🐦🦔 Our lovely receptionist, Sue, has been very busy at her wildlife rescue, Born to be Wild, recently!

Her latest patient is this beautiful young kestrel. You may like to follow her progress on her page/group tagged below...

Kestrels are the second most common bird of prey in the UK, behind the buzzard. We are thrilled to be able to share a little insight into this little one's journey before it is released back into the wild ♥️

🩸 This week we welcomed Sydney into practice to donate some blood, which saved a seriously unwell cat's life!🩸

As it's World Blood Donor Day, it's the perfect opportunity to raise awareness of pet blood donations.

Cats may need blood for a variety of reasons. Most commonly in cats, blood donations are used in cases of severe anaemia resulting in the need for a life-saving blood transfusion. Parts of the blood (such as the plasma) are also often required for the management of certain conditions too.

♥️ In this case, Sydney was our lifesaver and as you can see, was home shortly after enjoying some home comforts! Well done, Sydney 🐱

Whilst allergies are a year-round problem, pets often show signs of issues as we move from spring to summer due to the seasonal changes.

➡️ These are the ‘tell tail’ signs to look out for that your pet may be feeling uncomfortable. If you spot your four-legged friend showing any of these symptoms, get in touch with our team.

Cricket, Beetle and Midge - the 3 musketeers defying the odds 🐱 ♥️

These lovely kittens are only 9 days old and came to our team from the Blue Cross, as their mother sadly passed away.

Being so young, they require around-the-clock care from our foster nurse. They are bottle-fed every 2-3 hours, even throughout the night and also rely on our nurse to stimulate them to go to the toilet.

Their next milestone will be opening their eyes which we hope will happen within the next 5 days.

We can't wait to share their journey with you as they grow and develop...stay tuned!

Say hello to our lovely receptionist, Sue, and this beautiful Goldcrest chick she is rehabilitating! 🐦♥️

In addition to working with us, in her spare time, Sue runs Born to be Wild., where she rescues and rehabilitates Bude's local wildlife when they are most in need. We couldn't think of a better way to celebrate Garden Wildlife Week than to share some of her amazing work in action.

This little one has grown quite close to Sue already, keeping her company at the front desk!

❓ Did you know?
The Goldcrest is the UK's smallest bird!

Next time you visit our practice, take a look at our feature wall where many of the wonderful animals Sue has rehabilitated are proudly framed!

It’s National BBQ Week and the perfect time for us, as vets, to highlight the common dangers BBQs pose to our pets 🌽🍔🌭

With the smell of burgers and sausages, they won’t need much encouragement to join you outside. Here are the most common dangers which result in a trip to see us!

⚠️ Fatty food and animal bones: Overindulging can cause upset tummies and pancreatitis, while bones can splinter and cause serious issues if eaten
⚠️Corn on the cob: Ofen becomes lodged in the digestive tract
⚠️Sharp skewers: Often splinter in mouths, cause tears and/or impale mouths
⚠️Hot grills and sunburn: Ensure pets are never left unsupervised. The delicious scents may get the better of them!

Top tip? Keep them entertained with their own treat or favourite toy.

It’s Garden Wildlife Week and we would love to know what animals you spot!

⤵️ Comment below & post your pictures if you manage to get a snap.

At this time of year, wild animals often struggle with the heat. If you’d like to know how to help them, here are our top tips!

💧 Water: Leave a water source in an open space and low to the ground. You may even like to put in little rocks and stones to help insects have a drink. This will help a wide range of species stay hydrated.
🥜 Food: For birds, fill your bird feeders. For hedgehogs, consider leaving some wet dog food or hedgehog-specific food out overnight when it’s cool.
🏡 Shelter! A little pile of sticks and overgrown grass not only provides shelter but attracts insects which can be a food source for many species

🏖️ We are lucky to live in one of the UK's finest holiday destinations!

Pristine coastlines, sandy beaches and rolling hills. There is nothing quite like seeing our four-legged friend sinking their paws into the sand and running towards the waves.

Unsurprisingly, dogs who love to swim in the sea often find themselves feeling a little under the weather shortly after. When a dog ingests an excessive amount of salt (such as gulping mouthfuls of seawater when catching a toy), the cells inside their body release water to dilute the salt content. The resulting symptoms can be:
⚠️ Excessive urination
⚠️ Extreme thirst
⚠️ Confusion
⚠️ Lethargy
⚠️ Diarrhoea
⚠️ Vomiting
⚠️ Nausea
⚠️ Odd behaviour
⚠️ Muscle spasms
⚠️ Seizures
⚠️ Death (in extreme cases)

If your pet is showing any of these signs, give us a call for some advice.

Top tip? Take a bottle of fresh water with you, ensure your pet regularly has a drink and stick to playing fetch on the sand!

Did you know it’s National Smile Month? So, to keep our four-legged friends happy, healthy - and smiling! - let’s talk about their dental health!

Isn't bad breath just normal for pets?

That's a question we often get asked, and the simple answer is no, bad breath isn't normal for our four-legged friends; they're no different to us in that respect! Bad breath - or halitosis - is caused by chemicals produced by the bacteria associated with periodontal disease (where the tissues surrounding the teeth become infected and inflamed). Left untreated, the infection can spread deeper into the tooth socket and destroy the bone, causing chronic pain and severe discomfort. We all know how painful problems with our teeth can be!

Bad breath is an early warning sign, so if you've noticed this with your furry family member, or you’re worried about their teeth or dental health in general, book an appointment with our team for a check-up and we can guide you on the next steps.

Did you know your dog could become infected with lungworm, simply from picking up a discarded toy in the garden with a slug or snail trail over it? Or from drinking from an outdoor water bowl?

Lungworm affects dogs and cats but is more common in our canine companions. Dogs can get lungworm from eating larvae found in infected slugs, snails and frogs, so it’s important to be vigilant of areas where your pet may be at risk, and to know the signs of lungworm so that it can be diagnosed and treated promptly.

Speak to our team if you’re worried about your pet or want to discuss a routine lungworm prevention plan. We’re here to help!

Is something bugging your pet?

Ectoparasites (parasites that live outside the body, such as fleas and ticks) are a year-round problem for our pets. So, to keep your furry friends comfortable, preventative care is key - and it’s easy to keep on top of with our Tamar Active Pet Health Club, where routine treatment is included - take a look at our website to find out more > https://tamarvets.co.uk/tamar-vets-pet-health-club/

In addition, regularly check over your pet’s body for signs of sore skin, bald patches, flea dirt (little black specks), adult fleas and ticks. Spotted signs of a problem? Contact our team for guidance on treatment and a preventative care plan to suit your pet.

We are a proudly independent veterinary practice, and plan to stay as such. So, what does that mean for you and your pets?

> Your pet’s welfare is at the heart of everything we do. We make decisions and tailor treatments based on your pet’s needs, rather than being restricted by guidelines (as can be the case in corporate practices)

> We provide our own emergency out-of-hours service, so we’ll always be there when you need us most. You won’t need to travel long distances at critical times, and you’ll see a familiar face, whatever the time, day or night

> Our team is highly trained and continues to develop their skillset. Complex cases can often be seen at our practice, negating the need for referrals

> We offer Tamar Active Pet Health Club, saving you money and providing peace of mind that all of your pet’s preventative healthcare is taken care of

> We want to get to know you and your pets. We want to be the practice you trust with the care of your beloved family members, from the first day they walk through our doors to the last

Our pets are family. We know yours are too.
