Why cruciates fail
More about the Cranial Cruciate Ligament . . . How and why does it fail?
Two main reasons:
💥 Sudden trauma - such as trapping a foot in a 🐇 rabbit hole when running at speed 💨
💥 Degenerative disease - the diseased ligament is progressively weakened by everyday life
What causes degenerative cruciate ligament disease?
This is a good question and there is no definitive answer. There are some predisposing factors:
⚠️ Breed - some breeds appear to be predisposed to cruciate disease, so there may be a genetic component to the risk, these include: retrievers, west highland terriers, boxers and rottweilers.
⚠️ Conformation - or how your dog is structured. Those with an upright stance or bowing of the hindlimbs are at greater risk
⚠️ Body weight - this appears to be a risk factor as overweight dogs are over presented in those dogs with cruciate failure
Signs of cruciate ligament injury:
🩹 Limping/ not weight bearing on one of the hind limbs
🩹 Pain in the affected leg - particularly on rising
🩹 Swelling in the knee joint
🩹 Stiffness after resting or worse after exercise
🩹 Reluctance to exercise, to jump, play - decreased activity
🩹 Muscle loss on the affected leg
Symptoms are not always obvious to owners as most dogs are stoic and do not show pain
💭 If you think your dog may be in pain, then consult a veterinary professional and if appropriate hydrotherapy may be suggested.

What is your dog's cruciate ligament and why is it important?
The cruciate ligament:
🐾 Stabilises the dog's knee ("stifle")
🐾 Prevents excessive movements such as over-extension of the joint
🐾 Limits rotational movement
What happens if it ruptures?
🐾 The knee becomes unstable and the joint becomes painful and inflamed
🐾 The meniscus (the shock absorber between the bones) can become damaged
🐾 Osteoarthritis forms and often becomes an issue in later life
Treatment can be surgery or in some cases conservative management. For either option, hydrotherapy is a paw-some aid 😉.
👍 The benefits of hydrotherapy include:
➡️ Pre and post operative hydrotherapy helps to improve muscle tone and speed up recovery
➡️ Protection of the contralateral limb
➡️ Providing pain relief
➡️ Building muscle to support the joints
➡️ Encouraging increased range of movement
➡️ Helping slow development of osteoarthritis

⁉️🙋♀️Does hydrotherapy really help? Or is it just a waste of time?
Hydrotherapy helps to manage symptoms of conditions as diverse as arthritis to spinal strokes, patella luxation to IVDD. It provides a safe and effective way to improve your dog’s quality of life.
1. Joint-Friendly Exercise
Hydrotherapy utilises the buoyancy of the water to support your dog's weight, reducing joint stress and encouraging increased range of movement, making it an ideal exercise for arthritic dogs, allowing them to stay active without worsening their condition.
2. Pain Relief and Reduced Inflammation
The warmth of the water soothes aching joints and muscles. The gentle heat relaxes tight muscles, reduces stiffness, and decreases inflammation, providing natural pain relief.
3. Improved Mobility and Strength
The resistance of the water strengthens muscles around the joints, enhancing stability and mobility. This is crucial for dogs with orthopaedic conditions, helping them move more freely and comfortably.
4. Controlled Environment
Hydrotherapy offers a controlled environment with trained professionals. Experts tailor exercises to your dog's specific needs, ensuring a safe and effective workout.
Benefits of Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy can significantly improve your dog’s life by managing painful symptoms and enhancing overall well-being. The controlled, supportive environment ensures your dog receives the best care possible.
It offers a lifeline for dogs with a variety of conditions, providing a therapeutic, low-impact exercise that promotes health and happiness.

Water enhances proprioception, or body awareness, in several ways: 🧠🌀 Resistance and Buoyancy: Water resistance provides gentle, continuous pressure on the body, prompting dogs to adjust their movements and positions. This resistance helps them become more aware of how their bodies move and respond to different stimuli.🐾 Controlled Movements: The buoyancy of water supports the dog’s body, allowing for slower, more controlled movements. This support enables dogs to focus on coordinating their limbs and balance without the fear of falling or straining their joints.🌟 Sensory Feedback: Water provides constant sensory feedback through pressure and temperature. This feedback helps dogs to fine-tune their motor skills, improving their ability to control their movements and enhancing overall coordination #hydrotherapypool #caninerehabilitation #dogsofbrighton #dogsofsussex #caninehydrotherapy #woozelbearsbh #dogsofbrightonandhove #proprioception #dm #degenerativediscdisease #ivdd #degenerativemyelopathy

✋Let’s talk about … 🗣️ Conservative management of Elbow Dysplasia 💪
A brief recap - Elbow dysplasia is abnormal development of the joint that cannot be reversed.
All dogs with ED will get arthritis, with or without surgery.
👍 What can you do to slow the onset of arthritis and conservatively manage ED? 🤔
1️⃣ WEIGHT CONTROL - the single most effective and cheapest measure to help conservatively manage ED.
2️⃣ Exercise and home environment - slippy floors, jumping off furniture or out of the car, chasing balls 🥎 , turning sharply at high speed - can all contribute to a flare up resulting in fore limb lameness
3️⃣ Hydrotherapy 💦 - helps build muscle to support the elbow without overloading the joint. Also a great form of exercise and weight control
4️⃣ Dietary supplements - glucosamine, chondroitin, omega-3 fatty acids, green lipped muscle - can help with stiffness and joint pain
5️⃣ Pain relief - prescription medication 💊 from your vet and complementary therapies such as acupuncture, laser therapy, massage therapy - can all be used as and when needed, or regularly, depending on the stage of the condition.

More about elbow dysplasia… 🦾
Last month we posted about the different conditions covered by the ☂️ umbrella term “elbow dysplasia”.
The condition results from abnormal development, so it is not possible to reverse the process and make the joint normal.
The most common age for diagnosis is between 6 to 10 months 😢. Alternatively, it might go undetected until middle age or older, when the dogs have advanced arthritis.
⚠️ What are the signs to look out for? 👀
🐾 Lameness on one or both front legs. This can appear to come and go.
🐾 Stiffness when getting up after a rest
🐾 Feet of the front limbs turned outward
🐾 Reluctance or awkwardness going downstairs, as the increased pressure makes the elbows sore.
🤔 Initial diagnosis is usually done by veterinary examination and then confirmed with imaging, or in some cases, keyhole surgery (arthroscopy).
Early detection is key 🔑.
Treatment can be surgery or in some cases conservative management. For either option, hydrotherapy is a paw-some aid 😉.
👍 The benefits of hydrotherapy include:
➡️ Allowing dog to exercise without pressure on elbows
➡️ Helping slow development of osteoarthritis
➡️ Providing pain relief
➡️ Building muscle to support the joints
➡️ Encouraging increased range of movement
