It might be almost Halloween but we all know for many of us the biggest “fright night” comes very shortly after: fireworks

November 5th is traditionally the evening associated with fireworks displays and bonfires although on more recent times it has become common for individuals and events to let off fireworks more frequently any time in the week leading up to and the week after November 5th (and, to be honest, quite randomly at many other times across the year)

It’s not just dogs who are affected. Many cats, small animals like rabbits, horses, cattle and wildlife (and people!) are often negatively affected.

If you have an animal you share your life with, who is affected by firework noises, it’s a good idea to start preparing now.

*if your pet is particularly fearful, call your vets for advice on fear reducing medicine NOW. It’s not long to go and you re likely to need to have your pet vet checked and weighed and decisions on the best medication made tailored specifically to your pet (there are several fear reducing medicines which work in different ways each with various pros and potential negatives that need considering)

*start drawing your curtains earlier, putting on background music (see below) and associating this with something calm and fun for your pet to do. Perhaps it’s a delicious paste on a washable mat, or an indoor calm treat search, or maybe it’s a massage and groom in the presence of a calming odour.

*consider background noises. These can help because they help everyone stay calmer - the radio station Classic FM for pets is back for November 2024. Link below. But you may prefer some other rhythmic calming tracks played through speakers. It can be helpful to have calming music on in the room you ll be spending the evening and have white noise and rhythmic sounds like drumming sounds, by a window or in the periphery of the main room.
Start playing them quietly now and associate them going on with calm, social activities and then you can gradually increase the volume over a number of days / evenings

*bring feeding and toilet opportunities earlier, days in advance. Make sure your dog is always wearing a collar with up to date tag information and that your microchip details for all your animals are up to date. Check the clips on your leads and buckles on harnesses and collars are safe and secure and if relevant to you, have your dog on a long line for every toilet opportunity from around 3pm. You may want to increase the number of litter trays you have for your cats and start shutting them in for several hours from mid afternoon each day. Don’t forget to consider bringing any small pets into more sound proofed areas too.

We ll share some more tips over the next week too
We hope you can all stay safe x

Unique Puppy Socialisation event - Puppy Play, move and Discover

A new small sensory field, providing new and novel experiences for your puppy, working on all their senses, in a carefully controlled way.

For our puppies the world can be a scary place, hence it's so important to get their socialisation right, this guided session will take you through how to build your puppies confidence around new and novel experiences, using all their senses i.e. Sound, sight, touch, taste as well as developing their confidence moving over objects and developing their proprioceptive skills.

We will help guide you and your puppy through these new experiences, explaining the body language you are seeing, how we can support our puppies so that they don't get overwhelmed.

These are held in a secure field near Childswickham and only cost £12 for the hour, we only take a maximum of 4 puppies per session to ensure one to one attention and guidance.

N.B. Please note puppies will not be off lead during these sessions, and plenty of timeouts and pausing will occur to ensure your puppy isn't overwhelmed.

Next session:-
* Saturday October 12 @ 9:00 - 9:45am and 10 am - 10:45am.

Meeting our puppies needs whether it be physical or mental enrichment will really help to reduce the biting and unwanted behaviour.. but don’t forget they need plenty of sleep too… luv this post from Jane..

PUPPIES 🐶

Puppies bite, they chew stuff, they can keep you awake at night and take time to learn a sleep routine, they p*e and poo and sometimes do it inside. It can take time to house train, some more than others.
They can easily get confused about our expectations, they can get frustrated when learning about life and get shouty and bitey, they get tired and bitey and don't want to sleep.

They go through different development stages as they grow having constant new and different experiences, sometimes they deal with these changes sometimes they don't. They make mistakes, they get overaroused, the arousal makes them behave in certain ways like, barking, grabbing, lunging.
They just act on their impulses and they need us to guide them. We need to be kind, understanding and tolerant.

They're beautiful little beings, learning every day, having new experiences every day. Humans brought them into the world, humans give them a home. We have a responsibility to guide and support them through their development with kindness and compassion.
Puppies are hard work but I love the experience, the good and the bad. They are all individually beautifully unique.

We NEED to meet their NEEDS.

They are never with us long enough, before you know it you'll be walking out of the vets with nothing but a collar, lead, a broken heart and loads of memories ...

Enjoy your puppy, embrace the journey, make beautiful memories, even if they're dicks sometimes 🐾❤️

Helping our puppies through their Puppy Socialisation, it is so important we support them properly and don't overwhelm them. And no its not just about saying hi to other people and playing with dogs... Love this article from the fantastic Jane Arden...

What is puppy socialisation?

It is a stage of development in your puppy. It starts at 4 weeks and ends around 16 weeks. However actual socialisation should continue well after 16 weeks as your puppy will go through other development stages having different experiences.

The first thing to consider is your puppy will go through their first fear stage 7/9 weeks old. It's important not to overwhelm them. It's also important if they're struggling to be left alone not to leave them.

During the socialisation stage of development, it's not about socialisation in the context that we understand it. It's about exposure to the world. It's so important that the exposure the puppy gets is positive emotional experiences. So a nervous or sensitive puppy needs less. They can see the world but they don't need to interact with everything in it. They need exposure that they as an individual can cope with. Doing more will not turn them into a confident social butterfly it will probably make them more fearful, even reactive.

It's needs to be a slow steady pressure free pace. Slow down your walks, stop and give them time to take in the environment, there's new sounds, sights and smells. This can be a sensory overload for some. Let them sit and watch, take your time so they can take it all in and then process it.

We used to call it a critical stage of development but it's now a sensitive, because it's flexible. Your puppy is sensitive to experiences so make sure they are positive.

If your puppy is scared support them and help them. This won't reinforce or reward negative behaviours that are driven out of fear, apprehension or caution, it will cause them to relax and feel safe and then those behaviours will stop.
Yes the puppy will become a little dependent on your support but once they feel safe you can teach independence and reward brave choices. Feeling safe will activate exploratory control processes in the brain and your puppy will choose to explore and approach. This is much more powerful than being lured to something they're scared of. Luring with treats to scary things causes pressure and conflict which are negative emotional and stressful states. Timing is key and reinforcement should happen in safe places for it to be emotionally reinforcing.

Forget behaviour and think emotions and experiences at this time.

Work at the puppy's pace, don't rush 🐾❤️

Just a reminder of the signs of Heat Stroke, hot pavements and when its too hot to take your pups outside..

25/06/2024

************** IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT **************
All classes have been postponed tonight due to the heat. It is not safe to be taking young puppies/dogs out into the heat today, and with temperatures hitting 27-28 in places, its too dangerous to let them walk on tarmac, plus they will be more tired due to the heat.

I have emailed everyone affected tonight, this will obviously mean our classes will be pushed out by one week, and the next puppy school class due to start on the 16th July will now start 23rd July. I apologise for any inconvenience caused but the health, and safety of the dogs comes above anything else..
