Happy New Year from Halo Pups to everyone, especially my clients who have worked extremely hard this year!! 🥳

It has been one hell of a year and I almost quit the business probably around 3 times. 😂😅

Going from mainly online clients to off-line and building up a client base in a new area has been challenging.
I’ve basically started again afresh and after being crippled with driving anxiety for 20 years I am back out on the road again. (I’m very proud of myself)

I’ve met some incredible people, lovely dogs and committed pet parents who want training that is effective but with ethics pinned at the top.

I’ve had many wins, lots of great results, made PLENTY of mistakes but I’m so excited to be heading into 2025 with some brand-new ideas and some established clients behind me to continue pushing for those training results.
I have a new mission.
So watch this space.

A big thankyou to everyone! And especially to for having my back and pushing me forward. 🥳💪🙌

‘It’s just so liberating’ 🕊️

That’s how one of my clients described her training experience with me yesterday.

Training doesn’t just help you manage your dog’s behaviour, it unlocks freedom for both you and your dog!

It allows you more options, more confidence, and more ways to enjoy life together. ☀️ 🌳

I mean, if that isn’t a goal for 2025, I don’t know what it is 👌😁

Without training, you’re more likely to feel stressed, overwhelmed, and frustrated. And that frustration can build up in your dog, too, leading to behaviours that make life even harder. 😓

It’s about having the tools to guide your journey together, steering the boat in the direction you want to go. 💪🛥️

Think of training as building a toolkit. 🧰

Each new skill is like adding another tool you can use whenever you need it. ⬇️

🤔 Need to pass another dog calmly on a walk?

🧰 Reach for your ‘Focused Walking’ Skill to navigate from A to B without reaction 🔨

🤔 Want to take a nice pic of your dog laying next to the Christmas Tree?

🧰 Use your ‘Settle on a Mat’ Skill to station your dog without forcing your dog and getting frustrated 🔨

🤔 Your dog has something in their eye?

🧰 Make use of your ‘Chin Rest’ Skill 🔨 to safely remove the foreign body.

Training isn’t all about making your dog ‘do stuff’ - it’s about giving you and your dog the freedom and the options that you need to spend the next 15 years together in harmony 🙏

The result? A happier, more confident dog and a more relaxed you!

Pic of my good girls who know lots of skills and are a joy! 🩷 🩷

Dogs and Christmas Events. 🎄🐶

Imagine you’re a 3 year old child.

You’re out with your mum and dad, and while you’re not entirely sure where you are or what’s happening, you feel safe because they’re there.

As you walk, the world around you starts to CHANGE.

You hear loud, booming sounds in the distance, the chatter of voices becomes a constant hum, and suddenly, you’re navigating a sea of legs.. many of which bump into you without notice.

You start to feel disoriented. 😓

The smells are wonderful but SO strong, some are weird and strange.. the lights are bright and hurt your eyes.
and THEN .. it happens:

Another child suddenly appears, really close.. they are BIGGER and older than you, they are staring and lunge as if to push you. 😳

Startled, you jump back and shout!

You look to your parents for reassurance, but they yell ‘NO!’ and yank your arm..it hurts.

They keep pulling you along, their attention on everything but you.

As the noise grows, the smells intensify, and the crowd presses closer.
You start to feel frightened.

You don’t understand what’s happening or how to make it stop.

‘Why is no-one helping me. Where are we going?’

You just want to get out of there, but you CAN’T.

Now imagine this isn’t a three-year-old child.
Imagine this is YOUR DOG.

This is exactly what I saw at the weekend at a Christmas event.

❌ I saw dogs that were overwhelmed.

❌ I saw dogs that were showing stress signals.

❌ I saw dogs with tense bodies, low tucked tails and tight closed mouths.

❌ I saw dogs that were reacting to other dogs because they were startled, too close and trigger stacked.

❌I saw dogs that really didn’t understand what was going on, they DID NOT want to be there but they were forced to walk because their owners were literally dragging them on tight leads from pillar to post.

I WAS watching.

Many owners seemed oblivious and shockingly didn’t seem to care about how their dog felt in that moment.

Making the Right Choice ✅

While it’s natural to want to include our dogs in our lives and share special memories it’s important to ask:

Is this event truly for them, or is it for US?

Sometimes, the kindest thing we can do is to take them out for a romp across the field and then leave our dogs at HOME to chill where they feel SAFE and comfortable.

Busy, noisy events are designed for people NOT dogs.

Forcing them into such an environment can be unnecessarily stressful and even damage the relationship they have with us!

Please… Let’s keep our dogs feeling safe, warm and comfortable this festive season.

Firework Recovery!! 🙏 Read this if your dog was affected by fireworks last night. ✅

If you’ve been spending the last few nights contemplating mass murder on your neighbours while trying your best to reassure your dog that..

‘No. We are NOT all under attack and going to die’

then you best read this..

Fear & anxiety. It’s normal.

It’s our bodies way of preparing ourselves to activate Fight or Flight mode.

Without it we would never react quickly enough to an oncoming threat that could potentially save our life.

It’s the same for our dogs.

We can see on the outside how fear affects our dogs and it can be heartbreaking but what’s happening on the inside is just as important...

When a dog is under acute stress, this activates the fight or flight system producing a huge rush of the hormone Adrenaline.

Adrenaline prepares the body to escape the threat or fight back by increasing the heart rate and expanding the air passages in the lungs.

Adrenaline then activates the production of Cortisol which is also known as the Stress Hormone.
This causes the muscles to be fuelled with energy further enabling the dog to be ready for action.
All of this happens rather suddenly.

It has to in order to be effective.

The thing is, stress can arrive quickly.

But LEAVES slowly..

This means that it can take a while for adrenaline and especially cortisol to return to normal levels.
Research has suggested up to 72 hours in the case of Cortisol.

If your dog doesn’t get a chance to relax and allow these levels to get back to baseline then this can cause something called Trigger Stacking.

Trigger Stacking basically means that if a dog is affected by a stress trigger and is then exposed to more, without allowing the stress hormones to reduce, these triggers can STACK UP the cortisol causing the dog to react to something that it would normally be fine with.

❌ Stress overload ❌

😌 Stress is exhausting. Allow your dog to sleep as much as possible in the warm & quiet.

😌 No walks. Stay at home for a day or two.

😌 Rearrange those Vet & Grooming appointments!

😌 Instead look at doing some nose work games, calm trick training or buy your dog a new long lasting chew.

😌 If you have visitors keep your dog away and occupied with a stuffed kong or Licki Mat.

😌 Snuggles on the sofa helps!

Let’s give our dogs a well deserved breather from all the stress and set them up for success!

We are thinking of all you doggies that are not coping with the loud bangs and booms tonight 😓

We are okay as we don’t have many booms living in the countryside.

Stay calm it will soon be over!

Keeping your dog feeling happy at Halloween!

🎃 Although we like to dress up in fancy dress it doesn't mean our dogs do too.

It can be uncomfortable and scary for them. Think twice about plonking an outfit on your dog...unless it has been 'paired' with food or play. If so, only leave it on for a few minutes at a time to prevent the dog overheating or getting uncomfortable.

🎃 Please don't be a t**t and try and scare your dog or 'prank' him by jumping out in fancy dress.
This is nothing but cruel.

🎃 Keep your dog well away from trick or treaters if your dog has a tendency to be nervous around new things.

Again, weird costumes can be scary so keep your dog in another room while you open the door and keep him occupied with something tasty such as a stuffed Toppl or brand new long lasting chew like a Pigs Ear.

🎃If you have a dog that gets over excited and barky at the sound of the doorbell then a good idea is to have a bucket of sweets near the front door with a sign that says

‘Treats! No tricks - please do NOT ring the bell but help yourself!’

🎃 Lastly, please be aware that chocolate is poisonous to dogs so keep it out of reach of your pets.
Always have your vets number to hand in case of emergencies.

A few tips and a bit of common sense will go a long way to keep our dogs feeling safe and happy this Halloween! 🎃

Slip Lead.. on a Small Dog?? 😳

I’ve just seen a video on social media of a well known and popular trainer talking about the use of using a slip lead correction on a very small dog.

In case you're unfamiliar with a ‘slip lead’ it's essentially a rope slipped over the dog's neck that tightens as pressure is applied.

Originally, slip leads were designed for working dogs, such as gun dogs, allowing handlers to easily slip the lead on and off when transporting the dog from a vehicle to the field.

I own a couple of slip leads. Mainly to keep in the car in case I see a stray dog out and about.

I occasionally will use one to slip over Kiri’s neck to pop her outside for a toilet break but there is absolutely no pressure applied.

NEVER as a training tool.

It’s called a ‘Slip’ lead for a reason.

You slip it on and slip it off….

However, there’s been a rise in trainers, especially on social media, promoting the use of slip leads to teach loose-lead walking or to address reactivity.

These trainers usually have the slip lead up high near the dogs ears in an uncomfortable position as a means of ‘controlling’ the dog but then they will also give the dog a quick jerk of the slip lead as a punishment so it tightens and releases.

Note: it’s called a ‘slip’ lead not a jerk, correction… or a pop lead! 👀

Our dogs' necks are fragile and delicate especially toy breeds!
There is absolutely no reason to use a quick jerk on a small dog's neck—imagine how painful and uncomfortable that must be for them 😳
And dangerous….. ouch!

Be cautious of trainers who rely on quick fixes like slip lead corrections.

If you see a trainer using a slip lead INCORRECTLY…. meaning they're using it as a training tool for sudden jerks to the neck, it's time to walk away.

Instead, seek out a trainer who uses positive, safer methods that prioritize your dog’s well-being and long-term happiness. 🐶💛
