Stay safe out there - a twister has been spotted in Livingston....
With tomorrow's red weather warnings your dogs might not be able to get their usual outdoor walks and exercise. But don't worry—staying indoors doesn’t mean your dog has to be bored! Here are five ideas to keep your dog entertained and stimulated while you stay cosy and safe at home.
1. Scentwork: Find the Treat or Toy
Dogs love to use their noses, and scent games are a fantastic way to tire them out mentally.
▪Grab some of your dog's favourite treats or a well-loved toy.
▪Start by letting your dog see you "hide" the treat or toy in an easy-to-find place, like behind a chair or under a cushion.
▪Use a cue like "find it!" and encourage your dog to sniff it out.
▪Once they’ve got the hang of it, make it more challenging by hiding the treat in harder-to-reach spots or in another room. Even keep them out the room while you hide them!
This is not only fun but also boosts their problem-solving skills and uses up plenty of energy! Include a "wait" at the beginning and get in some impulse control too!
2. Shaping Games: Let Them Think for Themselves
Shaping games are a wonderful way to build your dog’s confidence and creativity while strengthening your bond.
🔹Grab a folded blanket.
🔹Put it on the floor and see what your dog does naturally. Mark and reward (with a clicker or verbal "yes") every time they interact with the object—sniffing, touching it with a paw, or stepping on it.
🔹Gradually build on this by waiting for the next step before marking. For example, initially mark and reward for looking at the blanket (3 times), then moving towards the blanket (3 times), then stepping on the blanket (3 times) - building it up slowly until your dog goes onto the blanket and lies down! This won't happen immediately but you could break this down into a few sessions during the day. Trust me this is tiring for the dog! Remove the blanket when you are not training.
Shaping games not only exercise their brain but are great for boosting engagement and co
