from any rams (teasers included) for a minimum of 28 days (ideally 6 weeks) then introduced to a teaser ram for 2 weeks. The teaser is then removed and an entire ram introduced.
- ideally use teasers at a ratio of 1:50 (1:100 maximum), then introduce to your rams at a ratio of 1:20 or 1:30.

𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗡 𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗗 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗛𝗔𝗩𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗩𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗠𝗬 𝗗𝗢𝗡𝗘?
A vasectomy should be done 6-8 weeks before being introduced to the ewes. During this time he may still be partially fertile and therefore should be kept away from any breeding ewes.

Here’s Liv on one her morning routines!

Routine fertility visits are a carried out on a lot of our dairy farms in order to maximise production. During the visit we scan cows for pregnancy, help to get cows in calf and check cows post calving 🐄

Out in the lab vet Naomi is busy processing a lungworm sample! 🔬

We offer a range of in house laboratory testing including gut worms, lungworm and liver fluke! Parasites can have major impacts on growth rates and production therefore faecal egg counts are advisable. 🪱

Drop in your poo samples (in a sealed container) to the office and receive your results the same day

This morning our TB tester Harvey was out on farm! 🐄

Most of our farms are on a 6 monthly tb testing interval! The test requires animals to be injected with avian and bovine tb on day 1, then any reactions measure 72 hours later.

We are really pleased to say that the donations from our party last month raised £1800. Ed presented the cheque to Somerset FCN - Farming Community Network tonight at their social gathering. Many thanks to all who donated to this great cause.
