This is your ten-day warning! If you live in England, make sure your cat is microchipped by June 10, as it will then be a legal requirement. 🚓

If you are a Pet Health Club member, microchipping is included in your membership, so please speak to your practice and get your cat booked in.

After 12 years at Oakmount we said farewell to our fabulous nurse Beth. As a team we have been incredibly lucky to watch Beth go from a student nurse herself to a qualified, supporting the new generation of nurses.
Beth has spent the last 12 years commuting from Liverpool on a daily basis, her dedication to Oakmount has shone through.
I’m sure we speak on behalf of all the clients and animals that have seen Beth over the years in wishing her the very best of luck (even though she won’t need it) on her new adventure! They are incredibly lucky to have gained such a fabulous nurse 🐾

As part of our profession, we must keep up to date with new advancements in diagnosis, technology and treatments.
Today, Karen and myself attended a seminar day on dermatology…which just so happened to be held in one of my favourite places…Chester Zoo!!!
Humbling (and exciting!) to be in the presence of so many awesome animal species for a whole day!
…and hopefully some new ideas to bring back to Oakmount to help our patients!

We love little Max, but unfortunately this fluffy boy has been really struggling with his eyes recently 👁️
Max has non-healing corneal ulcers in both his eyes.
This means that some of the layers of the cornea are worn away. These damaged bits are what has stained green colour on the photo 😔

His owners have been great at putting LOTS of different eye drops into each eye a LOT of times each day (much to Max’s disgust!!!)
However, unfortunately Max’s ulcers are triggered by another health problem he has and so they are not getting better.
In fact, they have been getting worse.

This week Karen looked after him under anaesthetic while Sheryl removed some of the unhealthy corneal cells. Then we placed a contact lens on each eye and sutured it in place.
The idea is that Max will still be able to see through the lenses, but the ulcers will be protected and able to heal underneath them 🤞🏻
In 2 weeks, we’ll take the contact lenses out and hope the eye does not still stain green!
Good luck Max!!

Are you looking for a career with animals? Are you hard working, enthusiastic and eager to work alongside a team of committed animal lovers?

We have an amazing opportunity…we are looking to recruit a kennel assistant to start at the beginning of August.
The kennel assistant role is a 40 hour week including some weekend and bank holiday cover as required.
The hours of work are normally 8am-5pm with an hour off for lunch.

There may be the opportunity for the right candidate to complete an apprenticeship at the College of Animal Welfare, for the Veterinary Care Assistant Level 2 Apprenticeship course, via distance learning.

Click the link for further details:
https://www.caw.ac.uk/course/veterinary-care-support-level-2-apprenticeship/

We find this is an excellent introduction into the veterinary profession, allowing you to learn and develop your knowledge and skills whilst working.

We at Oakmount see this role as a ‘stepping stone’ for those who wish to advance and become a student veterinary nurse...to then ultimately qualified and become an RVN!

Whilst there are no entry requirements for the VCS level 2 apprenticeship we do ask that applicant have attained 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 (C) or above including English Language, Mathematics and Science or equivalent qualifications, as these qualifications will be needed to advance as a Student Veterinary Nurse, should a position arise.

Should you wish to apply for the position please send a covering letter and CV to Nicola our head nurse by one of the methods below:

• Email: [email protected]
• Post: Nicola Hardcastle, Oakmount Veterinary Centre, Trafalgar Street, Burnley, BB11 1TP

We promise you, you will not regret it!

The application process is only open for 7 days so please ensure you get your application in on time!

It has been the best feeling to watch Harry adapt to his new enclosure 🥰
To come from the environment he did, the change in him has been amazing to witness!

When he arrived with us, he was subdued and weak. Now he has gained muscle strength, tone and attitude!
Typical of a normal iguana, he is now territorial, anti-social and temperamental in behaviour
(to be fair, he seems quite ungrateful for all the effort we’ve gone to for him!!!🙈).

Whilst now tricky when it comes to his care, it is fab to know that we’ve enabled the transformation to a living sassy dinosaur!!🙈

This is Dora,
Dora presented to the practice lethargic, Inappetent and hadn’t passed any faeces. After careful examination by the vet it was advised that X-rays were taken of Dora’s abdomen.
As you can see from the image Dora had a large object stuck in her small intestines. Surgery was needed to remove this. A small child’s spoon was removed from Dora’s abdomen.
After spending the night hospitalised so that the team could keep an eye on her she went home to recover. We were thrilled to be updated with the progress of Dora 🤍
