Help you and your new buddy out, make sure you’re a good ol’ likely chummy match to become THE best of friends 💕

I know, sounds so obvious, but picking the right breed or type of dog to join your family is sooooo important 🐶

So many things to consider, your lifestyle? Your routine? Your needs? And of course, what you can offer your new lil pal 🐾

Now for me - a Boxer?? 🤔🫣

What, the energetic class clown 🤡 , who takes forever to ‘grow up’ 👶 , generally crazy 🌪️ , who loves to be with you 👋 , and gives the best cuddles going 🤗 , particularly because they do not understand personal space 😬 ??

‼️YES PLEASE ‼️

Suits my very active loving life for sure. 😍

Now, this REALLY isn’t for everyone…

Make sure that darling hound ticks your lifestyle boxes ✅

A happy hound is a happy (FULL of love) home. ❤️🏡

Here’s Doris the Boxer with her (BIG) sister Delilah the horse! 💕
I was soooo careful to introduce these two darlings….
I was so conscious to go at Doris’ pace, keeping a good ol’ distance at first and taking it really slow. What’s the rush? 🐌
Not just to stop good old sista quarrels (you hear me siblings!) 💁‍♀️
but also to avoid over-phasing Doris, or for her to learn any unwanted habits, it’s never worth the risk. 🚫
I just wanted to encourage her in a positive way for good old ✨ bonds ✨ all round.
And look at these angels now- they are faaaabulous together. 👼
I am a very lucky girl to have this sistaaa crew 👯‍♀️🥰

We don’t learn good behaviours through fear. We simply learn how to avoid consequences and to appease.

Fear in our dogs is not always taken seriously, with so many videos floating round social media that get a few laughs.

We wouldn’t laugh if a child cowered in fear. We would take action, show concern and the same should go for our dogs.

We have the power to motivate, provide clarity and guide. We should never waste that on scare tactics or intimidation.

🕷🕷Halloween🕷🕷

🕷With halloween fast approaching please consider thinking how your puppy may feel when faced with different decorations appearing in your home or family members that may be heading out for trick or treating wearing very different items, such as masks, hats and capes.

🕷Remember - if children or family members do decide to dress up for halloween it is likely that your puppy may not have seen these before and they may be unsure. As this real Puppy School photo of a child which attended a Puppy School class demonstrates clearly is that children do look very different when disguised in halloween dress!

🕷Try to introduce items gradually and create a positive association by using treats and or a fun game with your puppy.

🕷Always watch your puppies body language and create a bigger distance away if they are unsure. Do not force them to move closer if they are scared.

🕷Keep a look out as we will be sharing some more tips on how to help keep your pups safe this Halloween over the next few days.

I've been putting off writing this post for a long time, as it makes it all very final! I'm currently completing my final Puppy School and other courses before handing over the Puppy School Bristol reins to Lydia during October. I've loved my time teaching Puppy School in Bristol, and have seen well over 1,000 puppies through classes and many more through private training sessions. I'll be continuing with private training sessions into November and then, hopefully, we will be moving to North Wales to start a new adventure. It will be an adventure some of you might be interested in visiting, and could involve dogs, so once the move is complete I'll be sharing the details here too. Please keep following to find out more!
In the meantime please contact Lydia at [email protected] for details of upcoming classes (Puppy School, Hoopers, Puppy Playtime) in Kingswood and Patchway areas 😊

Is a puppy joining your household soon? If so, you could be part of our pioneering study called Generation Pup. By completing surveys about your puppy as it grows up, our researchers can find out what influences the health and behaviour of all types of dogs. Even if you haven’t got your puppy yet, you can sign up now and be ready to get started when your new four-legged friend joins your household. Find out more at https://bit.ly/3v0xIK5

Generation Pup is now 6,000 puppies strong!!! But we still need your help to hit our target of 10,000 dogs. If you have a puppy under 16 weeks of age (or under 21 weeks if they have been through quarantine), why not sign up and help us better understand the health, behaviour and welfare of dogs in a pioneering citizen science study. ☀️ HOT WEATHER ALERT - DANGERS OF WATER☀️
A hot weather alert has been issued in the UK for the next few days and Europe is already in the grip of a heatwave. As well as taking care of ourselves and others, we also need to protect our pets. As well as heat stroke, there is a risk of water intoxication from drinking a large volume of water in a short period of time and salt poisoning from drinking too much seawater. The VPIS has received a number of enquiries recently about dogs with these conditions.
Salt poisoning can result in vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, drinking excessively, and in severe cases convulsions. If you are at the beach, always provide access to fresh water for your dog.
If playing with water in the garden (e.g. in a paddling pool or with a hose) be careful not to allow your dog to drink too much water over a short period of time because this can lead to water intoxication. Signs of water intoxication included vomiting, lethargy, weakness, coma and convulsions.
If your pet is unwell with suspected heatstroke, or is showing signs of possible water intoxication or salt poisoning, consult your vet immediately

This is a good illustration of puppy socialization needs, shared from Good as Gold Training, but I would also add that all of the listed exposure and experience needs to feel *safe* for the puppy. If s/he is nervous, tentative, or fearful the fear should be handled by backing off a little and reintroducing very slowly and with lots of praise, food and patience. Sometimes, for the sake of "socialization", owners push their puppies too far and too fast, and it can backfire. Good socialization requires that we "read" our puppies and help them feel safe as they navigate the sounds, textures, people and animals in their new world.

Today we had a visit from Michelle (of Cleary Canines - The Puppy Specialist and Puppy School Bristol ) and her beautiful girl, Anja 😁 We had offlead stuff to brush up on before our forthcoming reassessment so we took the dogs up to the park to work through everything and to let them have a little runaround together 😊 Nearly everything went beautifully - Cheese's recall was a bit hit and miss until we realised that he still had his harness on and that had thrown him out (because when he's working he is never far enough away from me for a recall to be needed), once it was off he was back to his usual turning on a sixpence best, even when he was running to greet another dog ❤️ Back at the house, Michelle and I had coffee whilst Moss swung between "grumpy fun police", "toy obsessed fruitbat" and "cute and cuddly pupster" 🙄 Cheese and Anja had fun with the water, sprawled out on the sofas and raced around the garden 😁 Both boys are now snoring ❤️
