Worried about small hedgehogs out in the cold?

This evening we admitted a 333g juvenile hedgehog thanks to Ricky for spotting him in his garden in Kirkcaldy this evening πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»
Being this small they are very unlikely to survive the winter as they haven’t enough fat stored on their little bodies to sustain them. With no natural food around life becomes very hard for them and most young hedgehogs will perish.

We often ask when you call β€œwhat size is the hedgehog?” The easiest way to do this is to compare to the size of fruit. Here is a graphic from the RSPCA which will help you with any hedgehogs you see and an indication of their weights.
We also take into account the body condition of the hedgehog too.
A hedgehog could be an ideal weight but the body condition could tell us otherwise.
Hedgehogs should be nice and round like a football when you look at them from above (looking down) and not be a rugby ball shape which indicates a poorly hedgehog.
Hope this helps.

Remember any hedgehog no matter what size out in the day at this time of year will need help.

Hedgehogs are carnivores and their diet consists mostly of insects and invertebrates πŸ¦”πŸ€“

They dig for earthworms but please DON’T feed them mealworms (or sunflower hearts or peanuts) - these contain high levels of phosphorus which can leach the calcium out of their bones and teeth and lead to Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) where they lose bone density leaving them prone to bone fractures or deformities, appetite loss, lethargy, pain, and if untreated, a slow and painful death.

If you want to support the hedgehogs in your garden by offering additional food, the best thing to give them is cat or dog food, especially cat biscuits which are better for their teeth 😁

Thank you again to David Torrance MSP for the Kirkcaldy Constituency and to the Animal Star Awards for arranging such a wonderful surprise πŸ€©πŸ’•πŸ¦”

πŸ¦”βπŸ¦”βπŸ¦” Lucky me got to stop by Burntisland Hedgehog Haven to present Andy and Sharon with their Animal All Star award!

Andy, Sharon and all their volunteers do fabulous work looking after ill, injured and otherwise unwell hedgehogs brought to their centre from all throughout Fife and beyond.

Hedgehogs have faced a 30% decline over the past decade and are now considered 'near endangered'. Well done to Sharon, Andy and all the volunteers for their hard work in working to address this issue, and congratulations again on your award!

A massive thank you to Co-op members who chose us as their local cause to support through the Co-op Community Fund πŸ€—
We have managed to purchase 3 incubators with the funds which without them we couldn’t have helped as many critical care hedgehogs as we have. We have managed to pay for the remaining cages in the rescue room and purchased more heat mats and a new printer for use in the rescue for leaflet printing to spread more awareness.
By people just taking the time to go onto the Co-op app/website and choosing us it’s allowed us to purchase all of those things for the rescue. Absolutely amazing!! 🀩

We are delighted to be chosen for community funding in this round too and the money raised will be put towards our extension of the rescue which will be a fully insulated shed with electrics, cages and equipment for use in there.
This will allow us the space to move hedgehogs out of the main hospital room quicker (when they have finished treatment) to get them ready for release which in turn will allow us to take more hedgehogs in for the help they so need.
It’s awful having to turn hedgehogs away when you have no space so this will enable us to help more.

It’s only a Β£1 to sign up to become a Co-op member and the more people that choose us as their local cause the bigger portion of the pot of money we will get at the end of the funding period.

You can choose us as your local cause wherever you are in the UK by clicking here

Please remember that any hedgehog out in the day at this time of year (big or small) needs to be secured in a high sided box with a blanket/towel and keep somewhere warm until you can get help from a rescue.
Please don’t keep them yourself to try to treat as they can look ok but can die very suddenly without the right help.

Pleased to say the lovely boy Milo who came to us from Bo’ness with a front leg missing is doing really well. The vet was very pleased with him and was happy with how Milo can walk so he will be with us now until spring and then we will find a lovely secure garden for him πŸ₯°
Thank you so much to vet David Gordon at St Clair Vet Group for seeing Milo yesterday πŸ’•πŸ¦”
