Sad news in the training world yesterday hearing of the passing of Karen Pryor.
Several years ago when I sat my instructor exams I was asked to write about three people I believe to have made significant changes to the way in which we train dogs.
Karen was an obvious choice for me to be one of the three I chose, with her book 'Don't shoot the dog!' Being used frequently for referencing.
Karen's work & legacy has revolutionised the training industry not only for dogs but all species. Enabling us to communicate clearly & positively without fear or pain.

The only tool/piece of equipment you should ever need to train is that of a clicker. No pain, no fear & no intimidation.

In an unregulated industry that sadly still has unethical, poorly edcated trainers remember this and make sure your trainer promotes the work of this lady & you will be put on a path to success.

Rest in peace Karen Pryor.

If you or anyone you know has and would feel able to provide us with a sweat sample to train our dogs to detect the odour of the disease, we would be very grateful.

As we kick off the next stage of our Parkinson’s dogs project we need participants who are newly diagnosed and have not yet started medication. The process is very simple; we’ll send you a pack with some material to wipe cross your neck and forehead in the morning and you can send it back to us in a pre-paid envelope.

I've been lucky enough to enjoy puppy cuddles whilst supporting this beautiful cocker spaniels family with one to one support.
Addressing puppy biting & encouraging calmness with more desirable behaviours around the three cats who also share the household.

The ability for your dog to disengage from passers by and relax within their environment is something we regularly train here at Sam's Pampered Paws.

As owners we can be guilty of being too occupied teaching our dogs to do something, we can forget to teach them the art of switching off, relaxing and doing nothing.
Many of my puppy class graduates have said it's one of the most valuable training exercises we covered during our puppy training classes as they can now take their dog anywhere with them and know that they will settle ... what a beautiful achievement!

Apologies for the lack of posts recently, I have been quietly planning & training away. I've also had a lovely few weeks being busy carrying out assessments for PAWS Therapy & Assistance Dog Training who I am proud to be a trainer & assessor for.
Thank you again to Waterstones Burton Upon Trent, Cafe B & Burton library for allowing us access during these assessments.

Incredible day on Thursday, spending the day surrounded by fellow canine professionals, listening & learning in awe of Ken ramirez.
Thank you so much to the The IMDT for hosting.

Ken is kind of a big deal when it comes to positive reinforcement training, not just dogs but all manner of species!

Training should always be fun & rewarding for all animals & learning how positive training has been proven to increase life expectancy of those animals should be a huge incentive to everyone to treat positive training as an essential not just an option.
