⛓️‍💥 Ruptured cruciate? Boost your dog’s recovery with hydrotherapy . . . ❓

🩹 Diagnosis is made through a physical exam, often followed by x-rays and/or further imaging.

If found to be damaged the options are influenced by e.g. the dog's size, age, breed, energy levels, and the degree of damage to the cruciate.

There are two options:
1️⃣ Surgery - most dogs with CCL failure will experience ongoing pain and instability in the knee which needs surgical intervention to improve their quality of life. There are a variety of surgical techniques that can be used, and the most appropriate is chosen for each dog.

2️⃣ Conservative management - more suitable for some small breed dogs, small tears rather than a full rupture of the ligament, some older dogs and those with low energy levels
Conservative management involves:
🐾restricting activity levels
🐾weight management
🐾pain relief including laser therapy
🐾physiotherapy
🐾hydrotherapy
These all work together to increase muscle around the joint, to provide support and reduce reliance on the ligament.

💦 How does hydrotherapy help?
- pre-operative hydrotherapy helps condition the muscles, ready for the post-op rehabilitation
- if conservative management is undertaken, hydrotherapy:
➡️ helps build muscle to support the affected joint
➡️ reduced weight bearing helps to decrease pressure on the affected joint, allowing more exercise with a reduced risk of flare up
➡️ the support of the water reduces risk of falling and causing further injury
➡️ the resistance of the water works the muscles harder, increasing strength more quickly than on land
➡️ encourages an increased range of movement
➡️ the warm water helps to increase circulation, reducing pain and inflammation

🐾 Grooming 101: Discover how grooming enhances your pup's wellbeing🐾

Is it time for your furry friend to have a salon day? 🛁✂️ Regular grooming is not just about looking fabulous; it's essential for your dog's overall health and happiness! Here’s what you should know before bringing your pup in for a spa day:

✨ 1. Brush Up Beforehand: A quick brush at home helps remove tangles and reduces shedding, making the salon session smoother!

✨ 2. Know Your Dog's Coat Type: Every dog has unique grooming needs. Discuss with your groomer the best approach for your dog's coat type – whether it’s short, curly, or fluffy.

✨ 3. Trim Those Nails: Regular nail trims prevent discomfort and keep those paws healthy. Your groomer can handle this, but if you're doing it at home, be sure to use proper tools!

✨ 4. Freshen Up with a Bath: A warm bath with dog-safe shampoo helps remove dirt, allergens, and dead skin. Your groomer will choose the best products for your dog’s skin and coat type.

✨ 5. Check Ears and Teeth: Regular ear cleaning prevents infections, while good oral hygiene is vital for preventing dental issues.

✨ 6. Stay Calm and Relaxed: Your energy affects your dog! A calm demeanour helps them feel safe and relaxed during their grooming session.

✨ 7. Trust Your Groomer: Our professional groomers are here to ensure your pup feels comfortable, happy, and looks their best! Don’t hesitate to ask questions or discuss any concerns you might have.

Book your dog’s grooming appointment today and let’s pamper your pooch the way they deserve! 🐶❤️

More about the Cranial Cruciate Ligament . . . How and why does it fail?

Two main reasons:
💥 Sudden trauma - such as trapping a foot in a 🐇 rabbit hole when running at speed 💨
💥 Degenerative disease - the diseased ligament is progressively weakened by everyday life

What causes degenerative cruciate ligament disease?
This is a good question and there is no definitive answer. There are some predisposing factors:

⚠️ Breed - some breeds appear to be predisposed to cruciate disease, so there may be a genetic component to the risk, these include: retrievers, west highland terriers, boxers and rottweilers.

⚠️ Conformation - or how your dog is structured. Those with an upright stance or bowing of the hindlimbs are at greater risk

⚠️ Body weight - this appears to be a risk factor as overweight dogs are over presented in those dogs with cruciate failure

Signs of cruciate ligament injury:
🩹 Limping/ not weight bearing on one of the hind limbs
🩹 Pain in the affected leg - particularly on rising
🩹 Swelling in the knee joint
🩹 Stiffness after resting or worse after exercise
🩹 Reluctance to exercise, to jump, play - decreased activity
🩹 Muscle loss on the affected leg

Symptoms are not always obvious to owners as most dogs are stoic and do not show pain

💭 If you think your dog may be in pain, then consult a veterinary professional and if appropriate hydrotherapy may be suggested.

GOT A PUPPY? Then listen up - this is for you!

Getting your puppy accustomed to grooming at an early stage is crucial to maintaining their future health and happiness 😊

As soon as they are fully vaccinated 🩼, they can visit the salon and get used to the equipment, people and environment.

Prior to this, you can help the process by getting them used to touch – around their ears 👂, paws 🐾, mouth 👄, eyes 👀 – everywhere!

At 12-16 weeks it’s worth taking them for a “ Puppy Intro" at a professional grooming salon, to get them used to the experience.

At Woozelbears, we offer a Puppy Introductory Package, to encourage owners to start a regular grooming routine for their wee furry friend! The package includes a free puppy intro followed by three discounted sessions - exact prices dependent on the size of your pooch!

At the first session, your pup is introduced to the bath 🛁, for a relaxing wash in puppy shampoo; followed by the dryer and a brush, to get them used to being handled all over. It usually involves plenty of treats and playtime, to ensure a positive, fun experience.

At the future sessions, they are introduced to:
• The sights and sounds of the salon 🔉🔔💥
• Nail clipping 💅
• Gentle ear cleaning, with anti-bacterial ear wash 🧼
• Trim around eyes, feet and bottom 👁️

After each session, your groomer will talk to you about how your pup has got on, their new experiences and let you know of anything they were not so comfortable with. At the final session, they will advise how often pup should come in for their future grooms to keep them knot and matt free!

🐾 Keep Your Pup’s Paws in Perfect Shape with the Andis Nail Grinder! 🐾

🐶✨ Keeping our furry friends' nails trimmed is super important, but it can be a bit tricky (and sometimes nerve-wracking for your pup) with traditional clippers. That’s why we suggest for our more anxious pups that we use the Andis Nail Grinder, and it’s been a total game-changer!

Why we love it:

🔹 Gentle on Nails: The Andis Nail Grinder offers a smooth, pain-free experience for your dog, reducing the risk of over-cutting or causing discomfort.

🔹Quiet Operation: This grinder is super quiet, so it won’t startle your pet during grooming sessions.

🔹 Multiple Speed Options: Whether your dog has thick nails or thin, the adjustable speed settings allow you to find the perfect level for a quick and safe trim.

If your pooch has been struggling with nail trims, then we highly recommend getting them booked in and giving the Andis Nail Grinder a try. Your pup will thank you! 🐕💖

What is your dog's cruciate ligament and why is it important?

The cruciate ligament:
🐾 Stabilises the dog's knee ("stifle")
🐾 Prevents excessive movements such as over-extension of the joint
🐾 Limits rotational movement

What happens if it ruptures?
🐾 The knee becomes unstable and the joint becomes painful and inflamed
🐾 The meniscus (the shock absorber between the bones) can become damaged
🐾 Osteoarthritis forms and often becomes an issue in later life

Treatment can be surgery or in some cases conservative management. For either option, hydrotherapy is a paw-some aid 😉.

👍 The benefits of hydrotherapy include:
➡️ Pre and post operative hydrotherapy helps to improve muscle tone and speed up recovery
➡️ Protection of the contralateral limb
➡️ Providing pain relief
➡️ Building muscle to support the joints
➡️ Encouraging increased range of movement
➡️ Helping slow development of osteoarthritis

🐾"Trimmed paw pads = a happier, healthier pup! 🐾❤️

Find out why doggy pads and regular shaving are Crucial for Your Pup's Well-being! 🐾

If you're like us, your fur babies are a big part of your family. That's why we wanted to share some important tips about doggy pads and the significance of keeping them shaved. 🌟🐶💕

Doggy pads (paw pads) are the cushions on your dog's feet, and they play a vital role in their health and comfort. Here's why they're essential:

🐾 Protection: They provide a barrier against rough surfaces, heat, and cold, preventing injuries.

🐾 Traction: Pads help your pup maintain a good grip on slippery surfaces, reducing the risk of falls and injuries.

🐾 Shock Absorption: They act as shock absorbers, especially when your dog is running or jumping, reducing strain on their joints.

Regularly shaving or trimming the fur around your dog's pads is just as important. Here’s why:

🐶 Prevent Matting: Long hair around the pads can mat and tangle, causing discomfort and potential infections.

🐶 Better Hygiene: Shaving helps keep dirt, debris, and moisture from getting trapped, reducing the risk of bacterial and fungal infections.

🐶 Improved Grip: Without excess fur, your dog will have better traction, preventing slips and slides, especially on smooth surfaces.

🐶 Comfort: Shorter fur around the pads means your pup can walk more comfortably, without the annoyance of tangled or dirty fur.

Remember, a little grooming goes a long way in keeping your furry friend in tip-toe shape! . 🐕❤️

🐾 Is Your Groomer Being Nosey? Here’s Why We Ask the Questions We Do! 🐾

Have you ever wondered why your groomer asks so many questions about your furry friend? It might seem like we’re being a bit nosey, but there’s a really good reason for it! Our top priority is to ensure your pup has a stress-free and enjoyable grooming experience. Here’s why we ask the questions we do:

🌿🐶 Protect Your Pup: Check for Grass Seeds Regularly! 🐶🌿

Summer is here, and with our furry friends spending more time outdoors we are seeing more dogs in the Groom Room with grass seeds. So while they are enjoying the great weather, it's essential to be aware of the hidden dangers lurking in the grass. 🌞🌱

These tiny seeds can cause significant problems for our dogs if left unchecked. They can get stuck in their fur, paws, ears, and even eyes. Here’s why you should regularly check your dog for grass seeds:

❗ Pain and Discomfort: Grass seeds can embed themselves in your dog’s skin, causing painful abscesses and infections.

❗ Serious Health Risks: If a seed travels deeper into your dog’s body, it can lead to severe complications like internal infections and organ damage.

❗ Costly Vet Visits: Removing embedded grass seeds often requires veterinary intervention, which can be expensive and stressful for both you and your pet.

🕵️‍♀️ How to Check Your Dog:

🌱 Paws: Inspect between the toes and around the pads.
🌱Ears: Look inside and around the ears.
🌱Fur: Run your fingers through their coat, especially in long-haired breeds.
🌱Eyes and Nose: Check for any signs of irritation or discharge.

Take a few minutes after every walk to give your dog a thorough check. It can save them from unnecessary pain and keep those tails wagging happily! 🐾💖

Stay vigilant and enjoy the summer safely! 🌞🐾

🐾✨ Keep Your Pooch Looking Pawsitively Fabulous! ✨🐾

🐶❤️ Want to keep your dog looking their best in between grooming sessions? Regular visits to the groomer for a quick bath and tidy, and a nail trim can make a world of difference! Here’s why it’s worth the trip:

🛁 Bath & Tidy: A professional bath keeps your dog's coat shiny and clean, while a tidy-up ensures any pesky tangles and loose fur are taken care of. Plus, it helps reduce shedding and keeps your home cleaner!

💅 Nail Trim: Regular nail trims are essential for your dog’s health and comfort. Long nails can lead to discomfort and even injuries. A groomer can expertly trim them to the perfect length, making your dog more comfortable and happy.

✨ Benefits:

🐶 Maintains a fresh and clean appearance.
🐶 Prevents matting and tangles.
🐶 Keeps nails at a healthy length.
🐶 Reduces the amount of fur around your home.

Why wait for the next full groom? Treat your furry friend to a bath and tidy, and a nail trim in between grooming sessions. Your pup will feel great, look amazing, and you’ll love the results! 🌟🐕

15/06/2024

Why your groomer won't clip off your double coated dog.

As the weather warms up, the groomer parlour gets busier. Quite often we get asked to clip off a double coated dog to help make them cooler. In fact doing this will make it worse, exposing them to more heat and here's why.

🐾 Lets start with what is a double coat?
Literally what it says on the tin, the dog has two different types of coat on them. The outer guard coat, which is the shiny coat on top. The second coat is the undercoat, the soft denser coat. Some examples of breeds with a double coat are Collies, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and Pomeranians.

🐾 How does having a double coat help in the summer?
The guard coat help to reflect the suns rays away from the body, whilst a dry, tangle free undercoat traps a layer of cool air. When the coat is not compacted with too much undercoat excess body heat can escape.
A clipped coat won't have the protection against the sun and heat in the summer, preventing the dog to regulate their body temperature.

🐾 What can I do to help my double coated dog stay cool?
A well groomed double coat is the answer. If the coat is compacted with loose undercoat the excess body heat can't escape and they won't be able to insulate the layer of cool air.
Regular brushing and trips to the grooming parlour for a de-shed will help with this.
Imagine standing outside in the heat wearing a sweater under the shade of a tree. Brushing out the loose undercoat is the equivalent of taking off the sweater. Clipping the coat off is the equivalent of removing the shady tree, exposing yourself in the direct sun.

Thank you to groomerism for the infographic. It explains so well how the double coat works.
