We will continue to provide care for your pets over the Christmas and New Year holiday period. Throughout the holidays, our team is here to help with consultations, vaccinations and routine procedures, or to order and pick up repeat medicines.

Tuesday 24th December - OPEN UNTIL 1PM then closed for emergencies only
Wednesday 25th December - CLOSED - emergencies only
Thursday 26th December - CLOSED - emergencies only

Wednesday 1st January 2025 - CLOSED - emergencies only

Repeat medication:

🎄🦌Christmas Repeat Medication 🦌🎄

Please remember to order any repeat prescriptions in time for Christmas. Although as a small business we are normally lucky enough to have a 24hr turnaround on meds, over Christmas we kindly ask all repeat medicines to be requested before Friday 20th December. This will ensure your pets will not go without any medications over the Christmas and New Year period. If you are due your next supply of repeat medication you can either call us or email us as usual. If you have any queries feel free to give reception a call.

🐾 Pet insurance 🐾

As a practice we recommend you consider insuring your pet for many reasons.

Most pets will unfortunately need treatment for an illness or injury at some point in their life and treatment can be expensive.

Pet insurance can give you peace of mind that you’ll be able to cover the costs of medical treatment should something happen to your pet, whether they be large one off bills or ongoing treatment plans. Insurance also allows you and your vet to make decisions based on what is best for your pet rather than what you are able to afford.

Claiming treatment costs through insurance can be confusing, lengthy and stressful, especially for those first time claims. So to remove the hassle for our clients we will do the whole process for you. In fact, we are one of the few vet practices not to charge a fee for this service. We also do not require you to front the bill yourself before claiming - leave the bill with us and we will let you know of any deductions to pay once the insurance claim is settled.

Remember not all pet insurance is the same so it is a good idea to check the cover provided - consider premiums, policy limits, exclusions (such as dentals/vaccines/neutering/cremation), routine deductions such as excesses and co-pay, length of cover, just to name a few.

As a general rule, we always recommend a policy with lifetime cover. Lifetime pet insurance is the most extensive pet insurance cover you can get for your cat or dog. As long as you keep renewing your policy, it’ll last for their whole life and pay out for every new condition up to the policy limits each year.
Lifetime pet insurance will also pay out for any injuries or illnesses related to ones you’ve previously claimed for that develop at a later date.

With temperatures due to drop very low over the next few weeks to months, we though this chart may be of use to pet owners.

For any pets kept outdoors such as guinea pigs/rabbits etc, if they cannot be brought inside, ensure they have a weatherproof cover for their home and lots of materials such as hay and bedding to burrow in.

This beautiful girl was found dumped in a wheelie bin! 😡Very luckily a kind member of the public heard her and brought her straight down to us at Black Rock. We nursed and bathed her swollen foot and wrapped it in a bandage. She will need bandage changing for the next few weeks and antibiotics to help with the infection. It is looking likely she will need the toe amputated if it doesn't improve in the next week, however the vet says her recovery is looking positive.
She is a young pullet and believed to be an 'Easter Egger'. She is so friendly and loves falling asleep during a cuddle with our Head Nurse Emma.
Our Head Vet Gareth is going to give her a loving forever home. Gareth's two daughters are especially excited to welcome her to their family!

🌟 CONGRATULATIONS 🏆

Massive congratulations to Ellie who last week graduated with a diploma in Veterinary Nursing from Hartpury University, and is now qualified as a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Registered Veterinary Nurse👩‍🎓🎉. Ellie has worked so hard on her diploma for the last 2 years, that she graduated with distinction!

Ellie joined the Black Rock Vets team in May 2022 as a receptionist, however given her aptitude and skills she very quickly progressed to student veterinary nurse, training and building her practical skills here at Black Rock Vets whilst studying at Hartpury University.

Ellie is an absolute credit to the practice. May this be just the start of a fantastic career!

A friendly reminder that if you are moving house or experiencing any changes please update your personal details with us.
This makes it much easier and quicker to access and confirm your details when needed, sometimes in emergency situations!
It is also a legal requirement to keep your pets microchips up to date with all changes of details.

If you are concerned you haven’t updated your pets details in a while and don’t have access to a microchip database we will be more than happy to see your pet, free of charge, to scan their chip and give you necessary details to make these changes.

Happy National Rabbit Day! 🐰🐰

We are proud to announce that last week we were again awarded a RWAF (Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund) Rabbit-Friendly Silver Practice - the highest award a non-hospital practice can receive. We are so pleased to see all of our hard work and research recognised through this award.

Black Rock Vets have been awarded this accreditation by proving to have a greater knowledge of rabbit care. RWAF’s specialist vet has assessed our staff, veterinary practice, standard procedures and continued training to award us as Rabbit Friendly Clinic.

This accreditation is only awarded to clinics that adhere to the RWAF’s high standards of rabbit veterinary care. We are committed to providing your rabbit with the best care possible and hope to reassure you of this by investing in the RWAF’s annual membership and assessments.

Our vet Gareth has a keen interest in rabbit care and has 3 bunnies of his own - Pretzel, HeiHei and Pua, who have very kindly posed for their photo 😍

Female border collie handed into us at Burnham on Sea. She is chipped but still registered to the breeder. Found in Mark by Riches cider farm. Please contact us on 01278786602. Proof of ownership (pictures etc) will be required and ID.
