A couple of days ago we took 3 teams to do a multi surface achievement session. All the teams who too part were capable of this achievement.
The dogs didn't work the trail as expected. There were a lot of things going on in the environment but one of the things was the temperature! It was cold 🥶

This explanation of what happens to odour and the dogs is courtesy of Alexandra Butler
All my Scent clients...please read! 💛

So what happens in these conditions that we need to be aware of for our dogs.

Freezing conditions have effects on both the odour particles and the dogs olfactory system making it harder for them to trail in such conditions.

These are, what I feel, the most important considerations:

• In freezing conditions, odour molecules move slower due to the low temperature. This can cause the odour to remain more concentrated in areas making it harder to follow the trail as it spreads less effectively.

• Odour binds differently to frozen surfaces like ice compared to soil or grass. Ice can reflect odour, causing it to disperse unpredictably.

• Cold air holds less moisture, potentially drying out the trail and reducing the intensity of the odour.

• Cold air can constrict the blood vessels in the dog’s nose, slightly reducing scent detection sensitivity

• The cold can increase the dog’s energy expenditure to stay warm, potentially affecting focus and stamina

• In extremely cold temperatures, the odour molecules can freeze. This reduces the availability of molecules for the dog to detect.

• Small temperature variations can occur. These “microclimates” may trap odour or keep it more stable, while exposed areas might have less detectable scent due to wind or freezing conditions.

These two dogs were amazing today! 2nd session of with a very large gap between sessions. Both teams have obviously done their homework 🥰 we worked a lot on short trails and looking at body language! I can't wait to see them continue their Trail Hunt Journey well done Jane & Misty, Pauline & Jack💛 💛💛
