✨🥳Celebrating World Spay Day!🥳✨
Today is all about raising awareness of the importance of spaying and neutering our furry friends. These simple procedures not only prevent unwanted litters but can also help improve your pet's overall health and well-being.
Let’s give our pets the best start in life - if
you’re curious about spaying or neutering,
we’re here to answer your questions! 🙋♀️
🐶Did you know your dog’s health can be influenced by their weight?
🦠 Overweight dogs have an increased risk of developing diabetes, osteoarthritis, heart disease, and reduced life expectancy. It’s important your dog is exercised regularly and fed a balanced diet.
Your pets health is important to us so we want to reduce these risks. If you need advise, we offer free weight clinic appointments with our knowledgeable nurses tailoring a diet plan to your pets needs, including feeding and exercises advise
Let’s look after our pets and give them a better quality of life ❤️
🎄We would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas from all of us at Eastgate, we hope you have a paw-some day full of festive fun! 🎅🏼
As winter fast approaches, please remember these pet care tips: ❄️
💧 Ensure water is refreshed and your pet is hydrated.
🔥 Ensure they have a cosy bed and a warm space if they need it.
🧊 Watch out for hazards. Antifreeze can be fatal if consumed!
🥰Regularly groom your pet to help maintain their winter coat.
🏃♀️ Stay active! Playtime and training can be very stimulating for your pet too.
Didn’t even touch the sides! Elsa approves of the dog treats and is sniffing around for more! They will be available tomorrow at the Bury branch for a donation to Macmillian. The dog treats contain blueberries, bananas, self raising flour, oats, and, water🫐 🍌
🌾 CHECKING FOR GRASS SEEDS 🌾
Here is a great video showing Sprout the Spaniel being checked for grass seeds, and see how there are a couple hiding in his fluff at the end. It is extremely important to check all our pooches toes at the end of every walk, incase there are pesky seeds hiding away as demonstrated here!
ADDER BITES: Here’s what to do!
🐍 Keep your dog close to you or on a lead around areas known for Adder populations – this will stop them from bothering the snakes and the likelihood of the snakes striking.
🐍 If an Adder has bitten your pet, call your vet immediately, and if possible, carry your pet to stop the venom from spreading.
🐍 Even if you have been on a walk and haven't seen your pet get bitten but they are acting out of character or notice any swellings, call your vet to be safe.
As we go through these warmer months, we will likely see more Adders basking in the sun, where they are likely to be bothered by your pets!
☀️ Just like us, cats need to stay hydrated during the summer months! 💧
Ensure your feline friend has access to clean, fresh water at all times. You can also try offering wet food or adding water to dry kibble to increase their water intake.
Let's keep our cool cats hydrated and healthy this summer!
☀️ Summer days are here, and it's important to keep our furry friends hydrated!
Whether it's a trip to the park or a garden play session, make sure your pup has access to plenty of fresh water to beat the heat.
Remember, a hydrated dog is a happy dog! 🐶
Now that’s service! 🐰
Post-anaesthetic cuddles on one of the nurses laps, whilst being hand fed a delicious snack! Couldn’t get much better eh Rufus? 🤗🥬

N IS FOR NUTRITIONIST
There are a huge range of diets available for our pets, and it can be difficult to know which one is best.
Our nurses provide the hospitalised patients an appropriate diet for their condition, sometimes even needing to administer a liquid feed through a naso-gastric or oesophageal tube.
Your pets diet may not stay the same throughout their life due to a variety of reasons:
🍏 Age - younger animals require more protein to allow them to grow
🍏 Size - A Great Dane will require many more calories than a Chihuahua!
🍏 Lifestyle - pets with higher levels of activity will need more calories
🍏 Breed - Large to giant breeds are more susceptible to musculoskeletal issues, so their diet may need to be supplemented to support the joints
🍏 Medical conditions - Pancreatitis is a condition that requires a low fat diet, a urinary specific diet can help prevent the build up of crystals that could progress into stones in the bladder
🍏 Neuter status - When a pet is neutered their metabolic rate becomes lower, meaning they need less calories. If they were to stay on the same amount of food then there is a risk of extra body fat build-up leading to obesity

M IS FOR MIDWIFERY
Just like humans, animals sometimes require caesarean sections to remove the babies if they are in distress, or if the mother is struggling to pass them.
👶🏼 Once the babies have been removed from the uterus, a nurse will quickly swoop in to take them from the vet performing the surgery, and encourage them to take their first breaths.
👶🏼 This involves wrapping them in a comfy towel and vigorously but gently rubbing their sides to help the fluid come out of the airways, allowing air in for the first time.
👶🏼 They are often supplemented with oxygen
👶🏼 Their umbilical cords are tied off with suture material and will fall off naturally a few days later
👶🏼 Once the mother is recovering from the surgery we will try to latch the babies on for their first feed. The first milk is called colostrum, and is full of antibodies and goodness to help the babies to thrive!
Hearing newborn squeaks for the first time is definitely one of the most rewarding parts of the job! 😻
