February is Responsible Pet Owners Month! 🐾💚

At Builth Vets, we believe responsible pet ownership goes beyond just feeding and walking your pet—it’s about committing to their long-term health, happiness, and well-being. Being a responsible pet owner means providing proper care, scheduling regular check-ups, and making informed decisions that enhance your pet’s quality of life.

This month, let’s celebrate the responsibility we embrace when we welcome pets into our homes. It’s a lifelong commitment, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.

To help you keep your pet healthy, we’re offering FREE health checks with our nurses throughout February! It’s the perfect opportunity to ensure your pet is ready for the year ahead and in tip-top shape.

Mind Your Head 🚜🌾

At Builth Vets, we’re proud to support the Mind Your Head campaign, running from 10th-14th February. This important initiative, led by the Farm Safety Foundation – Yellow Wellies, aims to raise awareness about mental health in the farming community.

The statistics are concerning—95% of UK farmers under 40 consider poor mental health one of the biggest hidden challenges facing the industry today. The pressures of farming can take a serious toll on mental wellbeing, and it’s crucial to break the stigma surrounding these issues.

The Mind Your Head campaign encourages open conversations about mental health, helping to create a supportive environment for farmers. By talking about mental health, we can help reduce the impact it has on both personal lives and farm safety.

At Builth Vets, we care about the wellbeing of the entire farming community, not just your animals. If you’re a farmer, we urge you to check out the resources provided by Yellow Wellies, and start the conversation about mental health on your farm.

Important Avian Influenza Alert – Protect Your Birds 🦠🐦

As of now, an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone is in place across Great Britain. If you own poultry, even just pet chickens, or other captive birds—including game birds—you must take immediate action to improve your biosecurity and reduce the risk of disease spread.

There have been confirmed cases of avian influenza across Wales, and it's crucial to take the necessary steps to protect your birds from this dangerous disease.

What You Need to Do:

Strict Biosecurity: Ensure your birds are kept in secure enclosures, away from wild birds.

Monitor for Symptoms: Look out for signs of illness, such as sudden deaths, respiratory distress, or swelling.

Report Suspected Cases: If you suspect avian influenza, contact the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) immediately.

For more details on how to prevent the spread of avian influenza and protect your flock, visit the official government guidance here: https://www.gov.uk/bird-flu

The declaration is accessed via the links below, or alternatively, you can ask for an emailed or physical copy at our practice.

🎉National Fun Day At Work 🎉

Yesterday at Builth Vets, we had an amazing time celebrating National Fun Day at Work! The team got to enjoy some fun moments with our adorable staff pets, sharing treats, laughter, and plenty of tail wags. Fridays are always super busy, so not everyone had time for a photo, but we made sure everyone had a great time. It was the perfect chance to take a breather and enjoy some lighthearted moments together. 💚

Meet Solovey, a beautiful Bengal cat who came to us at 11 months old when his owner noticed he was walking oddly and struggling to jump. After a thorough examination and X-rays, we discovered that Solovey had bilateral medially luxating patellae, a condition where the kneecaps slip out of place.

To treat this, a specialist surgeon performed a procedure to place Ridgestop™ implants on the medial trochlear ridge of both of Solovey’s knees. This relatively new treatment is particularly effective for cats with luxating patellae.

Post-surgery, Solovey's recovery was managed by Katie, who assisted with both surgeries. Once he was ready, he began hydrotherapy to help build muscle and get back to his usual, energetic self.

We're thrilled to see Solovey back to his playful, Bengal ways!

🚨 WARNING FOR DOG OWNERS - HAZARDOUS DOG CHEWS 🚨

The Food Standards Agency has issued a warning about 'Barkoo' and 'Chrisco' dog chews, which may be linked to serious health issues in dogs, including aggression, seizures, and other dangerous symptoms. While no cases have been reported in the UK, we strongly advise that you STOP using these chews immediately.

If your dog shows any of the following symptoms, please contact us at 01982 553271 as soon as possible:

Aggression or sudden behavioural changes
Seizures or fits
Panic attacks or spasms
Unexplained lethargy or distress

For more information, please visit the Food Standards Agency website:

https://www.food.gov.uk/news-alerts/news/precautionary-advice-issued-to-pet-owners-on-dog-chews-linked-to-illness

Warning for dog owners

The Food Standards Agency are advising dog owners not to feed their pets specific dog chews from China following concerns from the European Union (EU) of a possible link to serious behavioural changes.

The affected products include 'Barkoo' chews and 'Chrisco' chews. A full list of products can be found here: https://www.food.gov.uk/news-alerts/news/precautionary-advice-issued-to-pet-owners-on-dog-chews-linked-to-illness

Reports from the EU suggest that these products have been potentially linked to dogs experiencing what is known as ‘werewolf syndrome’. Symptoms include panic attacks, aggression, spasms, epileptic fits and in some cases death. There is no confirmed distribution of the chews to the UK and no cases have been detected in the UK.

If you are a dog owner and you have any of these products, please cease feeding your dogs these chews immediately. If your dog is unwell and has been fed any of the dog chews listed, you should seek veterinary advice and provide detailed information to the vet about the foods and treats your dog has been fed.

If you are a vet who suspects any cases associated with dog chews, you can report them through the Animal and Plant Health Agency’s (APHA) Small Animal Surveillance: http://apha.defra.gov.uk/vet-gateway/surveillance/seg/Small-animal.htm

Winter Pet Care Tips 🐾❄️

Although the weather seems to be warming, remember that winter hazards still exist for your pets:

Salt & Grit: Wash your pet’s paws after walks to remove irritants. Use paw butter for added protection.

Snowy Paws: Trim hair between pads to reduce snow buildup. Soak paws in warm water after snowy walks.

Antifreeze & De-Icer: Keep away from pets—highly toxic if ingested. Clean up spills immediately.

Shelter: Keep pets indoors during harsh weather. If your cat goes outside, ensure they have access to warmth.

Car Safety: Check under the bonnet for cats seeking warmth before starting your engine.

Visibility: Use LED collars, hi-vis leads, and carry a torch for safe, visible walks.

Extra Warmth: Short-haired, puppies, or senior dogs may need coats in cold weather.

Stay Active: Adjust feeding for less exercise in winter. Keep walks safe on icy surfaces.

Frozen Water: Keep dogs on a lead near frozen ponds to avoid accidents.

Stay safe and warm this winter! ❤️
