So I've just spent a long weekend learning virtually at the Control Unleashed conference, and then catching up with the bits I missed on the replays. It was FANTASTIC so many tips and tricks I picked up from the live labs and lots of geeky conversations. I love using patterns in training and it was great to see some of the updated versions, and the incorporation of ACE Freework into the games, which as many of you know I'm often recommending. I have had Leslie Mcdevitt's Control Unleashed book for several years but this was the first conference, and their third (some good things to come from the lockdown era) I'd been to. Leslie's games are so very useful for dogs of any age, really enjoyed this CPD 😁.

I enjoy working with all breeds and life stages, but my favourite has to be the puppy stage. Having been involved with raising nine family dogs from birth to adulthood, there's nothing that makes me go more gooey than seeing a pup figure something out for the first time.
Helping a new owner avoid some of the pitfalls of a puppy companion and supporting the puppy as they find their rhythm and where they fit in this crazy human world takes patience and consistency. I have been consistently refining the raising process for my clients, hoping each dog will have their home for life from the start or be extremely easy to rehome should the guardian's circumstances change unexpectedly.
Puppies' natural development stages can create a variety of challenges for their guardians. Whether it’s mouthing and inappropriate chewing (from the human’s point of view, the puppy doesn’t see anything wrong, nor should it, with gnawing on wooden coffee table legs ;-) or your arm). Or toilet training mishaps, Or digging up the prized vegetable patch. It’s a never ending learning journey and each Puppy is there to teach another amazing lesson, my dog before last would reduce stress ( this can be good or bad stress) through hu***ng and I took a bit of a deep dive into learning about this behaviour and how best to support and meet the needs of my then puppy to ensure he had outlets that were more appropriate to visiting family.
I have been there and worn the T-shirt on many occasions and I am always continuing my education through listening to podcasts, watching webinars and attending events that help me to supply the most ethical up to date training and management strategies to assist my clients with any concerts they have. Something that really matters to me is the sourcing of puppies. I have been especially lucky in that our first family dog resulted in a 30+ year love affair with a wonderful breed. Through this experience and my choosen careers, I became much more knowledgable about why a quality breeder really makes a huge difference, and the horrors of puppy farms. I am very thankful for Lucy's Law which has made it more difficult for puppy farms to operate but sadly this problem hasn't entirely disappeared and rescues are still struggling. I cannot stress enough that if you are looking for a puppy using a reputable breeder will benefit the world of dogs in the longterm. A breeder who cares will do their utmost to prevent a dog they bred to ending up in rescue. They will complete health checks to ensure to the best of their ability that they are proofing the dogs of the future. They will spend time introducing the puppy to things found in most home environments so the puppy is given a more optimistic outlook and resilience to challenges. They will be at the end of the phone for any enquiries for the life of the pup. So if you are thinking of getting a puppy anytime in the future, if you truly want a lifetime companion, I hope you will take all the time necessary to source a puppy from a responible breeder or rescue and don't get sucked in by a clever seller. If something doesn't seem quite right, trust your instincts and walk away. By giving money to 'rescue' one puppy, you are perpetuating a supply and demand chain which means there will be a mum like Lucy still being abused for profit. It is so important to see the mum with the pups and to observe that the interactions look normal. If you are searching for a particular breed, go to a show and chat with the people there. Check if the breed club has breed coordinators that can introduce you to the breed to make sure it's right for you. You should expect to get a grilling from a good breeder because they absolutely will want to ask you plenty of questions to be sure their puppy is being placed in the best possible "forever home".

"Don't Walk Your Dog Day" Here are some suggested activities for the day:

Indoor Playtime: Set up a designated play area inside your Home where you and your dog can engage in various activities such as playing fetch with soft toys, hide and seek, or tug-of-war.

Training Sessions: Spend some quality time reinforcing learnt skills or teaching your dog new tricks. Training not only stimulates your dog mentally but also strengthens the bond between you both.

Puzzle Toys: puzzle toys or treat-dispensing toys that require your dog to solve a puzzle to access their treats can keep them entertained and mentally stimulated.

Interactive Games: Engage in interactive games like "find the treat" where you hide treats around the house for your dog to find using their sense of smell.

Homemade Treats: Spend the day making homemade dog treats together. There are plenty of simple recipes available online using ingredients like sardines, oats, and pumpkin.

Mindfulness Session: Practice mindfulness or meditation with your dog. Spend a few minutes sitting quietly together, focusing on your breath, and allowing your dog to relax beside you.

Virtual Playdates: Arrange virtual playdates with other dog owners. Set up a video call and let your dogs interact with each other virtually while you chat with fellow pet parents.

Remember, while the concept is not to walk your dog on this day, ensuring your dog still gets mental and physical stimulation is crucial for their overall well-being. Always tailor activities to suit your dog's preferences, abilities, and health considerations.

I'm delighted to be sharing space with The Dog Nose it will be a huge additional bonus for clients to have nose work enrichment and courses available to choose from in the same location, and proximity wise it couldn't have worked out better being just a few minutes from our last location at Broad Hinton and just up the road from the butterfly/garden centre. I look forward to seeing old and new faces and pups again next weekend 😊
