A reminder for all our clients who's horses compete under British Horseracing Authority (BHA) Rules, including those running in Point-to-Points and pony races:

As of 1st January 2023 all horses must be compliant under the new vaccine schedule rules, which have been brought in to better protect the racehorse population.

All horses must now have received a booster within the 6 months prior to January 1st 2023 and must continue to have influenza boosters no more than 6 calendar months apart in order to remain compliant.

Horses that are non-compliant (ie those that have not had either their primary course or a booster vaccination between 1st July and 1st January 2023) will need to re-start their vaccine course and will not be allowed to run until they have had had the first 2 parts (plus 7 clear days) of their primary course.

Horses that compete under the FEI/ British Equestrian/ Pony Club rules are unaffected, though we still advise 6-monthly influenza vaccines for best protection against infection.

If you have any question regarding your horse's vaccinations, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We have sadly had a number of confirmed cases of Atypical Myopathy over the past few weeks. Whilst usually very rare, sycamore toxicity is a rapidly fatal condition in horses with those being most at risk being smaller ponies and youngstock. We remind owners to be vigilant and ensure horses are excluded from grazing areas where seeds and acorns can potentially fall and be watchful of signs of toxicity.

BEVA is urging owners to keep their horses safe from the seasonal risks of grazing around oak and sycamore trees, following a spate of veterinary cases needing urgent treatment after the ingestion of toxic seeds.

For the past week, vets Jennifer and Oliver were honoured to have been posted down in Windsor supporting the Thames Valley Police Mounted Section as they conducted patrols, night rehearsals and flanked the funeral procession, which was watched by a reported 5.2 billion people; that’s 62% of the World’s population!

We are immensely proud of the horses and officers carrying out their duties, with a particular mention to PH Aurora who led the entire procession under Sergeant Astley. This is due to be Aurora’s last major operation before enjoying retirement, having been with the police since 2015.

Happy Foal Friday! 🐴

Mary-Anne foaled this adorable, purebred Shire foal early yesterday morning. Oliver treated her for retained foetal membranes as the placenta had not been passed within 6 hours of her foaling.

Treatment for a retained placenta needs to be started promptly to prevent serious complications for the mare, such as sepsis and laminitis. It usually involves repeated doses of oxytocin, anti-inflammatories, antibiotics and large-volume lavage of the uterus.

If your mare hasn't passed the placenta within 3 hours of foaling you should let us know.

Both mare and foal are now doing very well!

🇬🇧 Badminton Day 1 🇮🇪

Keep an eye out for Fallulah (Fiedertanz x Devona), made at EVR by Jennifer Harbison for her breeders Ian Wills and Michael Morris.

Having been produced in her early career by Ian (pictured), Fallulah was successfully competed at CCI4* by Emily Philp prior to being sold. She is now the ride of Padraig McCarthy, who finished 17th on her at Étoiles de Pau last year.

Fallulah is 4th to run the dressage this morning at 9:38am. Best of luck from all of us at EVR! 🐎

Oliver had the pleasure of checking him (and mare) over today and they're both doing great. We were big fans of him in his rug and just had to share!

🌱Laminitis Awareness🌱

It's that time of year again that we start thinking about our horses and ponies that may be at greater risk of developing laminitis.

Did you know over 90% of laminitis is due to an underlying endocrinological (hormonal) cause?

Early diagnosis is important to ensure correct management and medication if needed to reduce the risk of laminitis and other associated symptoms.

We have teamed up with Care About Cushings to offer free ACTH lab fees for first-time screening tests (visit fee still applies). Contact us to find out more and check your eligibility!

🚨WOUND ALERT🚨

Horses can do the silliest things! This patient recently got himself caught on some fencing and lacerated his upper eyelid. Thankfully his cornea was unharmed but did require some stitches by vet Oliver.
Safe to say it is looking much better now and he had a lucky escape and is making a full recovery!

Lovely to see some of our clients out competing over the weekend, we’d love to see more of your successes!

Lately vet Oliver and farrier Liam have been helping the very special Fifi the dwarf Shetland who has some unique orthopaedic challenges. We love these photos of her having a set of Imprint shoes put on to help support her. These shoes can be specially moulded to the shape of her hooves and are light weight so she can get moving again! Check out the video of her now in the comments below ⬇️
