2023 🐕
I have been honoured to work with so many dogs this year and this is just a small handful of them. A huge thank you to all my clients! Wishing you all a happy new year ⭐️
A little example of a leave command
A little example & practise of ‘leave’ on a fresh marrow bone.
Teaching your dog a strong ‘leave’ command is so important and can literally be a life saver! It can be used for a whole variety of things, such as asking your dog to give up a chew/bone they are eating that has gotten to small or asking them to leave their toy so you can play with them again. But it can also be used in many other situations, like asking your dog to leave something dangerous it may have picked up by mistake. Examples can include a whole host of nasty or harmful things our dogs may take pleasure in wanting to put in their mouths, such as face masks, other dogs poo (yes human poo too!), dirty tissues, chicken bones, wrappers etc. It can also be used as a clear command to ask your dog to disengage and/or move away from something you don’t want it to fixate on or react too, such as a squirrel, another dog or a person. In these situations, having a strong and reliable leave can really help keep your dog safe and keep them from harm, so is definitely one worth teaching and proofing.
Just a little snippet of some training from one of our puppies in yesterday’s class. Some amazing work from little Lexi, who has mastered walking past distractions ‘off-lead’ and maintaining her heel position beautifully. Well done guys! 😊🐾
It is so lovely to receive training updates from owners like this, showing their hard work and how everything is coming along! This gives us the chance to see exactly how the owners and dog are doing, where abouts they are in their training and any little tweaks and tips that can be made or given. Well done to these owners and their young puppy for some beautiful lead walking! 👏🏼😊
Teaching your dog to have good manners around people, such as not jumping up, is so important. When I first met Leo, it’s safe to say I was pretty much wearing him when he came to greet me! This is his training coming along really nicely outside, with added distractions such as boxes of food. His owners are working hard at improving his impulse control and his engagement with them around things he is usually very distracted by! 🐾
The beginnings of teaching ‘leave’
Draco learning the beginnings of the ‘leave’ command and smashing it! He cottoned on to what he needed to do very quickly. Taking the time to teach your dog this and then proofing it, can truly save your dogs life. Our dogs are so precious and the world can be full of so many things that can be dangerous or hurt our dogs, no matter how hard we try to avoid them. Dropped chicken bones, rat bait, takeaway boxes etc to name a few. Leave is one of the most useful and important things you can teach.
This young dog had some issues resource guarding items she had been given, stolen or found. Her behaviour could be unpredictable and living in a home with children, it was important this could be addressed safely and effectively. Although I generally think dogs should be left alone when eating meals and chewing bones, there are always times you need to safely have your dog leave something when asked, for example: a bone that has got too small or something they shouldn’t have. If your dog cannot do this, it could be fatal. This is Dotty now happily able to give things up with ease and will wait for her reward. This is all down to her owners consistency and hard work. Dotty is a dog I see frequently for walks and this was a little bit of practise. 🙂🐾

This pretty lady gets very excited walking past people and other dogs and has resource guarding issues. As well as working on her impulse control and ability to listen to her owners, we tightened up her lead walking so she is more engaged and relaxed around high level distractions. The owners smashed it 😊🐾
