🐾🌞Here's our Lead Vet Emily with some advice for keeping your dogs safe in the heat 🐾🌞
As temperatures rise, it's important to remember that our furry friends need extra care to stay cool and safe. This is especially true for brachycephalic breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers, Boxers, and French Bulldogs. These breeds, with their flat faces and short noses, are more susceptible to heatstroke and breathing difficulties.
Here are some tips to help keep your pups comfortable and safe during hot weather:
1. **Stay Hydrated**: Always provide plenty of fresh, cool water for your dog. Consider adding ice cubes to their water bowl for an extra chill!
2. **Avoid Walks**: The pavement can get extremely hot and can burn your dog's paws. Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when it's cooler. Consider not walking them at all.
3. **Provide Shade**: Ensure your dog has access to shaded areas, whether you're at home or out and about.
4. **Never Leave Dogs in Cars**: Even with the windows cracked, cars can quickly become dangerously hot.
5. **Cool Down Techniques**: Use a damp cloth to gently cool your dog or provide a paddling pool for them to splash in.
6. **Watch for Signs of Heatstroke**: Heavy panting, excessive drooling, lethargy, and difficulty breathing are all red flags. If you notice these symptoms, seek veterinary care immediately.
Let’s work together to ensure all our beloved dogs stay happy and healthy this summer. If you have any questions or need more tips, feel free to reach out to us!
Stay cool and safe, everyone! 🐶❤️
