IVDD cons maangement
๐พ Managing IVDD Conservatively in Dachshunds ๐พ
Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is a common condition in dachshunds due to their long backs and short legs.
Surgical intervention is often recommended, although conservative management can be an effective option.
๐ค What is Conservative Management?
Conservative treatment focuses on allowing the affected disc to heal naturally.
It involves rest, controlled activity as well as building muscle and improving proprioception and gait.
Key Components of Conservative Management:
โ
Strict Crate Rest: To minimize movement and prevent further injury.
โ
Pain Control: such as anti-inflammatories. ๐ก Laser therapy can also help.
โ
Hydrotherapy and physiotherapy: to build muscle and improve mobility.
โ
Weight Management: Maintaining an ideal weight reduces strain on the spine.
โ
Supportive Care: Use of harnesses instead of collars and ramps instead of stairs.
Conservative management requires patience, consistency, and dedication, but many dachshunds recover well with this approach.

Cruciate Ligament Disease
Surgery or Conservative Management?
Not all pet parents have the money or inclination to put their dogs through surgery if the cruciate ligament shows signs of degeneration or injury.
Is there an alternative?
Yes, it includes:
๐พ Controlled exercise
๐พ Regular Laser therapy
๐พ Regular Hydrotherapy in an aquatic treadmill
๐พ Physiotherapy exercises, given by a qualified veterinary physiotherapist
๐พ NSAIDs

Speedy tour of laser
โHow does laser therapy help dogs with arthritis? ๐ค
1. Reduces Pain ๐
Laser therapy stimulates the release of endorphins, which are natural painkillers.
2. Decreases Inflammation ๐ค
The laser light reduces the production of inflammatory compounds, leading to decreased swelling and inflammation in the arthritic joints.
3. Improves Blood Flow ๐๏ธ
Laser therapy increases blood circulation, increasing delivery of oxygen and nutrients to damaged tissues, accelerating healing and reducing stiffness.
4. Enhances Tissue Repair ๐ฉน
The laser stimulates the production of energy for cells, boosting cellular activity and supporting the repair and regeneration of damaged tissues, such as cartilage, tendons, and ligaments in the joints.
5. Restores Mobility ๐บ๐ป
By reducing pain, inflammation, and stiffness, laser therapy helps improve mobility, which leads to better muscle tone and joint function.
6. Non-Invasive and Drug-Free ๐
Laser therapy is painless and does not require sedation or medication.

Obesity
๐พ Did you know excess fat can harm your dogโs joints?
Extra weight puts pressure on your pup's joints, especially their hips, knees, and spine. Those joints are then at increased risk of arthritis and mobility issues. ๐
BUT, it's not just the additional weight:
๐ฅ Fat cells release inflammatory chemicals that make joint pain and stiffness worse, creating a vicious cycle of discomfort and inactivity. This can lead to reduced mobility, more weight gain and reduced quality of life. ๐ข
Hydrotherapy can be an effective tool in managing obesity in your pooch. By allowing dogs to exercise in water ๐ฆ hydrotherapy reduces the strain on their joints while providing resistance that helps build muscle ๐ช and burn calories.
๐งฎ Regular sessions can improve cardiovascular health, increase metabolism, and promote weight loss, all while being gentle on the body. Hydrotherapy also helps improve flexibility and stamina, supporting long-term weight management in dogs.
๐๏ธ Managing weight from an early age means your dog is less likely to develop joint issues or heart disease. ๐๐

Why cruciates fail
More about the Cranial Cruciate Ligament . . . How and why does it fail?
Two main reasons:
๐ฅ Sudden trauma - such as trapping a foot in a ๐ rabbit hole when running at speed ๐จ
๐ฅ Degenerative disease - the diseased ligament is progressively weakened by everyday life
What causes degenerative cruciate ligament disease?
This is a good question and there is no definitive answer. There are some predisposing factors:
โ ๏ธ Breed - some breeds appear to be predisposed to cruciate disease, so there may be a genetic component to the risk, these include: retrievers, west highland terriers, boxers and rottweilers.
โ ๏ธ Conformation - or how your dog is structured. Those with an upright stance or bowing of the hindlimbs are at greater risk
โ ๏ธ Body weight - this appears to be a risk factor as overweight dogs are over presented in those dogs with cruciate failure
Signs of cruciate ligament injury:
๐ฉน Limping/ not weight bearing on one of the hind limbs
๐ฉน Pain in the affected leg - particularly on rising
๐ฉน Swelling in the knee joint
๐ฉน Stiffness after resting or worse after exercise
๐ฉน Reluctance to exercise, to jump, play - decreased activity
๐ฉน Muscle loss on the affected leg
Symptoms are not always obvious to owners as most dogs are stoic and do not show pain
๐ญ If you think your dog may be in pain, then consult a veterinary professional and if appropriate hydrotherapy may be suggested.

Cream Cheese
What is your dog's cruciate ligament and why is it important?
The cruciate ligament:
๐พ Stabilises the dog's knee ("stifle")
๐พ Prevents excessive movements such as over-extension of the joint
๐พ Limits rotational movement
What happens if it ruptures?
๐พ The knee becomes unstable and the joint becomes painful and inflamed
๐พ The meniscus (the shock absorber between the bones) can become damaged
๐พ Osteoarthritis forms and often becomes an issue in later life
Treatment can be surgery or in some cases conservative management. For either option, hydrotherapy is a paw-some aid ๐.
๐ The benefits of hydrotherapy include:
โก๏ธ Pre and post operative hydrotherapy helps to improve muscle tone and speed up recovery
โก๏ธ Protection of the contralateral limb
โก๏ธ Providing pain relief
โก๏ธ Building muscle to support the joints
โก๏ธ Encouraging increased range of movement
โก๏ธ Helping slow development of osteoarthritis

โ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธDoes hydrotherapy really help? Or is it just a waste of time?
Hydrotherapy helps to manage symptoms of conditions as diverse as arthritis to spinal strokes, patella luxation to IVDD. It provides a safe and effective way to improve your dogโs quality of life.
1. Joint-Friendly Exercise
Hydrotherapy utilises the buoyancy of the water to support your dog's weight, reducing joint stress and encouraging increased range of movement, making it an ideal exercise for arthritic dogs, allowing them to stay active without worsening their condition.
2. Pain Relief and Reduced Inflammation
The warmth of the water soothes aching joints and muscles. The gentle heat relaxes tight muscles, reduces stiffness, and decreases inflammation, providing natural pain relief.
3. Improved Mobility and Strength
The resistance of the water strengthens muscles around the joints, enhancing stability and mobility. This is crucial for dogs with orthopaedic conditions, helping them move more freely and comfortably.
4. Controlled Environment
Hydrotherapy offers a controlled environment with trained professionals. Experts tailor exercises to your dog's specific needs, ensuring a safe and effective workout.
Benefits of Hydrotherapy
Hydrotherapy can significantly improve your dogโs life by managing painful symptoms and enhancing overall well-being. The controlled, supportive environment ensures your dog receives the best care possible.
It offers a lifeline for dogs with a variety of conditions, providing a therapeutic, low-impact exercise that promotes health and happiness.
