🐈 The ideal weight isn’t the same for every cat because each one is an individual and it depends on their age and breed. A scale, known as a body condition score or BCS, is often used by veterinary clinic staff, and you can use it at home too. Take a look at our slightly simplified version below.

For those of you that met the fabulous Moo & Ted they have finally gone home 🥰💖😿
They were at Meadows Cattery for 5 months, they were such characters and literally became part of the furniture.
I will miss having them around, but glad they are back home with their owners 💖🥰

Today is the day we celebrate these beautiful felines! Here's some interesting facts about tortoiseshell cats:

🐱Nearly all tortoiseshell cats are female. This is because female cats carry two X chromosomes (males carry one X and one Y) and these chromosomes carry genetic information about orange and black coat colour.

🐱Tortoiseshell kittens inherit an orange coat gene from one parent, and a black one from the other and are born with interesting patches of each colour which make up their unique coat. A male kitten on the other hand has only one X chromosome, so would be either a black or orange in coat colour.

🐱For this reason, male tortoiseshell cats are extremely rare. They are usually sterile as they have XXY chromosomes, similar to humans with Klinefelter syndrome. As result male tortoiseshell cats are prone to health issues.

📝One 2016 study showed that sex-linked orange female cats (tortoiseshell, calico and torbies) were more frequently aggressive towards humans. However....... We should be mindful not to label cats as this can create a negative bias towards them and affect how we interact with them in both a home and veterinary environment.

🍀Tortoiseshell cats are also considered lucky in many countries

Personally, I think tortoiseshell cats are beautiful 😻

Some advice on how to give cat medication.

It’s always a struggle and cats are not always the easiest of patients. At Meadows Cattery I try and find a friendlier way of giving medication so it’s less stressful for the cat being man handled by a stranger and have medication forced in their mouth.

I have a lot of knowledge of the different medications and experience of giving to a variety of cats after working in rescue for many years.

It is important to always ask your vet if your cats medication is ok to give with a treat and if it can be crushed if it’s a tablet.

Also ask your vet if the medication comes in a different form, tablets can also come in liquid and injectable form which are usually more expensive (fine if you have insurance) but it does take the stress out of the ordeal for both you and the cat.

Party Season is upon us, with many busy events crammed in over only a few weeks. Being busy socialites, it’s easy to forget our furry friends. Coming up is Fireworks Night and while we all have a *blast*. It is a tradition that causes anxiety for our pets. On this night there are lots of ways we can protect our pets and keep them safe:
* It's important to ensure your cats are chipped in case they are spooked and get lost or hurt.
* Try and keep your cats indoors during the evenings where fireworks are likely to happen.
* Close the curtains to block out the lights.
* Put on calm, reassuring music to block out the bangs.
* Stay at home and keep them company.
* Use Calming Sprays such as Pet Remedy.

Pet Remedy
Calming sprays and plugins, such as Pet Remedy are a good way of helping your cat relax and reducing their stress levels. Pet Remedy is valerian-based with other essential oils that help to stop their nerves from being overstimulated, meaning their anxiety levels are lowered and they’re overall calmer.
