❗️DOG VACCINES - IMPORTANT INFORMATION ❗️

Leptospirosis vaccines are changing!
Over the years, the strains causing leptospirosis in dogs across Europe and the UK have changed. Lepto 4 was developed as a result of these changes and gives broader protections to dogs against leptospirosis.

Leptospirosis (often called lepto) is an infectious bacterial disease. It is commonly spread through contact with water or soil contaminated with the urine of infected wildlife, particularly rats and rodents. The bacteria can survive there for weeks or months and enters the body through mucous membranes, in particular those of the eyes, nose, or mouth, or through a cut or scratch.

MSD the manufacturers of our leptospirosis vaccines have made the decision to discontinue L2 in response to reviewing the updated WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association) guidelines. In the UK, there is a new and additional strain, called Bratislava, that is covered by L4, but not L2. In line with this recommendation and to help protect as many dogs as possible, MSD have decided to discontinue supply of L2 to all veterinary practices.

What does this mean for you and your pet?
All dogs currently vaccinated with L2 will have to transition to L4 at their yearly booster. This will entail two vaccinations, 4 weeks apart and in order to support this transition MSD will be supplying the second vaccination for your pet, free of charge.

If you have any concerns or worries, please speak to a member of our team.

Richard, Louise and Dawn recently visited Pet Cremation Services in Northampton. We have used PCS for a number of years and they have always been professional and friendly. Their staff are caring and compassionate and whilst a large company, with many branches throughout the UK, our experience was of a “family” feel.

Situated about a hour from the practice, they have peaceful farewell rooms where you are able to say your final goodbyes, should you wish to attend the cremation of your pet. A choice of caskets are on offer from the many that are displayed. Ashes can also be placed in a range of jewellery.

We are often asked how we can be sure that the ashes that are returned are your pet. We were able to see the fully documented process they have in place using a 6 point traceability check list, from our practice to when they are returned to us.

We have added some photos from our visit. Should you have any questions, please do ask us

⚠️IMPORTANT REMINDER FOR ALL BIRDKEEPERS⚠️

In England and Wales it is mandatory to register poultry or other kept birds by 1 October 2024. This includes any birds you keep as pets. The threshold for mandatory registration has been reduced from 50 birds to 1, which means all poultry and captive bird keepers will be legally required to register their birds.

❗️You’re breaking the law if you do not register.❗️

You do not need to register psittaciformes or passeriformes (such as budgies, parrots, cockatiels and finches) if they are both:

🦜 fully housed in a dwelling (your home or another indoor structure) AND
🦜kept indoors at all times with no access to outdoor spaces.

By registering:

the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) will contact you with updates and guidance if there’s a disease outbreak (such as bird flu) in your area

you’ll help prevent the spread of disease and protect all kept birds, including back yard flocks

Poultry keepers will be required to review their poultry register entry annually to ensure their details are up to date.

Register to keep up to 49 birds, including any you’re keeping as pets.

Meet Honey 🍯

Honey was here for her laparoscopic spay procedure. During a lap spay an ovariectomy (removal of both ovaries) is performed through 2 small incisions. The abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide gas and a small camera is used to visualise the inside of the abdomen. This is performed under a general anaesthetic.

Honey was a superstar all day... And look how beautiful she is ✨

Wishing you a speedy recovery Honey ✨

Meet king of the cat castle Macavity 👑

One of the ways we have earned our silver cat friendly clinic accreditation (Awarded by ISFM, the international society of feline medicine) is by having cat castles and places cats can hide and climb on in our cattery 😺

As you can see, Macavity loves the castle 👑
