If you have a reactive dog, I can bet my last pound they rush out of the front door without even looking back! This burst of excitement can set the stage for a stressful walk! To change this, focus on making the door a calm, controlled space. Practice having your dog sit and wait before heading out, and reward them for calm behavior. A lot of clients are working around thresholds atm as you can see! 🙌 I always say ‘an open door isn’t an invitation to leave’ Remember, a calm start equals a calmer walk!
If your dog is reactive, the excitement of seeing their lead or harness can set the tone for a crazy walk! To avoid this, focus on creating calmness around the walking equipment.✅ Try leaving the lead and harness out in a neutral space where your dog can see them without getting too excited. ✅ When it's time to put them on, do so slowly and without fanfare. The goal is to keep your dog as relaxed as possible before you even step outside. This will set the stage for a calmer, more enjoyable walk.✅ Lead = Sit exercise. Another thing I like to do with my clients is teach their dog that seeing the lead in their hands means sit down on the floor thus creating calmness.
1. I used DISTANCE to prevent her feeling unsafe. 2. I taught her that looking at other dogs is a GOOD thing using high value food and then created a pattern of looking at them then looking at me. 3. I repeated the above. A LOT. If you’d like to have this behaviour nailed… DM me! Follow for more dog training tips!
Have you ever tried to kiss your dog or take a photo and she turns her head away? It’s a subtle signal (in this case not so subtle lol) that means : 1. I’m no threat.2. Please calm down.. I don’t want to interact right now. 3. Polite way of saying ‘I’d like space’. Im not comfortable with what you’re doing. If your dog turns its head when you approach, the best thing to do is to recognise that and move back to give your dog more space. This can prevent an escalation of distance increasing behaviour… which means it might prevent your dog growling and/or biting. I wish I’d continued filming but I needed to walk away so Kiri would follow me and not give little Lottie a hard time 🐶Follow me for more dog training tips!

The relationship you have with your dog is the foundation of your training.I work on the relationship with my dogs individually every single day. Here are just 3 examples; 1. Play - I try and incorporate a healthy dose of FUN into their lives on a daily basis. I want them to feel GOOD when I’m around. 2. Consent - I want them to know that they can trust me. They can say yes or No to touch/handling and I will listen. 3. They feel safe around me because I don’t put them into situations that they can’t cope with. I have their backs ALWAYS. They always have me between them and potential danger - I use body blocking around triggers. Follow me for more dog training tips!
If you want to walk your dog off lead or on a long line without being interrupted by bank holiday dog walkers, shouting ‘it’s okay - he’s friendly!’ as their teenage, hormone crazed 30 kg dog bulldozes into your dog’s space then hiring a secure dog field is a good idea! Secure fields allow you to exercise and practice training your dog or puppy in a safe environment. It is YOUR space ONLY for 60 or 30 mins and most are very reasonably priced to hire. They are also great for introducing dogs to one another on neutral territory as there is lots of space to utilise distance. We used Marilyn’s Meadow but there are LOTS of secure/dog fields popping up all over the place!
Forget SIT & PAW. Teach your puppy to target your hand with their nose. It’s much more useful and has many applications! #dogtraineruk #puppylove #puppylife #labradorretriever #recall #targettraining
1. It allows your small dog to have more freedom, therefore meeting your dogs needs for exploration and adventure! 2. Calling your dog AWAY from another larger off lead dog or a road could potentially save your dogs life! 3. Small dogs need TRAINING too! Just because you have a smaller dog doesn’t mean you skip the work needed to have desirable behaviour! So if you have small dog, then get training! Follow me for more dog training tips!
Puppies are not born knowing how to walk on a lead or what a walk is! We need to introduce walks with a slow, thoughtful mindset and empathise with our puppy when they tell us they aren’t quite comfortable. #puppy #puppywalk #puppiesfirstwalk #cockerpoo #spaniel #dogtraineruk #puppytraineruk
I’m VERY busy working with some real cuties atm! AND lovely owners! ⭐️🐶 #puppy #puppytraining #dogtraining #dogtraineruk
Recall is simple: 1. Choose a word or sound that is NOT your dog’s name. 2. ‘Pair’ that word with something your dog LOVES! 3. Start this in your KITCHEN not the local park. Start at ‘nursery’ not ‘university’ 4. Bonus tip: while you’re teaching this please use a long line until your dog is recall trained! #recalltraining #recall#dogtraineruk #dogtraining #jackrussell #chihuahua
