⚠️ Antifreeze poisoning in cats ⚠️

With temperatures set to be getting quite low in the coming days, here's a reminder about the dangers of using antifreeze 🥶❄️

❗️ Antifreeze is toxic to pets, and extremely so to cats

❗️ Even the smallest amount can cause kidney failure and death in cats

❗️ Unfortunately cats can be attracted to antifreeze due to its sweet taste

❌ Keep antifreeze in clearly labelled, robust, sealed containers, away from pets

⚠️ Clean up spills immediately, no matter how small

🚗 Try and find an alternative method for preventing or defrosting frozen windscreens

See below for more information, and for advice about signs of antifreeze poisoning in cats and what to do if you notice them👇

Extension to Avian Influenza Prevention Zone 🐔

From midday on the 25th January (England and Scotland), it became a legal requirement for all bird keepers to follow strict biosecurity measures to help protect their flocks from the threat of avian flu.

Aviary birds, birds of prey, chickens and pet wildfowl can still be seen as patients but additional precautions will apply during Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) measures.

Please call us for advice and instructions before bringing pet birds to the practice 📞

If you find an unwell wild bird, please visit the RSPCA website for advice on the best approach: https://www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/wildlife/birds/injured

Please avoid bringing unwell wild birds to the practice or to rescue centres ⚠️

Dental hygiene 🪥

Just like humans, pets can experience a range of dental problems, which can lead to more serious health complications if left untreated 🦷

Many pets will not tolerate it if teeth brushing is not introduced slowly and gently. It may take a month or two to reach a point of “proper brushing” – this is normal and nothing to worry about 🐾

Our nurses can provide you with further advice on maintaining your pets' dental hygiene. Ask the nurse for some tips at your next nurse clinic 👩‍⚕️

Recheck appointments - why are they important? 🐾

The most common reason for your vet recommending a recheck appointment for your pet is to determine whether their condition is actually better ❤️‍🩹

For a lot of conditions, it can be difficult to tell whether your pet has improved, without bringing them back for a recheck. For example:

🩺 An eye ulcer that needs special stain applying

🩺 An ear infection that requires examination with an otoscope or cytology performing

🩺 A urinary tract infection that needs urine testing to check for blood or bacteria.

If we are unable to pick up on the occasions where your pet's condition has not resolved, the consequences of which can unfortunately include: ongoing pain or discomfort, increased cost overall, and sometimes even permanent damage to the affected body parts.

For more information on why rechecks are important, see below 👇

Blue Monday 💙

Blue Monday typically falls on the third Monday of January and is often considered the “saddest day of the year”.

Fortunately, our pets are great at cheering us up! Here’s how they can help raise your spirits this January: 🥳

😊Studies show that interacting with pets—like stroking their fur or playing with them— releases oxytocin (the "feel-good" hormone) and lowers cortisol levels (the stress hormone).

😊Walking a dog or playing with a cat keeps you active, which boosts endorphins and helps combat sadness or depression.

😊Pets are very intuitive, meaning they can sense when you are feeling down.

😊Their comforting presence alone can be enough to soothe any feelings of stress, anxiety or sadness.

How do your pets help you beat the January blues? Share your stories and photos in the comments! 🐶🐱

Animal safety ❤️

The safety of your pets is our number one priority.

To help us keep your pets safe, we ask that:

🐱All cats are brought to our practice in a suitable carrier.

🐶All dogs are kept on a lead whilst in the car park, as well as the waiting room.

If you need any assistance to meet these requirements, please let us know so that we may help. We may have spare carriers, as well as leads, that you can use if you haven't got one with you on the day.

Recognising obesity in pets 🐾

As many of us embark on New Year’s resolution diet and fitness regimes, lots of our pets would benefit from accompanying us!

It is estimated that up to 65% of dogs and 50% of cats in the UK are obese 🐾

Being overweight leaves pets at greater risk of conditions like diabetes, cancer, heart disease and arthritis, and studies have shown that it can dramatically reduce their overall life expectancy.

If your pet is overweight, the path to weight loss and a healthy happy pet doesn't always seem clear. Losing weight can be a challenging and lengthy process, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or confused by conflicting advice. But we are here to help! 💚

Our veterinary nurses can help formulate a personalised plan for your pet, set achievable goals and help you with any setbacks. Give us a call on 01179519048 to book your first weight clinic appointment 📞

Walk Your Dog Month 🐶🚶

Going for regular walks improves the physical and mental health of our dogs, as well as us 😊

January marks the beginning of Walk Your Dog Month, designed to encourage us to be more active and ensure our dogs get a good amount of exercise 💪

It will come as no surprise that there are many benefits to regular dog walks:

🐾Physical Health: Prevents obesity and keeps dogs fit!

🐾Mental Stimulation: Outdoor walks provide sensory enrichment through smells, sights, and sounds.

🐾Behaviour Improvement: Exercise can reduce boredom, destructive behaviour and anxiety.

🐾Bonding: Strengthens the relationship between owners and their pets.

Have you enjoyed many winter walks this season? ️❄️

Christmas Decor Dangers 🎄🎁

There are lots of new things in the house at Christmas for our pets to investigate; decorations, wrapping paper, new toys and lots of boxes to play in 🐾

Unfortunately, some things around the house can pose more risk than others, for example:

🪴 Plants - poinsettias, holly, ivy, mistletoe and lilies can be toxic to pets

🎄Decorations - tinsel can be particularly problematic to our pets if ingested, and baubles that could shatter should be avoided

🔋Batteries and electric cables - particularly dangerous if swallowed or chewed

Visit our website below for more information on what to be mindful of during the festive period 👇
