Hurst Hedgehog Haven, Hedgehog Rescue. wanted to highlight the work of our veterinary professionals. We consider them our colleagues & their input is vital for the ethical welfare of the wild hedgehogs we rehabilitate.
Without them we could not treat pain, inflammation, injuries, infections & parasites.
A significant proportion of the funds we raise is spent on veterinary care, & your donations are a crucial part of this...so thank you from us all..& thank you Vets for Pets Burgess Hill , Heath Vets & Oathall vets.

This is Hobnob...his finder A has been monitoring him on garden cameras for a while so quickly noticed a leg injury. Our lovely vet at Vets for Pets Burgess Hill found & relocated his dislocated rear leg. Hopefully with rest, pain relief & anti inflammatories, he will be fit for release back to the wild soon.
This picture is from a 24/7 surveillance camera which allows us to monitor remotely to minimalise his stress levels.

It's and today we're celebrating one of our invertebrate , following yesterday, with Buglife's International Shutterbug, based in Bulgaria, Radoslav Valkov.

🐌 The Hairy Snail (Trochulus hispidus), is a small snail with a shell measuring about 6mm and as the name would suggest, its hairy. Just look at that shell! Hairs can become lost as these glorious gastropods move around and get older and loss of hairs can leave pronounced scars on their shells. Hairy Snails can be found across much of the UK and Europe and are even known as an introduced non-native species in eastern and central Canada and the north-eastern part of the United States; so a fairly global gastropod.

♻️ Most European land gastropods are thought to be non-specific herbivores or detritivores; they are amongst the recyclers of our natural world, a part of nature's clean-up crew. Detailed studies, including analysing snail poo, have shown that some gastropods have developed distinct food preferences. Additional studies have shown that juveniles of some species show significantly less dis-
crimination, when it comes to food, than their adult counterparts.

🌍 But what about our little Hairy Snail friend? Research suggests that Hairy Snails from different, geographical areas show variability in their diet, regardless of variation in available sources. Benefitting from its non-discriminatory feeding habits, allowing this species to occupy highly variable sites; from light forests, shrublands, cultivated areas, the rocky rubble of alpine pastures, road margins and even disturbed habitats.

🤎 Not only a but a master traveller and adaptor. Have you seen a Hairy Snail?

We are looking for a new rescue volunteer. Within the Mid Sussex area. We are an established hedgehog rehabilitation/ rescue charity. The volunteer would need a separate space with electricity and natural light so that they can care for hedgehogs. We would provide on going training and equipment. Although this is a volunteer position you would need to be committed. This would suit retired or semi retired person, you would need to drive have an interest in wildlife and a nursing back ground would be helpful. Please message Ann or call 07787515296.

Sports netting may seem harmless, but it can become a deadly trap for wildlife 🦊

Recently, we rescued a fox found tangled in a football goal in a garden in South London. He was tightly wound up in the goal net and was hanging in the air by his back leg. Our animal rescuer was able to cut the fox free and took him to South Essex Wildlife Hospital for a check over.

Fortunately this fox was uninjured, but many animals suffer serious injuries or worse after becoming trapped. You can help prevent this by always removing and storing sports netting after use and disposing of damaged netting responsibly 🥅

Hi everybody,

As the largest rescue on the North East Coast, we have had multiple calls and messages of concern for the wildlife during this tragic tanker collision incident near Hull.

An update for you all.
We have spoken with the RSPCA and the BDMLR who will keep us in the loop as this develops. An incident like this could change hourly so we really cant say what is going to happen. We have also spoken with Ren rescue, Wildthings, Cleethorpes and the Wildlife alliance - all of which are ready to help in the event of a potential major seabird rescue operation.

At the moment the 1st priority is of course human life. A number of organisations have to be involved with an incident like this ( a tier 3 emergency ) including emergency services, coastguard, coordinators from health and safety, public health, environmental health, to name some. They all need to do their jobs first.
Other factors have to be assessed also like tidal conditions which could indicate where this will spread to. Planes have to be used to assess the scale of spread too.

However, we can assure you all that there are protocols in place. One of these contingency plans is called the 'emergency services response plan' which is already in affect and being implemented.

A few years ago, we were invited to attend a protocol information session for such an event and these protocols still stand. In the event of a major oil spill, and for wildlife (birds especially) to be rescued and processed, an emergency triage tent would be put in place. This is where birds are transported to, processed, assessed, recorded , washed and if needed, euthanased. At the moment though for any wildlife service, we all have to sit tight and let the other emergency services do their jobs. But please be assured that all wildlife services up and down the coastline are prepared to be involved in some form.

It may be that nothing is set up for a large-scale rescue operation for a few days.

Right now, we are on standby and are preparing for involvement if required.

Thank you

🌻NORTH SEA INCIDENT UPDATE 🌻

After sitting in a meeting with some of the lead organisations dealing with the current incident involving 2 vessels in the north sea- I just wanted pop on and give a little update.

As it stands in this moment, the situation regarding any potential wildlife casualties is stable.
However, myself and other rescues up and down the country are on standby to assist the RSPCA in the event the current situation changes. I can't go into too much detail here but will update when I can.

A HUGE thank you to the organisations for giving up their time to update us on the current situation, and to my fellow rescues for being such amazing humans.

I also want to say that my thoughts and love go out to the crew of both vessels! What a terrible day for them!

Busy Sunday giving the hog cabin a paint job, I think you may be able to see it from space!🦔🫶🏼🤣🦄☀️😎💜Ax
