Firework Recovery!! 🙏 Read this if your dog was affected by fireworks last night. ✅

If you’ve been spending the last few nights contemplating mass murder on your neighbours while trying your best to reassure your dog that..

‘No. We are NOT all under attack and going to die’

then you best read this..

Fear & anxiety. It’s normal.

It’s our bodies way of preparing ourselves to activate Fight or Flight mode.

Without it we would never react quickly enough to an oncoming threat that could potentially save our life.

It’s the same for our dogs.

We can see on the outside how fear affects our dogs and it can be heartbreaking but what’s happening on the inside is just as important...

When a dog is under acute stress, this activates the fight or flight system producing a huge rush of the hormone Adrenaline.

Adrenaline prepares the body to escape the threat or fight back by increasing the heart rate and expanding the air passages in the lungs.

Adrenaline then activates the production of Cortisol which is also known as the Stress Hormone.
This causes the muscles to be fuelled with energy further enabling the dog to be ready for action.
All of this happens rather suddenly.

It has to in order to be effective.

The thing is, stress can arrive quickly.

But LEAVES slowly..

This means that it can take a while for adrenaline and especially cortisol to return to normal levels.
Research has suggested up to 72 hours in the case of Cortisol.

If your dog doesn’t get a chance to relax and allow these levels to get back to baseline then this can cause something called Trigger Stacking.

Trigger Stacking basically means that if a dog is affected by a stress trigger and is then exposed to more, without allowing the stress hormones to reduce, these triggers can STACK UP the cortisol causing the dog to react to something that it would normally be fine with.

❌ Stress overload ❌

😌 Stress is exhausting. Allow your dog to sleep as much as possible in the warm & quiet.

😌 No walks. Stay at home for a day or two.

😌 Rearrange those Vet & Grooming appointments!

😌 Instead look at doing some nose work games, calm trick training or buy your dog a new long lasting chew.

😌 If you have visitors keep your dog away and occupied with a stuffed kong or Licki Mat.

😌 Snuggles on the sofa helps!

Let’s give our dogs a well deserved breather from all the stress and set them up for success!

We are thinking of all you doggies that are not coping with the loud bangs and booms tonight 😓

We are okay as we don’t have many booms living in the countryside.

Stay calm it will soon be over!

Keeping your dog feeling happy at Halloween!

🎃 Although we like to dress up in fancy dress it doesn't mean our dogs do too.

It can be uncomfortable and scary for them. Think twice about plonking an outfit on your dog...unless it has been 'paired' with food or play. If so, only leave it on for a few minutes at a time to prevent the dog overheating or getting uncomfortable.

🎃 Please don't be a t**t and try and scare your dog or 'prank' him by jumping out in fancy dress.
This is nothing but cruel.

🎃 Keep your dog well away from trick or treaters if your dog has a tendency to be nervous around new things.

Again, weird costumes can be scary so keep your dog in another room while you open the door and keep him occupied with something tasty such as a stuffed Toppl or brand new long lasting chew like a Pigs Ear.

🎃If you have a dog that gets over excited and barky at the sound of the doorbell then a good idea is to have a bucket of sweets near the front door with a sign that says

‘Treats! No tricks - please do NOT ring the bell but help yourself!’

🎃 Lastly, please be aware that chocolate is poisonous to dogs so keep it out of reach of your pets.
Always have your vets number to hand in case of emergencies.

A few tips and a bit of common sense will go a long way to keep our dogs feeling safe and happy this Halloween! 🎃

If your dog is off the lead and you have to ‘make’ it come back by using a harsh tone, then you’ve misunderstood the recall assignment.

Slip Lead.. on a Small Dog?? 😳

I’ve just seen a video on social media of a well known and popular trainer talking about the use of using a slip lead correction on a very small dog.

In case you're unfamiliar with a ‘slip lead’ it's essentially a rope slipped over the dog's neck that tightens as pressure is applied.

Originally, slip leads were designed for working dogs, such as gun dogs, allowing handlers to easily slip the lead on and off when transporting the dog from a vehicle to the field.

I own a couple of slip leads. Mainly to keep in the car in case I see a stray dog out and about.

I occasionally will use one to slip over Kiri’s neck to pop her outside for a toilet break but there is absolutely no pressure applied.

NEVER as a training tool.

It’s called a ‘Slip’ lead for a reason.

You slip it on and slip it off….

However, there’s been a rise in trainers, especially on social media, promoting the use of slip leads to teach loose-lead walking or to address reactivity.

These trainers usually have the slip lead up high near the dogs ears in an uncomfortable position as a means of ‘controlling’ the dog but then they will also give the dog a quick jerk of the slip lead as a punishment so it tightens and releases.

Note: it’s called a ‘slip’ lead not a jerk, correction… or a pop lead! 👀

Our dogs' necks are fragile and delicate especially toy breeds!
There is absolutely no reason to use a quick jerk on a small dog's neck—imagine how painful and uncomfortable that must be for them 😳
And dangerous….. ouch!

Be cautious of trainers who rely on quick fixes like slip lead corrections.

If you see a trainer using a slip lead INCORRECTLY…. meaning they're using it as a training tool for sudden jerks to the neck, it's time to walk away.

Instead, seek out a trainer who uses positive, safer methods that prioritize your dog’s well-being and long-term happiness. 🐶💛

Happy 15th Birthday Kiri! 💜

In 2009, before I became a dog trainer, I went to view some Jack Russell puppies.
I wanted a female and was told by the breeder that there was only one girl in a litter of boys but she was very small.

I expected to find a sickly runt and I remember thinking ‘if that’s the case, be strong and walk away’.
However, when I walked into the cosy kitchen, all the puppies looked lively and healthy.
We met Mum and Dad over the gate and they were friendly and bouncy.

I looked down at my shoe and there she was...

this little 8-week old butterball tugging at my laces!
The only female in a litter of boys.

‘Hmm. That’s no sickly runt!’ I thought.

I picked her up and instantly fell in love with this tiny, squidgy delight.
She melted into me and I looked at her little cheeky face. There was something about her.

She was white with brindle patches, one of them shaped like a heart. My last two dogs were brindle - it was meant to be!
We took her home that night.

And what a joy it has been!

SO many years of adventures, playtime, memories and fun!
She was and continues to be a wonderful soul.

My best friend. My teacher. My reason for becoming a dog trainer.

Happy Birthday Kiri.

This is what grooming should look like at a dog grooming salon.
Giving the dog agency, freedom to move and carry out the grooming in incremental stages.

Absolutely brilliant! 🤩
