Pain is a common factor in behaviour cases. This is from some cpd I did this year from one of the lectures at the Chronic Pain Symposium:

Some Common pain myths

Its not uncommon that part of what is discussed in a behaviour consultation is "settling" at home. This might be generally or at specific times. This is Bobbie pre consultation - who did really well with a range of advice from a behaviour consultation- see review 3rd June

Medication: People often have strong ideas about using medication for their dogs behaviour problems. For me, in some cases it can be "a key that fits" to help positively affect behaviour. This was the case for Honey who is on Fluoxetine (long term anxiolytic) and twice daily trazadone. Note they are anxiolytic not sedating her.

Castration rarely resolves behaviour problems and can make things worse. This is Ted who fortunately had a suprelorin implant from the vets so the effect of castration might be assessed temporarily. His aggression worsened๐Ÿ˜ http://www.simonvetpower.com/

Fireworks Emergency Advice 2
Again, please share this information. I recommend both Adaptil plug in and Nutracalm for mildly firework fearful dogs. Adaptil is a pheromone product and should be positioned near the den you have built. Nutracalm is a nutraceutical -not all these products are the same in terms of quality or ingredients. With more fearful dogs ASK YOUR VETS for a medicine. My drugs of choice are diazepam/alprazolam. At the right dose they are really effective and importantly they block memory of previous scary noises -Give ideally 30 minutes before but still give if fireworks have started -There is a huge dose range. Your vets are likely to recommend the low end to start but they can be increased a lot for an individual to be effective -You might have to give further half or doses through the night as they might only last 4 hours -They are reducing anxiety and shouldn't sedate - They can have side effects including disinhibition - thus they might behave differently in situations this could include aggression if they were previously worried about people/dogs for instance

Firework Emergency Advice 1
Please share this to anyone with a dog. There are lots of people who don't realise what can be done and usually this fear gets worse with time (This is called sensitisation). More posts to follow.
If your dog is showing any sort of attempt to hide with a fireworks fear build them a den. This might be a cardboard box or a crate or behind the sofa! It doesn't have to be a big space. Feed them through the day there. You might have to be close to start with. If they move it probably isn't well insulated from the sound. Use blankets/duvets over the den to insulate it and make it dark.

Follow up after a behaviour consultation with some practical help. With Freddie here we used the clicker to get him more interested in toys so longer term he can be off lead more on walks.
Other sessions with clients this month were desensitisation sessions; for one dog learning to relax in the presence of another dog and another in the presence of an unknown person

Here is Ink. I am trying to approach him in a threatening way! He shows inhibition, with his ears back, a fear response of processing informatiion. He also shows some avoidance, avoiding eye contact. There is lip licking a displacement behaviour. This is a sign of over-arousal. There are positive emotions, anticipation of attention affecting his arousal and he ultimately stands up and wags for this!
