☀️ With the hot weather beginning to make an appearance, it is important to be aware of the signs and dangers of heatstroke in our pets ☀️
Heat stroke can quickly become a life-threatening emergency, so if you suspect that your pet has heatstroke, it is important to be aware of the steps to take.
What should I do if I think my pet has heatstroke?
☀️ Immediately contact your veterinary practice, their out of hours service, or the veterinary practice that is closest to you
🌳 Move your pet to a cool area, such as a cool indoor room or a shaded area
💧 Slowly pour cool water over your pet, or place a cool towel over and under their body (make sure the water is not too cold as this can lead to shock, and be careful to avoid causing stress or inhalation of the water)
💨 Create a breeze by using a fan, or if you are on the way to your vet practice, ensure that the air-con is on and that the car windows are open
🚰 Offer your pet a cold drink of water, but do not force them to drink
🧊 Wrap an ice pack or frozen veg into a towel and place this next to them
Remember to avoid cuddling your pet whilst you are cooling them down as this can make them warmer.
‼️ Regularly keep an eye on your pets on warm days, as heatstroke can develop rapidly ‼️
